Four Stars
I’m not going to lie I thought this book was going to be about some old guy getting with a young girl. At first you feel happy for Firelight because she grew up with a better understanding of life and being an adult than most people. But then the real world comes crashing in and she gets a rude awakening. I lijed that she didn’t let it hurt her instead she used it to better herself. She is a very strong character. Sky was a little creepy to me but you kind of see him has this bear that’s like a grandpa. If that makes sense. Understanding what a different name for a kid. I did like him. He gave me tingly feelings like Jason Mamoa. Overall a great read and a different view on this lifestyle.

5 stars!!!!!
I as really surprised by this book. I really enjoy when you start a book an then it has twists in it that you didn’t expect. This book was definitely one of those books. I was very much glued to the pages and didn’t want to put the book down.
I definitely had a ton of emotions reading this book. I was so happy for Firelight aka Neomi and Royce and then the twist. I felt my entire heart break and could really feel what she was feeling. I was really caught of guard when Understanding came into the picture but was very happy for Firelight and Understanding. I found this book to really intrigue me and I am certain I will be reading more from this author in future.
Ok seriously, I bawled a few times in this story. At one point I put the book in time out because I couldn’t handle it. I’ve read a couple of this author’s books and they were good but this was leaps and bounds more. So fantastic. So heart-wrenching. Such a beautiful story.
This is definitely one of those stories about things in life being fated. More than the love story, Firelight’s life story was inspirational and interesting. The men in her life are all deserving to be there, they are real and thoughtful and just good people. There was no villain, no bad guy, no suspense. Found in Understanding was not what I expected, it was a lovely surprise.
Found in Understanding: Refuge Series Book Three
By Debbie Zello
Found in Understanding is another awesome instalment to the Refuge Series by Debbie Zello. I have to say I have loved this series and I am pretty sure you will to. Although this is book three you can be assured that it can be read as a standalone so it wont matter which order this series is read in. Neomi is given the name Firelight when as a child her when her family move into a commune. Due to her great education she is now at university. There she meets Royce who becomes the centre of her world. This series is so good I can’t make up my find which of the books is my favourite. This book has a mixture of romance, devastating in some parts, heart breaking and yet in other parts will a have you feeling that the book is also somewhat beautiful. You will fall in love with the characters in this book. So, what are you waiting for get a coffee, put your feet up and enjoy the read.

Stars-5
I absolutely love the twist that the author wrote even though I would love this story without it. This story put me through so much emotions! I love that this story really started when Neomi was three. I feel that I got to really understand and connect with her since the story grew with her. She is unbelievable smart, understanding, and sweet. She seems to attract those around her. She brings out the best in those she loves. I love reading the connections she made, because she was a well done character. Neomi was definitely my favorite part of this story! I have read a couple of stories by Debbie Zello, and I have not yet been disappointed!
Found in Understanding By: Debbie Zello is the third book in the refuge series, much like the first two I was hooked from the beginning. The story line is great and the characters leave you wanting more and more. I found myself wanting to be friends with the characters and part of their lives. I was truly sad when this book was over, and I have a hard time moving on when this happens. Can’t wait to see what else this author has, as this author is a newer author for me and I really enjoy the writing style and her character development. I will definitely continue to read her books. I give this book a solid 5 stars.
Found in Understanding:Refuge series book three by Debbie Zello, this book looks into the ups and down of a young girl who has been sheltered all her life in a commune to then go into the real world to University.
Firelight moved to the commune when she was young and has always been home schooled, but she is moving on and wanting to learn more in a High School, but she discovers not everyone is nice and she come across so kids who are nasty to her. But she overcomes this and exceeds in school and get to go to University, while is university she meet Royce. While see is at university she has a accident which she has to fight back from but this is a great learning curve.
I loved this book and the interactions between all the characters in this book, Firelight is a smart young woman and she is a brave woman, I loved this character and had a real infinite with her. This is not the first book I have read by this author and this will not be the last book either.
