**Recommended for 16+ due to profanity, dark themes, and violence. Slow burn romance, kicka** heroine, enemies to lovers tropes. This is not a standalone and ends in a cliffhanger.

“Fractured Past” is an epic dark fantasy that captivates from the front page. With a strong lead character, and a powerfully engaging plot, this book by new author D.E. Chapman is truly a stand out book. Being the first installment in “A Talnarin Novel Series” readers won’t have to wait long for the next installment which is nearly available.
The front cover captures the book “Fractured Past” perfectly. With a title that is the focus of the plot, a beautiful illustration of a tree in autumn leaves with an arch for the journey, to a quote that is both alluring and the main element of the story, the cover really is exceptional. A fantasy that sees a young woman Alana, who after leaving the safety of her village is captured and experimented on. As a result her look is transformed and she is given powers she has no idea how to use. The only clue to what has happened to her coming through in glances of memories of her “Fractured Past”. With the will to survive, get answers on what she has become and seek revenge on the person who has done this to her, Alana is forced into a new way of life. Follow her trials in her new world, as Alana has to fight for life, in a journey fraught with many twist and turns.
“Fractured Past” by D.E. Chapman stands out as a 5-star read in the genre for many reasons listed below:
*Full of description and attention to detail making the lead character become familiar and evoking a shared interest in her pursuit for survival and justice
The portrayal of Alana as vulnerable and fragile makes her character more realistic.
*A plot that is action packed with many twists and turns keeping the story moving forward.
*In an easy to read format that allows a seamless read
*The narrative is original and exceptional with each chapter depicting both Alana moving forward in her journey, but also showing glimpses to her “Fractured Past”.
*The book is long in length allowing readers to be fully immersed over a number of sittings. Also the easy to read format allows a seamless read.
I recommend “Fractured Past” by D.E. Chapman for all lovers of fantasy of a mature age (due to notes from the author about some of the darker elements). I also recommend that this book be read in order, and not as a standalone for readers to fully understand the plot. I can’t wait to read the second installment in this series. Fractured Past (A Talnarin Novel, #1)
This is the 1st book I’ve read written by D.E. Chapman; she has done a great job at writing a good book; I can’t wait to read more of her books.
The story line caught my attention at the very beginning and kept me interested throughout the entire book.

D.E. Chapman has created a new twist to the captured by aliens genre. In the beginning of this tale, it appears that you are just being treated to another captured by aliens story. You realize it is well written, with exacting detail of the presumed responses of long-term torture, and you are waiting for the space ship to take her away or return her to earth. THIS IS NOT HAPPENING! The author has created a new world with which humanity interacts with several intelligent species with the expected problems of differences do not often mix well. The story develops Alanna slowly from a very messed up person into a person still with severe flaws but on a mission of developing her strengths and new found powers and delivering vengeance upon the person who so thoroughly tortured her. This is a book and hopefully a series that you want to read.
I read this book in two sittings. A tad confusing at first, I soon got the hang of it. The main character, Allanna’s emotions and experiences are expressed in detail. I look forward to reading the second book of the Talnarin Novel Series. Looking forward to the developments to come on Malik, a beautiful hunk of a man. Will they fall in love, just be friends, or their relationship deteriorate?

Alanna just wants an adventure, away from the mundane village life. She believes all the tales and warnings about staying within the boundaries are just that, warnings to keep people from leaving. However, once she takes the steps to try and prove those warnings wrong, she realized too late the mistakes she makes.
The first third of the book was a little confusing for me since there are a lot of flash backs. I mean, I know they were as the author made sure to differentiate between past and current, but it took me a little bit to figure things out. It’s not a big deal and it actually explains the mental condition our heroine finds herself in or is experiencing. Things really picked up after that and we get to meet some of the talnarins. However, there’s still a lot of mystery about talnarins, who they are and why things are the way they are. I hope that the next book will delve more into that. Overall, good start to this series.
Alanna finds her very life and capabilities changed. She truly cannot go home again to a simple life in the village she came from.
Surviving with her new powers not contained or properly trained is another challenge- perhaps a lethal one.
A danger to herself and others, what lies ahead for the woman who is no longer a simple village girl?
Intense action and dark romance

