Welcome to Fortune Academy, a school where supernaturals can feel at home—except, I have no idea what the hell I am.The last thing I remember is arriving at the massive gates with a Bounty Hunter staring me down. I have a feeling he was supposed to take me to the monster holding arena to fight and die. Instead, I’m Fortune Academy’s newest student.I can relate to the monsters in ways the other … relate to the monsters in ways the other students can’t. My mentor, who is way too hot for his own good, tells me my behavior is the result of my memory loss and that I’m just trying to identify with a past pain that I’ve buried too far to feel. I think he’s wrong. I think the reason I can’t relate to any of the students is because I’m one of the monsters they’re trained to kill.
I don’t fit into any of the supernatural cliques, but that doesn’t stop me from collecting bullies. A brawny alpha shifter, a moody dark mage, and a playboy demi-god have decided to break me. They think I don’t have any powers and that I was recruited by mistake. It’ll be their funeral if they push me too far, because this girl isn’t taking any of their shit.
My name is Lily Fallen, but don’t let my pretty face fool you. I’m a monster in a school uniform and it’s only a matter of time before I teach my bullies a lesson they won’t forget.
Fortune Academy: Year One is the first of three novels in an upper YA/NA paranormal academy series. Expect a slow-burn enemies-to-lovers romance where there are five guys and no choosing required!

Fortune Academy: Year One is Book 1 in the Fortune Academy series. J.R. Thorn has a unique way with words and an awesome imagination to create a masterpiece with awesome world building that is populated with excellently developed characters. Imagine waking up and not knowing who you are or who you can trust. Then being placed into the Academy where you are looked down on and distained, but Lily will only take this for so long. This is a fast-paced, action-packed, page-turning adventure that draws you in and you experience what Lily does. Loved this book and am anxious to get my hands on Book 2 to see what adventure the J.R. Thorn has in store for Lily. Received an ARC and this is my voluntary and honest review.
I absolutely loved this story!!! I had no idea who she was until the end. Then I smacked myself. Was like wow was not expecting that. I love this authors books. And this one did not disappoint. Loved it!!! Definitely a must read. Storyline is awesome. Seriously need the next book.
I am loving this new series so far!
Couldn’t stop reading once I started. I am a huge fan of Academy Stories and this has become one of my latest favorites! It’s really good and pulls you in. The characters are great and I want to know more!!! Can’t wait for the next book!!! Highly recommend this!
ONE FAN-TABU-LOUS TREAT!!!
Rock and roll baby! Talk about rocking this baby to the core. Oh man, what a joy. Thorn totally nailed this bad boy 100% on point with one dramatic storyline and gripping plot that catapults this baby to life beautifully. A churning eddy of inadvertant events and vexing circumstances keep you flipping page after page. Hurdling the trials and tribulations that propels those swirling emotions bursting into play smoothly. The characters are authentic, consistent and realistic with depth and qualities it’s easy to relate. Sparks fly as confusion, mayhem and suspense ensues in epic proportions. Drama, pulse racing, smooth flowing wonder that melds all the pieces together sleek, shiny and tight. The scenes are so colorfully detailed and descriptive it gives the illusion you were right there in the middle of ground zero with them. Remarkable job Thorn, thanks for sharing this little gem with us.
This book was wonderful. It’s about a girl who is supernatural with no memory. It is funny, heartwarming, romantic, and full of angst. I recommend this book to everyone.
Imagine sort of just waking up, having no idea what you are, where you come from, why you remember/know nothing and having to just navigate life, without knowing who you can trust … this is where we find Lily and I would not want to be here … at least so far. I expect as the story/series goes on, she’ll lead a more enviable life, but we’ll see.
When this book opens, I’m completely intrigued and instantly attached to Lily; before I can even register that there’s action and budding physical attraction that seems to promise romance.
It’s a very fast-paced book in an academy setting, shrouded in mystery, complete with mean girls and bullying, sexy shifters, shady teachers and … students fighting to the death, what?
Not wanting to share spoilers of any kind, I won’t say too much except that it was a very addictive read and I cannot wait to dive into book 2. Strongly recommend this series.
I do recommend first reading the same author’s ‘Seven Sins’ series though; it meant there were fun little things and references that made sense to me, but still remained mysteries to Lily.
No editing mistakes were noted.
No continuity issues found.
Character development is advanced.
World-building is utterly brilliant and all I want to do is get lost in more of Thorn’s books.
There’s no reason I can find to not give this ALL the stars.
Note: I have this book in print, ebook and audio! (Yes, I’m obsessed.) But my point is, I listened to this book and the narration totally added to the experience thanks to the super smooth voice, noting to have to adapt to … and this is coming from someone who generally cannot tolerate being read to. This narrator tells the story, doesn’t pronounce anything weird, is calming to listen to … complete perfection.
This book was all action right from the beginning, J.R. Thorn weaves a tale of magic and intrigue and an exciting cast of characters in the cut-throat world of the acadamy Lily is thrust into. We are left with two burning questions, just who is Lily Fallen, and when is book 2 out?!