Found in Understanding: Refuge Series Book Three by Debbie Zello had me in tears. Not just tears, heart wrenching ugly sobbing tears, I thought is she mad. Why would you do that, but has I read further it all became clear, even though I am still thoroughly devastated. I enjoyed the story which was very emotional as we watched a young child grow into herself, life, love and loss. But I also found myself laughing out loud. The story kept me engaged and I loved the main characters and I think this has to be my favourite book by Debbie. She always writes stories that evoke strong emotions and you know it is a good book when that happens.
This is absolutely one story that should not me missed. Beware you will need a box of tissues to make it through.
I have read a couple of books from this author but this story blew me away. I love new adult romance but this author put a little twist on this story. This is the third book in the Refuge series. I could not put this book down once I started reading it. These characters drew me in and kept up all night long. It only took me a few hours to devour this amazing love story.
Firelight is just a young girl when her family moves into a commune. She loves her name that Sky gives her. Firelight grows up homeschooled until she is old enough to go to a regular school. She is nervous on her first day with good reason. Firelight finds out that kids can be cruel and also her real name is Neomi. She is a very smart girl and she exceeds in school really quickly. Neomi aka Firelight graduates with honors and heads off to college. She ends up going to a major university. This is where she meets the beautiful Royce. She learns a lot in college but an accident shatters her future. Neomi is a fighter and she gets her life back on track. She meets Understanding and her world is perfect again or is it? Will Firelight find her future or will her past come back to her?
I absolutely loved this book. The storyline has it all romance, heartbreak, and healing. You will fall in love with these characters right from the beginning. Neomi is a very smart and beautiful woman. She learns that life can be rough at times but you will heal with time. Understanding looks rough but he is a beautiful man. He is so kind and loving. The way he treats Firelight will make your heart melt. This talented author will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end. The ending left me in tears of joy. I can’t wait to see what this author will write next.
Found in Understanding by Debbie Zello is book three in the Refuge Series. I have to admit, there were parts of this book that I just could not get into. But overall it was definitely a unique and innocent story. Firelight has known nothing but love her whole life. She grew up with a different upbringing and was not exposed to negativity until she was forced to attend regular school. From there she became an intelligent and gifted student. Upon her acceptance into Yale, she makes it though navigating her new life with help from her friends. The love and loss she experiences felt so real and genuine. Times she felt heartbroken and useless and times she was on a euphoric high. She grows up and finds herself experiencing many new things and emotions. I look forward to reading more by this author as I liked the uniqueness.
Found in Understanding by Debbie Zello a four-star read you need to find. This is the third book in the Refuge series, it can be read as stand-alone, but I would say read the series as they do build the authors writing style and you will get more out of it. I will be honest, I enjoyed the book, but it wasn’t as good as some of the others by this author. I will admit though, I think it was me as this was such an emotional read and I wasn’t in the place for it. I am sure I will re-read this story and find it so much better. It was very heavy in the back story and then glossed over some of the more current details that I felt we could have been dealt with in more details, that being said I loved the first couple of chapters where we got the initial story of Firelight, where she got her beautiful name and how. So that’s why I think you should give this book a go, I know I will be re-reading once I get over my funk.
It’s always comforting to loose myself within a book that can work it’s magic with me. I loved getting lost in Found in Understanding by Debbie Zello. I was completely impressed with her writing style and her ability to create a world that is so beautiful, yet painful. Because you see, the beauty that Firelight gets, is also taken away. So she has to fight for what is right. And that is where the beauty lays – when the journey is painful but the final path where you are led to is what’s amazing.
I loved everything about this book. From the characters, to the storyline. I was impressed and can’t wait to hear more about this author and see what else she can offer her readers. This was definitely a 4 Star Book for me!
