As an author and prolific reader, I don’t often take the time to leave reviews. But I always do for exceptional books. This book is one of them. The author must have completed extensive research because her realism and detailed descriptions were outstanding.and made me feel as though I were watching a movie instead of reading a book. I could see and feel everything she described–from the spectacular scenery and caves to the depths of dark, dangerous mines; from extreme poverty to the wealth of the privileged; and from heartbreak and despair to love and happiness. Jennifer Scoullar is an author of rare talent and a fabulous storyteller!
Great book, I loved both books 1 and 2. Characters outstanding
This is a wonderful book full of truths about life, the world we live in and how we care for it. The fortunes and interactions of 3 families during the years spanning the turn of the 20th century will make you appreciate all of them for their strengths and weaknesses. A very impressive story of a place few fiction books are written about.
This was a Great book!!! Kept one’s interest from the first pages…I loved it!!!
Tragic, romantic, and educational. It was a learning experience for me as far as Australia and South Africa were concerned. I enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good adventure.
I upped this review to a four. I downloaded the book thinking it was an action/adventure story. There is some of that, but to a great deal this is a romance. Yet, I still was hooked and had to finish it.
This a marvelous book! The plot is rich and complex. The characters are very real people, capable of doing good and bad things, being strong and weak sometimes, so we can feel them very alive. And most of all, the nature is treated with so much love, knowledge and compassion that it’s a very important part of the story. I’ve really loved reading it and I highly recommend it. Congratulations to the author for your outstanding work!
First time in a long time that I didn’t guess the ending before page 30. It was different from other mysteries; not only the setting but the story line. Love to read more like this.

Excellent story and setting.
Very enjoyable read.
My kind of book all around
Scoullar’s love of Tasmania and it’s wild bush country pours out in her writing. Her characters are extremely well developed, and her research into Tasmania’s past is exceedingly thorough. This is the first of the Tasmanian Tales series, and each book stands on its own quite well.
The one thing I didn’t like is her formula, or rather, how easy it is to spot her formula. Star crossed lovers, rich versus poor, bush versus civilization. You get a happy ending, but only after characters are put through hell.
I read the first to books out of order, with less than a month between. I’m thinking I need more time between books.
I really enjoyed this book. The story was well written. The characters believable. A love story written tastefully.
Beautiful writing.
Having recently been to Tasmania, this book brought history to light and the terrible conditions, extraordinary suffering and desperate times. It’s amazing the Tasmanian’s and Australian’s are still so welcoming of the English after what was done to them!
This was a challenging and very interesting book. I feel I learned a lot about the rough living in the country at this time and was reminded how devastating the class differences of the era could be for innocent people.
Excellent read! The title makes it sound all love and roses, but there were plenty of thorns for him to get around! The characters were well-developed and seemed so real and accountable. Hard to put down!
It is an easy read. It is very interesting for the story is set in Tasmania and Africa
If I could I would have given it a 3 1/2, but not quite a four.
This story takes place in Tasmania with detailed descriptions of the land, animals, and foliage. The lead characters were strong and realistic. I especially liked the thrust of conservation throughout the book. I recommend reading it!
