When the mutilated remains of a young woman are found in an Appalachian Mountain cave, newly sworn-in deputy sheriff Brynn Callahan is forced to track down a killer driven by twisted motives . . . Not long after donning the uniform of the McCreary County Sheriff’s department in Bone Gap, Tennessee, ex-Marine Brynn Callahan faces her first official homicide. On a cold February morning, a lone … February morning, a lone cross-country skier stumbles across the mutilated body of a young woman. Sent to investigate, Brynn is shocked when she recognizes the victim as a fellow Traveller, Maura Keene.
Maura held a solid standing both within the Travellers’ insular community and among the settled townspeople—a fact that makes her murder all the more disturbing to Brynn, who also straddles the two worlds. After her trained K-9, Wilco, digs up human bones, and then a scrap of paper scrawled with arcane Latin phrases is uncovered, Brynn finds evidence leading her to question those closest to her—and closing the case becomes a deeply personal matter.
While trying to suppress local superstitions and prejudices, Brynn discovers that Maura was keeping a dangerous secret. And as the bones Wilco found are analyzed by forensics, Brynn harbors the troubling suspicion that she knows who they belong to. Still struggling with PTSD, Brynn must put her career on the line and her life at risk to find justice for a woman not unlike herself—haunted by her past, and caught in a vicious cycle she may never escape . . .

Brynn Callahan is an ex-Marine and a newly sworn-in deputy facing her first official homicide along with Wilco, her trained K-9. Brynn and her dog are rather unique characters. Brynn is still suffering from PTSD, using pills and alcohol to help get her through her days. She was injured during her time of service, half her body is covered with burn scars .. but most of her scars are inside. Wilco suffered a hit the same time as Brynn. He lost a leg and his hearing. He’s been trained to sniff out human remains.
Brynn is an Irish Traveler, which are somewhat like gypsies. They pretty much keep to themselves, handle their own problems and definitely do not trust the police. This puts Brynn in a precarious position.
The mutilated body of a young woman is found in a cave. Brynn is shocked when she recognizes who the victim is … a fellow member of the Travelers. Caught between two people .. the Travelers and the ‘settled’ people .. neither of whom trust her to do her job. It doesn’t help when her fellow law officers don’t particularly like her.
Brynn must put her career on the line and her life at risk to find justice for a woman not unlike herself—haunted by her past, and caught in a vicious cycle she may never escape.
The mystery is a good one, pitting people of one side against the other with Brynn caught in the middle. She’s a unique character, and I found myself more engaged by her and her dog rather than the who-dun-it. It seems like she’s fighting everyone coming at her from every direction .. and she’s getting tired of defending herself against them all. If it weren’t for Wilco, she’d feel totally alone.
There are many suspects, several motivations for the murder of a young girl. The Travelers say that someone from the settled people must be responsible, while the settle people are sure that the Travelers did this awful thing. Old secrets will somehow find their way into the light.
Although second in a series, this works quite well as a stand alone. I highly recommend reading SPLINTERED SILENCE, the first book.
Many thanks to the author / Kensington Books / Netgalley for the advanced digital copy of this well-written crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
In this next book of the series Brynn has become a new member of the McCreary County Sheriff’s office and is tasked with investigating a homicide on her first day. You see a skier has come across a young womans mangled body and Brynn is sent in to check out the situation. Brynn is surprised when she recognizes the woman as Maura Keene, a traveller just like herself. Maura was well liked among her people so her murder is quite puzzling to Brynn. Who would have wanted her dead and why? While continuing her search her canine partner Wilco digs up some human bones which has Brynn wondering if this death could be connected with Maura’s. She soon learns that Maura was keeping a dark secret and that it might be the reason she was murdered but finding out who else new is not going to be easy. When clues lead her close to home Brynn worries about just what she will find and if she is emotionally able to deal with the answers. Follow along as Brynn travels along an emotional path to solve Maura’s murder and to deal with the fallout that one hidden secrets leave.
Absolutely, positively, superb, wonderful……. As you can see I loved this book with twists and turns galore. Down to the end I was not sure who the perpetrator was. Must read! Enjoy!
Fractured Truth is the 2nd book in the Bone G as p Travelers series but can easily be read as a stand alone. Bryn is an ex Marine and her retired cadaver sniffing dog, have recently left active service and now work as police detective in the small town she grew up in. Bryn is still suffering from PTSD as a result of an IAD attack that took one of her dogs legs and burned her badly. Main story is about the murder of a young Irish Traveler girl, back story I’d Bryns fight with her PTSD and substance abuse. Was a good book, want to now read rest of series.
Excellent second book in the Bone Gap Travellers series
This book takes up not long after the end of book one SPLINTERED SILENCE. Brynn Callahan and her cadaver dog Wilco were hired by the Investigative Unit of the McCreary County Sheriff’s Department three months ago. They are called out when a girl’s body is discovered in a cave near Bone Gap, Tennessee. It turns out the girl is a Traveller, one of Brynn’s clan of Irish Travellers in the area.
