AveryHuman beings are nothing but lowly trash. Fit only for consumption. That’s my motto in life and why I avoid everything to do with them beyond an evening meal. Then he shows up with his delicious scent, and I can’t seem to resist hunting him down. But when my hunt gets interrupted by a spray of bullets and I become the prey, I find myself falling into some strange rabbit hole where I have to … I have to rely on this incredible smelling human with strange powers to stay alive. How freakin’ peachy is that?
Ryker
Being left on the doorstep of a church when I was infant meant my life began shrouded in questions. And that’s how it has remained. Question after question. For a human, I have magical powers I don’t understand. After all, magic went extinct a few hundred years ago. I shouldn’t exist the way I do. Spending my life in the shadows has always been the safest place. Then a snarky wildcat of a vampire literally passes out in my lap, and my instincts kick into overdrive. Protect him at all costs. Even if I want to strangle him half the time.
Fractured Truth is the first book in the Consequences of a Sin series which follows Avery and Ryker as they try to find the truth behind a Sin that altered the history of their world. Each book will end with a HFN (or close to it) while the overarching plot continues into the next book. Some cliffhangers are likely.

I loved this first installment in a series featuring vampires and magic and a hell of a lot more. The two main characters are strong and well developed already, the pace is fast, and I like the witty banter. This has got the potential for a great series, and I can’s wait for the next book. This one doesn’t have romance just yet, but there’s definitely the hint that there will be more. If you love fast paced supernaturals, this should be right up your alley.
Brilliant!!! If you asked me what word summarizes my opinion on this book, that word would be brilliant. The story led you to a world in which humans are aware of vampires but not of other supernaturals and witches are extinct. In this world Ryker saved Avery’s life and tried to discover what is happening and why a serial killer is following him. This premise started a great story with twists and surprises in every chapter immersing you in an action-packed plot, full of angsty situations. You felt the connection between the MCs but they are in denial and you kept waiting for them to accept it. Of course, the book finishes in a cliffhanger and as the first one in the series you’ll need to read book 2, to learn what happens next. I can’t wait!!! I received this book as an ARC and this is my honest opinion.
This is a new author to me & I will admit that I enjoyed reading this interesting, slow-burn vampire/human MM romance with a mystery/suspense undertone, it is the first book in the series & offers a splendid introduction to the characters with a tantalizing glimpse of the romantic aspects of the plot.
There is: a human male (Ryker) with strange power, his friend who is a big burly cop (Zane), a snarky & arrogant vampire (Avery) in trouble, witches, hunters, a villainous stalker with evil intentions (Emerret), a old friend (Lucy aka Lucian), twists & turns, intrigue, suspense, humor, magic, adventure, action, danger, threats, murders, attacks, gunfire, some attractions, confusion, verbal conflict, manipulations, memories, abduction, torture, rescued & misgivings. Sadly this book does end in a cliffhanger & I look forward to future books from this author.
This book charmed me. I’ve not read many paranormal books. Most of the ones I have read included vampires and those were well done and set the bar hight. Ashe Winters meets that bar with Avery. Mysterious Ryker piques my curiosity and the relationship between the two slow burns through the whole book and sets the stage for the books to come which I am eager to read. If you enjoy supernatural characters with action and suspense, I recommend Fractured Truth.
*I was given an advance reader copy of this book in exchange for a review.*
Magic + Vampires =
Wow! From the first page, we are thrown right into the action. A chillingly evil villain is hunting one of our MCs, Avery, a vampire. Avery meets Ryker, a human with a magical secret, and is attracted to his scent from the beginning. I admit I’ve always wondered about vampires and scent attraction. It’s an interesting way to decide who you want to be with as opposed to looks or personality. Ryker has his own compelling connection with Avery.
The book takes place from three POVs: Avery’s, Ryker’s and the villian’s. Avery has just the right amount of snark, apathy and arrogance I expect from a vampire but with some unexpected vulnerable moments. Ryker is caring, protective, and will do anything to save Avery. The villain is the right amount of creepy and new characters are introduced that add to the mystery that runs throughout the book. I loved the scene where Avery and Ryker started trusting each other.
I’m hoping that Zane gets his own story at some point too. Even though he’s prickly, he’s loyal to Ryker. An amazing read that I devoured in one sitting. Anxiously awaiting the next one!
This is just the beginning. Beginning of the romance. Beginning of the mystery. I’m really glad that I read the author’s note in start. Please do read it. This almost like a long prelude to the story. I really enjoyed it. I loved Avery. His POV is amazing and a real fun to read. Ryker is also an interesting character. I want to know more about his powers. This is slow burn and in this book there barely any attraction between them. There is a lot of questions and the majority are left unanswered by the end of the book. This is my first time reading Ashe Winters and I’ll be definitely reading more.
A vampire with a superiority complex, a human with a lot of questions. Neither one knew what Fate had in store for them when a dangerous meeting at a club forced them to flee together. Something in the past set them on this course and their unlikely partnership sets them on a path to right those wrongs. Sniping, bickering, running, and protecting; Avery and Ryker aren’t sure if they’re supposed to be enemies or allies and everywhere they turn their steps are followed by something that wants to use them for their own purpose. It becomes clear their enemy will stop at nothing to destroy them…unless they end up killing one another first.
Avery was interesting in that he has a complicated past that he never wants to face. His evasion is “helpful” for the plot to continue beyond this first installment but I find it completely vexing when his withholding of vital information endangers both him and Ryker beyond what would be necessary to continue the story adequately. It’s also frustrating when he seemingly blames Ryker for their situation because of his willful blindness to what’s going on. Adding his constant expressions of hatred and belittling of humans and he’s certainly not endearing himself to me despite being an interesting character. I am, however, looking forward to how he’ll soften, open up, and grow as the series continues.
Ryker, on the other hand, is fortunate in that he found a family who accept him for all he is despite his beginning. Their patience, love, and understanding gave him a foundation to become the tolerant, take-no-guff, compassionate, strong man he is when we meet him. I enjoy him quite a lot and don’t exactly know if I’m on board with the possibility of a romantic relationship between him and Avery just yet. He does draw me into the story far more than anyone else and, if I’m honest, he’s the real draw for me to continue reading the series.
The overall plot is going to some really intriguing places. I’m eager to learn more of the magic, why it really ceased, how it might have continued, and what Ryker’s role is in that. I’m also eager to see his and Avery’s interactions with Ryker’s parents more because they seem to be very stellar human beings that might be able to give Avery the love of family and foundation he needs to feel truly secure with Ryker and ultimately himself. There are a lot of ways this series could go and I think it’s off to a good start.