Found in Understanding has to be my favorite book by Debbie Zello that I have read yet. I loved every single second of my time spent with Neomi Firelight. I finished this book a few nights ago, and I have been searching for the right words to review this with as much credit as I could to Zello for such a beautiful and heart wrenching story. I am not sure there is much more that I can say, other than you really have to pick this book up and clear a chunk of time to read it all in, because I can also guarantee that you won’t want to put it down till you have finished it! Oh, and make sure you have a box of Kleenex available too, because this is a mega tear jerker.
This is the third book in The Refuge Series, but I don’t think it is necessary to read the other two before this one. I just recommend it because they are also great books. This story focuses on Firelight, interesting name for a character was my first thought. After I finished the book it made perfect sense! Firelight has been living under a rock for most of her life, or so it seems. She grew up on a commune in California. After a lot of hard work and focus she finds herself at Yale University. She is studying English and slowly working on finding her place in the mainstream world. When one of her professors becomes the center of her world it would appear we have a fairytale love story. Until Debbie Zello changes that with the stroke of a pen and rips your heart out. Like gut wrenching, curled up in a ball, crying and yelling at my kindle, ripped out my heart.
And that is all I will say about that. You will have to read this to find out what happens. I can promise you that the journey will be equally brutal and beautiful. Zello will slowly put the pieces of your heart back together in a poetic way. You will not be disappointed you picked up this beautiful and different love story. Find out if Firelight will have her happily ever after or not today.
Found in Understanding: Refuge Series Book Three by Debbie Zello was a okay, feels invoking read that really got you in the heart.
Not my first read by this author or this series, I have read the other two books, but they are stand-a-lones so don’t worry about reading them in order. I very much enjoyed the first two books in this Refuge series. But to be honest, as far as for how this book stacks up to the others, I feel, for me, this one fell a little short at keeping my attention and eyes glued to the pages.
Lets get this out of the way so I can tell you about the goods things going on in this book. I loved the opening, as in the first two chapters. I loved how it opened with Firelight, her little three year old self, meeting the important Sky and what it was like growing, learning and cohabiting with others like their family that were down on their luck. But, and heres the but, it went on too long for my liking. Background is all and good, and but, there was just too much of it. I felt after the first two chapter I felt like I was reading a diary until Firelight got into college. I also, for me, fell like it took away what we could learn about Firelight as a adult, because of when know about her(everything), there was no mystery to her character, and for me, left very little room for her to grow. It also made, most of her interaction with her peers feel hollow and unfinished, because there was no initial get to know you, or bonding, you could say.
I know that seems like a lot, but in truth, this story is much more then Firelights past. We get to meet two very important people, that will change her, and open up her heart. As a overall character, Firelight was strong, smart, determined, and when she was down, she picked herself back up and did something about her situation. Weather it was for being different or grieving a loved one. I just feel that if some of her back story was left out, and she got to tell it as a adult, to Understanding, the it would have gave her depth, and would had added a extra layer to her already solid character build.
The story itself was good, very emotional, and heart string pulling. Understanding, stole the show. He had major growth and the love he had for Firelight was heart warming and special. They fit, and I fell completely under their spell. Their story together, is what pulled this read, for me, into its own. There was no traumatic brake up that one of them had to fix, there was no random stupidness that kept them apart. Okay there was a pretty weird ending, but it wasn’t earth shattering. Cause Firelight knew her heart, and that made me all melty on the inside. I like it when there’s no drama, just for having drama.
Overall, though I wasn’t as into this book as the others, this isn’t me saying this is a bad book. It’s by far not, I just has some issues with information, and a little too much backstory. Once I was really into the main story, I loved it, and can’t express enough how good this story is. This is a super high recommendation from me, and like anything reading is subjective, so you might not even be bother with the opening. Give this story a read, and you will understand why I fell so hard for Firelight and Understanding.
Happy Reading

Found In Understanding by Debbie Zello is the 3rd book in the fantastic Refuge series. Each book is a stand-alone but I’d definitely recommend reading all the books as this is a really great series of books.
