Can one summer together make up for eight years of separation?
Commander Brett Murphy left his family’s construction firm in Oklahoma City for a life of hard work at Three Rivers Ranch. Alone, without a wife and kids, Brett needs the camaraderie he enjoyed while serving overseas with his Army buddies, Squire Ackerman and Peter Marshall.
What Brett doesn’t need is the reappearance of his … reappearance of his ex-wife. Fiery Kate Donnely has come to Three Rivers to confess to Brett that they’re still married, and oh, he has a seven-year-old son she never told him about. At least not in letters she mailed.
Eight years ago, Kate left Oklahoma City only weeks after Brett’s first deployment, shamed because of her bad choices and the unborn child of a man she’d already asked for a divorce. She needs him to sign the papers now or she can’t have access to her hefty inheritance. But Brett absolutely does not want Kate to take his son away from him again.
They strike a deal: She’ll stay at Three Rivers for the summer so Brett can have the opportunity to get to know his son. How far will they have to go and how much will they have to forgive in order to become a family?

I have not finished this book yet. But have read both 1 & 2 in series this is book 3, will continue with the series. I just gives HOPE. It is about couples that have had a difficult path and had given up hope on finding anyone and how they come together. In this 3rd book the couple is already married but he got shipped off overseas shortly after the wedding. Neither knows how to get to the other till almost 8 years later. Can’t wait to see how they get back together for good.
My favorite in the series!!!
Bret and Kate married quickly then Brett shipped out, Kate go lonely, but didn’t cheat but so many misunderstandings on both sides. Kate asks for a divorce through email and Bret replies through email -whatever you want. Neither wanted a divorce ugh – angst of course. Kate shows up at the ranch with a 7 year old surprise. I love how they communicated through the years, Kate by letters she never mailed and Brett through emails he never sent. I really loved this couple and they love each other still. So glad the angst was cleared up quickly but not without some trouble. I highly recommend this book and the rest of the series but especially this book. I loved this book so much I listened to it on audio. Great narrator.
Wowie. This was the Hail Mary of second chance romances! It was incredible and deep and had a lot to do with forgiving both others and yourself. There was army mixed in and parenting. I have an almost 4 year old son and it was fun to see what he’ll be like in just a short few years. Pretty unbelievable. I really like the letters aspect – reading over what they wanted to say to each other over the years.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Story: 5 stars
*spoiler alert*
I was gifted this audiobook, this review is my honest opinion.
Brett and Kate are in a complex situation because of Kate’s lies. I’m not a fan of books where there is lying, but since Kate is now trying to come clean and I didn’t need to live through her years of lying, I’m ok with the book. Kate’s lies have gone on for 8 years, and now she has to woman-up and face them. Brett learns he has a 7-year-old son that he never knew of and thought he was divorced from Kate. He is pretty shocked and angry when Kate shows up with Reid, their son.
The thing I loved about this book were the letters each of them wrote to the other without sending them. His on email, hers on paper. The letters softened what might have felt like a rough book. The letters tell us readers that these two have been constant to one another and still love one another and give us hope that they’ll work things out.
Narration: 4 stars
Ms. Doughty does a very good job with southern accents, although in this book, Reid is ‘starting to talk like a cowboy’ and I couldn’t tell the difference between her southern accent and her cowboy accent. This might be because I’m from the western US and the subtle differences are lost on my ears. Either way, it’s a lovely accent and really nice to listen to. She reads at a good pace, her men’s voices sound like men and she has good expression. I’d gladly listen to her narrate again!
*poor, **ok, ***good, ****very good, *****something special
If you’re looking for Christian romance, you’ll love this story. Kate and Brett struggle with past secrets and forgiveness and learn to see past emotional hurt to learn God’s best plan for their lives.
A fantastic read that really grabbed me from start to finish. The Audio is fantastic the Author and the Narrator has done a fantastic job bringing the story to fruition. I love the World building as well as the Characters. I could picture the scenes in my mind’s eye as I listened. I definitely recommend.

Really enjoyed this emotional story.
Renewal
Brett left Oklahoma City to work with Pete at the ranch, and build Pete’s house. While there the woman he loved showed up. Kate came to introduce Reid to his father. Brett was surprised but angry. Can they work everything out.
I really enjoy the second chance romances from Liz Isaacson. Especially moving are those stories that includes experiences from veterans.
I was touched by how well she described the survivor’s guilt of those with lesser bodily injuries. Also very moved by her portrayal of the families left behind, and how they coped- or didn’t.
Being the family of a vet is a lifelong experience. The good, the bad, the ugly.
This story gives hope not only for Love, but for the forgiveness we need to move on and move forward with our lives.
Whether we’re the spouse left behind, or the warrior who ordered someone to take the shot, at himself, to save others.
Well painted the fear and anger for the family left behind.
It’s a chance for forgiveness and new beginnings, as individuals, and as a family.
If you enjoy hope in harsh circumstances, hope you enjoy this book, and this series too.
Loved this series!!!
I love Liz Isaacson, her novels are truly wonderful! It is hard to find an author who can distinguish between a Christian Romance Novel and a Contemporary Romance Novel, but Ms. Isaacson does it and she does it well! I highly recommend every novel that I have read, and I hope that every novel I plan to read in the future is of the same quality!
“Fourth and Long” is a beautiful story about second chances, even when they aren’t the easiest thing to come by. Brett and Kate where married for only a short time before he was shipped out for a tour in Iraq, but what he didn’t know was that even though Kate had asked for a divorce two months into his tour- it was never finalized. Kate found out she was pregnant and now she is back, multiple years later, to finally tell Brett the truth. Is it too late?
I recommend this ten novel series, each one is better than the last. Very well written, it’s like a story coming off the pages before your very eyes.