Again, in book two, the Travellers in the area are in conflict with the local “settlers.” Brynn is also fighting old demons – from her time in the Marines and her and Wilco’s discharge because of injuries sustained on the battlefield that affect her private and work lives.
More bodies turn up and Brynn is trying to find answers to multiple puzzling situations meanwhile trying to stay alive.
I’m now off to read book three in the series SHATTERED JUSTICE.
Fractured Truth by Susan Furlong is a gripping, suspenseful and emotional page turner. We are taken to the Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee where a young girl of the Irish Travellers is murdered. Also known as Pavees or Gypsies, they are a close knit group of people that keep to themselves and don’t particularly like police involvement. The sheriff’s department of Bone Gap sends one of their own kind, newly sworn in Deputy Brynn Callahan to investigate.
When I was introduced to Brynn, an ex-Marine suffering from PTSD and her K-9 dog Wilco, I rooted for them throughout the entire story. Brynn’s pain and suffering as a veteran was extremely emotional and added a deep component to the story. Trying to solve the murder of one of the members of her own community, then discovering another murder, and adding more intriguing elements to the plot was what made this book so captivating. What a completely unexpected and compelling ending!
I didn’t read the first book in the series, Splintered Truth, but I don’t think it was needed. I thoroughly enjoyed this book as a stand alone. I would love to read it now though, and also the next book in the series, Shattered Justice to find out what happens next to Brynn!
Thank you to the author for a copy I won in a giveaway! All opinions are my own.
Just finished this one last night. I had received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. In this 2nd book of the series we follow Brynn as her and her fellow cops take on a new case and as she struggles with addiction. There were times in this one that it was “hard” to read what she was going through and I’d have to put the book down for a bit and co to use later. Goes to show how well it’s written of a book can get to you like that! Otherwise it was hard to put down. I read it pretty quickly/at a fast pace just devouring it. I have no clue until it was revealed who the killer(s) was! Which in my opinion is amazing! Lol. I do recommend this series and I’ve already started the 3rd book.
Fractured Truth is a great continuation to the Bone Gap Travellers series.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
The story took you more into the main character’s personal struggles with her PTSD and addiction. It was to the point where you wished you could help her. The suspense and mystery that happens throughout this book is great. Susan kept me guessing who the murderer was until the end.
I can’t wait to read the next book in the series. Thank you Susan for another fabulous book!
Really enjoying this series. I am completely hooked the characters are real to life and the story line is fascinating. Highly recommend. Great job
Although I did not read the first book in this Travellers series, I was able to flow the plot and characters very well. This was a well-written book about a group of people who are mostly ridiculed by the rest of society. The Pavees are known as gypsies, travellers without roots who are not to be trusted. Brynn Callahan is a Pavee, an ex-Marine who is still suffering from PTSD when she joins the sheriff’s office as the newest deputy. She is just in time to work on solving a homicide. I loved how the book flowed from one scene to another and how the characters interacted. My favorite character was Brynn, a flawed character to be sure, but a strong one with a story to tell and a future to survive for. I also liked Sheriff Pusser, a man who stood for values and protecting the town. The ending and the villain were total surprises to me, indicative of how well-written the book was. I definitely plan to look for other books in this series as this one kept me entertained and guessing. Readers of mystery and suspense will enjoy this book!

The second book in the Bone Gap Travellers series is filled with exciting twists and turns. Author, Susan Furlong, has continued to enthrall me in this great new series. Ex-Marine Brynn Callahan and her K-9 Wilco are working for the McCreary County Sheriff’s Office searching for the remains that were found by a cross-country trekker. This is the beginning of a murder investigation that will continue to keep you on your toes. Brynn has more than investigations on her mind, as well. Suffering from PTSD from her years in the Marines, Brynn chooses to cover up the flashbacks and anxiety with a mixture of alcohol and prescription pain pills. Being part of the Irish Travellers community, there are certain lines you do not cross, and it seems Brynn is not the only one crossing them. Will Brynn discover who the killer is before it is too late? Will Brynn’s past come back to haunt her? I cannot wait to see what author Susan Furlong has in store for us next!
The second book by Susan Furlong that I have read, I really enjoyed the first one Splintered Silence and now Fractured Truth carries on the storyline of Brynn and ex marine, who is now working in the sheriff’s department along with her 3 legged dog. I enjoyed this book even more than the first one, as we were able to get a deeper look into Brynn’s life. I would certainly recommend this book to others.
Keeps your interest.
I didn’t read the first in this series and I won’t be reading the rest. This was not a good read. So much in it that made no sense. And, the main character is not at all likable. The dog is the only one in the book that comes off half normal and we all know he is messed up, deaf, missing a leg.