What have you done to…
This book is different from my usual choice. There is a lot of information to absorb in one sitting. It is a well written book with lots of characters. I would recommend this book to most people. D.E Chapman writes a great book.
This book started off a bit confusing to read for me at first. But once I got into the book it made total sense why it was written that way. As the story developed I just got more and more invested in Alanna’s story. Then before I knew it the book was over and I wasn’t even close to ready!
I love how the story develops and just gets more and more interesting the farther you get in the book and I can’t wait to see what happens next!
This does contain a cliffhanger but I wouldn’t let that stop you from picking up this book. It is totally worth the read!
I Received ARC from BookSprout for Honest Review.
I Give this Book a 3/5 Star Rating.
Cliffhanger(?): Yes.
Drama: 3.5-4/5
Suspense: 3.5/5
Dark(?): To Me? No. But other readers will perceive this as dark.
The hardest part of the book for me to get into was the first half of the book, your having to read Alanna’s current and past POV, pretty much immediately and at the same time the world is being described to you and it was hard to understand and absorb at first. It shouldn’t have been so immediate, cause I almost couldn’t decipher from past and present. I think I would’ve liked the past to be the very first thing to read to get the overall tone and flow of the book.
The book overall just didn’t really click with me, I might read the next book, but I’m not honestly sure.

Fractured Past is the first book in the Talnarin Series. Alanna is living in a world of five species. An experiment curses her in becoming one of the Talnarins. Each eye color has a different. Alenna is different all together which makes her totally different. The story does begin with a back story and her world. Does end in a cliffhanger!! Must Read!!!
To be honest, I don’t read much Paranormal, so I’m still a little confused about what is happening. I’m definitely going to read the next book. I need to know where Alanna’s story is going to go. The story was well-written and very creative. The glossary in the back of the book helped me figure out the terms and that made it easier. If you like Paranormal, I hope you give this book a chance.
WOW! Fractured Past is D.E. Chapman’s debut novel and She threw me into a World of the UNKNOWN for me! It takes you on a journey of a girl named Alanna and trying to find out what happened to her but also find who is responsible for her change.
Captured and Tortured, her abductors use her as guinea pig of sorts which are painful. But during the process, was changed inside and out. She has not clue on why they are doing this and wants to know where her family as gone. She is learning to survive in a world where she learns New things but CANNOT trust anyone.
This is a Definitely Must Read Book with its Dark Fantasy, Entertaining mysteries and Suspenseful thriller. Well written with full of action and a Cliffhanger that will Leave you hanging.
Alanna is from a human village and one night she explores outside of her village, gets captured and is experimented on. A transformation takes place and she gains powers that she is not equpped to use, lacks the knowledge to use them. She has flashbacks which equips her eventually with what she needs to do. The flashbacks are confusing, to say the least, but as you read the book, the transformed Alanna learns how to deal with life. Twisted with a good plot, I recommend the book for you to read. Alanna moves forward in the book, the plot is out of this world, which I like, very imaginitive, and the character makes the reader feel her pain and changes through emotions. A must read.
Her very own existance a threat Alanna finds herself in an unknown world. She has been kidnapped and experimented on and now has powers she does not know how to control. Alanna sets out to find the people responsible and get pay back.
I must admit it was hard to get through the first few chapters but after that the book was smooth sailing.
I would love to read the next instalment of this book and would recommend it to new readers looking for a new author.
This book is book 1 in the Talnarin series. Alana is our main character in this story. She is a human that wants a little freedom so one night she leaves the comfort of her house and goes oast her boundaries. She gets captured and has become an experiment. They give her tons of different drugs and it changes her. She finally gets out and she goes back to her village. She doesn’t realize she was being followed and she gets her whole family captured. This story take us on her journey. Its has it moments of darkness. This story pulls at your heart. You just hate to see her go through so much stuff.
3 1/2 Stars
This is my first time reading this author’s books. I enjoyed the book but at times I was a little confused. In the beginning the story jumped around a little, but near the middle it started making sense. I really started to get more into the book and I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series!
This book really surprised me. I wasn’t sure I was going to like it when I started but I ended up loving it. I say that because at the beginning I got a little confused with the flash backs but I quickly got over that. The story was well written and it was easy for me to imagine the world the author created.
I really ended up liking Alanna. My heart broke for the young woman that had been through so much. She was abducted, tortured and experimented on. Alanna saw and experienced things no child or person should ever have to. It broke her but she never stopped fighting. Finally she manages to escape but finds herself alone. No longer able to return to the life she once knew the only thing that keeps her going is the need for revenge. Only she realizes that she might not be able to accomplish it on her own. This realization leads to making unlikely allies with individuals from the same species she aims to destroy.
I admired Alanna’s strength and courage. It’s no easy thing to face the terrors that haunt her day and night. Her story ends with a cliffhanger but it’s totally worth reading. I can’t wait to start the next book.
(4.5)
This is a dark YA/Dystopia book that end is a cliff hanger. That being said this book is really good and with capture your interest. Alanna is a human that finds herself captured and experimented on in such a way that leaves her forever changed and wary of trusting. This is the story of her struggle to survive, recover and extract her revenge but she must first learn how to manage her new skills. A dark, intensely written fantasy. Can’t wait to finish this series
