Devi Morris isn’t your average mercenary. She has plans. Big ones. And a ton of ambition. It’s a combination that’s going to get her killed one day – but not just yet. That is, until she just gets a job on a tiny trade ship with a nasty reputation for surprises. The Glorious Fool isn’t misnamed: it likes to get into trouble, so much so that one year of security work under its captain is equal to … equal to five years everywhere else. With odds like that, Devi knows she’s found the perfect way to get the jump on the next part of her Plan. But the Fool doesn’t give up its secrets without a fight, and one year on this ship might be more than even Devi can handle.
If Sigouney Weaver in Alien met Starbuck in Battlestar Galactica, you’d get Deviana Morris — a hot new mercenary earning her stripes to join an elite fighting force. Until one alien bite throws her whole future into jeopardy.more
This space opera trilogy kept me ripping through the pages from start to finish. I read all three books over a long weekend.
I enjoyed Fortune’s Pawn, although it is certainly the first in a series given the ending. Devi is a likeable character with a fun attitude toward life and a sweet modern approach to romance. The plot has some unexpected twists, but Devi never betrays herself or the reader. Neither the violence nor the sex got too graphic for me and both are used …
In my opinion, space opera is the urban fantasy of the sci-fi world. And this is a great space opera for those who like adventure and romance in nearly equal measure. A fast, fun read!
Have you ever come across a book that was EXACTLY the type of book you’ve been searching for years and years to read? That’s this book for me. I wanted to clutch it to my chest and shout “Mine! Mine! Mine!” I loved it so much. Of course, then reality hit me, and instead of wanting to clutch it to my chest, I wanted to run around shoving it into …
I normally picture the books I’m reading in my head, but this was like a full-blown movie. I attribute that mostly to Ms. Bach’s world building, but I have watched a lot of Sci-Fi shows with bad-ass women-BSG, Killjoys, Dark Matter, Firefly, etc. The characters were fantastic and I’m invested in these characters and their story so hard.
Really …
I just finished reading all three of the Paradox stories by Rachel Bach, the pen name for SFR stories by author Rachel Aaron. This is something I’ve long planned to do, as I’ve read – and totally adored – all of her fantasy stories (which I cannot recommend highly enough). I held off a bit as the price per book was way past my normal budget line …
One of my pals recommended Fortune’s Pawn by Rachel Bach by describing it as, and I quote, “WTF science fiction.” She was then able to point to the precise (early) chapter where the WTFery begins, and that was all it took to sell me on this book.
In Fortune’s Pawn, Devi Morris is the best mercenary in the Blackbirds, but she wants to be more. Her …
LOOOVE it!!! Action, violence and a snarky, butt-kicking (female) marine in powered armour. Seriously, what more could a girl want?
Wow! I did not think I’d like this book and I LOVE this series! I couldn’t put it down to the point that I read each of the first three books in this series in a day each. On the fourth day, I slept. Such an exciting story full of dynamic characters.
This is an action packed sci fi set in a beautifully built world with all new species interacting and conflicting, with a sprinkle of romance. It is a entertaining book through and through with only one gripe.
Although the book excels in world building, action, and mystery, the character building could use a little work.
But don’t you think for …