Brinne may have PTSD, but that is only the beginning of her problems. She is into illegal drugs, she’s a drunk and not someone who needs to have access to a gun. I kept thinking she would do something to redeem herself, but she never came close.
Really enjoyed it!
This is the 2nd in this series but the h is a seriously flawed individual who should not have a badge or authority over anyone and needs to be locked up in a rehab facility. I said I wasn’t going to continue but thought maybe the author would have some redemption for this scarred vet. Nope. Won’t be reading anymore of this author.
Fractured Truth is the second book in the Bone Gap Travellers series. I was pulled into this story as soon as I started reading.
Brynn is now working for the Sheriff’s Department in her home town of Bone Gap, a small community in the Appalachian Mountains in Tennessee. She is an ex Marine who along with her dog, Wilco make a great team. Wilco is a cadaver dog…..human remains detection.
When a seventeen year old Traveller is found dead, it brings out two different sides. Brynn will be helping with the investigation to find the truth and justice. Traveller versus outside community.
I live in an area where there are Travellers, and have a real interest in them. They are known for their deceit, and lies, being untrustworthy in my area according to news reports.
An intense, raw, well written story that kept me up late as I did not want to put this book down. This story definitely had me at the edge of my seat. A real emotional roller coaster ride with Brynn.
I can’t wait for the third book!
Fractured Truth by Susan Furlong is the second book in her Bone Gap Travellers series. The main character is Brynn Callahan who the Travellers consider a half breed. Her mother was a Traveller and her father “settled” or non-Traveller. She is also an ex-marine who, along with her cadaver dog Wilco, were injured by an IED. At this point in time she is with the police in McCreary County. Brynn is a main character who I had some trouble getting to like. She has lots of issues and problems with booze and an addiction to pain pills. I can sympathize but at times I would just want to shake her and ask why she didn’t do the hard thing and get herself straightened out. This story has lots of suspense and kept my attention. I enjoyed the storyline and the plot.
I thought book one of Bone Gap Travellers Mystery was amazing…but the Author, Susan Furlong took this second book in the series, Fractured Truth, to a whole new level! This second book follows Brynn Callahan and her dog, Wilco, after they join the McCreary County Sheriff’s force in Bone Gap, Tennessee, solving murders and a mystery involving both “Travellers” and the “Settled” communities. There are secrets, history, and suspicions.
As we learned in book one (Splintered Silence) Brynn is an ex-Marine who was injured by an IED, as was her now-deaf trained military K-9, Wilco. This book centers not only on Brynn’s struggle with PTSD but also with addiction. Fractured Truth is darker than the first, and sooooo well done! I was literally sitting on the edge of my seat at parts of this. I really love the way Ms. Fulong writes the characters, the mystery, the description of the scenery and setting of this book. She does an amazing job helping you to get to know the characters and the parts they play in the storyline! This series gives the reader and understanding of the lives of the Irish Traveller clan. It is certainly a different way of lifestyle!
Although you could read this one without reading Splintered Silence, I would recommend SS first as it gives insight into the civilization and community and their beliefs and behaviors. Susan Furlong knows how to write an excellent murder/mystery and I would highly recommend this very enjoyable series!
Lindas Book Obsession Reviews “Fractured Truth” by Susan Furlong , Author, Kensington Publishing, December 18, 2018
Susan Furlong, Author of “Fractured Truth” the sequel to “Splintered Truth” writes an intense, intriguing , captivating, riveting, and emotional novel. I did read both books, but I think it would be possible to read “Fractured Truth” by itself, but I think you would appreciate it more, if you read “Splintered Truth”. The Genres for this story are Mystery, Thriller, Suspense, and Fiction. The author describes the characters as flawed, complex and complicated. The timeline for the story takes place in the present and goes to the past when it pertains to the characters or events in the stories.
The story takes place in near the Appalachian Mountains in an area called Bone Gap, Tennessee, where the “Irish Travellers, a clan of people with special traditions and believe that ” no one forgets and no one forgives” live. The towns people tend to discriminate and have dysfunctional animosity against the “Irish Travellers” The “Travellers don’t trust the towns people or the police. They handle their problems in their own way.
Brynn Callahan, and her dog Wilco are called in when a young “Traveller ” girl’s body is found. Brynn is suffering from PSTD from the military , and her handicapped dog is trained to locate dead bodies. Brynn also is one of the “Travellers” but now is an outcast as a Police Detective. As more dangerous situations arise, and another body is found, Brynn is finding tremendous difficulty in handling her responsibilities of her job and her family.
Brynn is much more intense, and deeper involved in her problems in this book. Brynn is drinking more, and taking pain pills more, and is justifying that should be allowed. She is “fracturing” the truth to make the pieces fit. Will this cause a problem on her job? Will this cause more animosity from her family? Will Brynn be able to solve this case?
There are twists and turns and unexpected dangers. Brynn is facing more betrayal. I would highly recommend this novel to those readers who enjoy a thrilling, suspenseful mystery.