This book tells the story of Neomi Dillon (Firelight) from the age of 3 right up until adulthood. Neomi grew up on a commune style ranch and therefore lived a very sheltered childhood. Initially on entering high school she is treated badly due to her upbringing but she excels and ends up at Yale on a full scholarship. At Yale she falls in love with her professor’s teaching assistant Royce. When Royce is tragically killed in an accident Neomi is devastated. A few years later Neomi then meets and falls in love with Understanding.
This is an amazing story of a young woman who is learning about love. Neomi is an intriguing character and I loved her story. I have to admit to shedding many tears when reading this book. Please have a supply of tissues handy if you choose to read this.
Just when you think everything is going well for Neomi, you are thrown a twist at the end that you will never see coming!
I continue to find myself impressed with the books I am able to read from this author. And this book definitely continues that tradition. I was immediately drawn in to the story with the first page and couldn’t pull away until the book was finished. I loved it and simply cannot wait to go back and read it again.

5 out of 5 stars
The story Found in Understanding: Refuge Series Book Three by Debbie Zello is a new adult romance book. It is a story that once I started I didn’t want to put down until I had read the final page. It is the story and journey of a girl named Firelight. Her story is one that is about the experiences that she has. It is a book that had my emotions going up and down. There were many heartwarming times and others when I had tears in my eyes. I loved reading about Firelight. She is a young woman who grew up in a farming community where she always felt the love from those around her. The farm was her refuge. She is a beautiful, gifted, and intelligent young woman. She was blessed with a full scholarship and a time in her life where she is discovering the world beyond the farm where she was raised. Follow her story as she discovers first love and her determination to succeed in all she does. This is the third story in the Refuge series and I loved it just as much as the first two. It is a well-written book that will tug at your heartstrings. This story also includes other characters that you are introduced to. I enjoyed reading about them and their interactions with Firelight. This is a book and series that I highly recommend reading.
Found in Understanding- Debbie Zello
5-star review
Found in Understanding by Debbie Zello is by far my favorite book of hers. It’s the third book in the Refuge series, a series of standalones. They definitely do not need to be read in order, but I would suggest reading all three as each book is well worth a read. Debbie’s writing always pulls me right in with all of the detail, relatable characters, interesting and intriguing storylines and all of the emotions. I always end up shedding a tear or two while reading Debbie’s work.
Firelight’s story is completely unconventional and unlike anything I’ve ever read, which made her story extra special. It’s a story about self-discovery, pursing dreams, love, loss and new relationships. This storyline had me hooked from the start. I experienced so many emotions while reading Firelight’s journey, from awe, surprise, love, heartache and sadness, it sure was a roller coaster ride of emotions.
This memorable romance is one I would definitely recommend, I look forward to reading more of Debbie’s work in the future!
Firelight remembers arriving in the commune and meeting Sky and getting her new name. Firelight is home schooled until she is old enough to go regular school, although she doesn’t want to go Sky convinces her that she may want to go to college one day and needs to go.
Having been at the commune and then after going to school on the first day she learns that some can be cruel and that her real name wasn’t Firelight. Working through the struggle of dealing with that Firelight grows and wants to make the best of her life with Sky’s encouragement.
Heading to college and using Neomi inside of Firelight, she realises that there was a lot that she didn’t learn on the farm about life, but her friends help her through.
While Neomi does well at college she also learns about love and loss that she has never been exposed to before and leaves her devastated, and slowly she learns to move forward with her life.
Neomi meets Understanding and feels that she can move on with her life, with him supporting her dreams.
Loved the story and how you watched Neomi develop as a person and her hopes and dreams that Sky had for her came true. Loved the twists and heartache throughout the story can’t wait to read more from this author.
Firelight’s story is an emotional rollercoaster. I had trouble putting it down, it was so riveting. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and highly recommend this book.