Great story, fun admirable characters. Enjoyable and left me in need of more story.
I was drawn in and read this all in one night. Lily’s frustration at not being able to remember her past mounts as she draws trouble to herself like a magnet. Not willing to take any BS she becomes the center of trouble in no time. By the end of the book you get some clues as to what her destiny may be but your also left with some mysteries to solve, so yes there’s a bit of a cliff hanger not too horrible though. There is some adult content.
4 stars for Fortune Academy: Year One by J.R. Thorn. This is book one in the Fortune Academy. Lily knows something is not right with her, but she does not know what. She has no memories. She is being taken to Fortune Academy by a hot Bounty Hunter named Dante. She does not know that she belongs there, and no one can know what she really is. Lily is a strong character, even though she is considered a dud she does not let anyone push her around. The academy has cliques and Lily is not a part of any of them. At first Lily seems to whine about her situation but then she seems to grow. The book has a whole host of supernaturals and Lily finds she is drawn to a few of them but unsure of why. I do not wanna tell you who they are because they have not been reveled yet. You just get some glimpses of who they might be. I will say this is a slow-burn romance and I completely ok with that. I want the relationships to advance naturally. You know being a woman you want to be loved because of yourself not because fate deemed it. There is a couple who could be in the harem that I am not a fan of. I am hoping if it is them that they redeem themselves. I will say Thorn did not disappoint with this book. I cannot wait to discover what and who Lily is. Book two here I come.
The story is very intriguing. It was beautifully written and the characters were stunningly developed. Lily is a fascinating character. The is so much mystery about her that it draws you in and keeps you glued to it. There is drama, suspense, and action involved throughout the story. I am very intrigued to see where is story is going. It is definitely worth reading and doesn’t disappoint.
Note: I received this book from the author and I voluntarily give this review, it is my honest opinion.
J.R. Thorn is now one of my favorite reverse harem authors, I first read her work in the Elemental Fae Academy series and after that, I was hooked. I have a couple of her books now and I plan on getting more but when I had the opportunity to listen to Fortune Academy, which was put on my tbr, I couldn’t wait. Fortune Academy was everything I could have asked in a Thorn book and more, I absolutely loved it.
The story follows Lilli as she joins the other supernaturals at Fortune Academy, who are all trying to discover who they truly are but not all supernaturals are equal and Lilli is gonna have to fight for her place but with cruel supernaturals everywhere you turn how is a girl supposed to fit in? Well, Lilli doesn’t. She doesn’t know what type of supernatural she is but she’s smart and starts to figure out she is powerful. Lilli is a strong female character who doesn’t let herself or her friends get bullied around, she stands up for herself, has confidence and basically doesn’t care what anyone thinks, she plays things smart and I love that.
The guys in her harem haven’t really been revealed, they have been hinted at, out of all them I really only dislike one, maybe he will grow on me but this is a slow-build romance and not too much happens in this book but I am looking forward to Lilli’s interaction to all these alpha males, what until they realize that Lilli is in charge.
Fortune Academy was an excellent read, the narrator, Vanessa Moyen, was perfect for the story. This was a really interesting beginning to a series, it was a fun and quick read that I feel in love with. Thorn did not disappoint, I relished every second of this story and I can’t wait for more. If you are looking for a supernatural academy reverse harem then I would highly suggest Fortune Academy, it is full of magic, bullies, mystery, romance and so much more. I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am for the rest of this series.
This first book in the Fortune Academy, A bully RH paranormal romance. The characters are great. Lily is strong, and sassy. I loved her! The storyline is entertaining, and intriguing, filled with twists and turns and action. The world building is well done, and complex. Vanessa Moyen did a great job with the narration. She has a beautiful voice, easy to understand. I would love to listen to the next book in the Series, to know what happens next! I was given a free review copy of the audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
I liked it overall as I love books with strong leading ladies
I love Lily’s trials and tribulations in the search for her memories and what she fully is. Her story is full of suspense, intensity, danger, and some humorous situations. I’ll enjoy this series very much.
Lily is dropped off at the academy by a bounty hunter. Unable to access her powers, she has collected several bullies. They will be shocked when her powers come forward. Watch out, boys!
I cant get enough of this book. Its vividly detailed and completely sucks you in and has you on the edge of your seat. The characters are amazing my favorite is Lily, she is strong and doesn’t let anyone push her around but would do anything for the ones she cares about. I absolutely loved this book and definitely recommend it.
New author for me and I was very happy about it. A new twist on supernaturals that I like and now I must read the 2nd book!
I’ve read some of her newer work with a co-author and had no issues with the work. This felt different. There were some grammar errors but not a huge deal. I wouldnt say there isn’t character development or story development but it sorta sat on the cusp of not enough in my opinion. I wanted more building in those areas. It was a quick book and the one love scene at the end felt rushed like the author wanted to throw us a bone? It just didnt feel like it belonged in a way. It was just okay for me. Doesnt necessarily draw me to continue the series but I probably will just to see how the 2nd book goes
J. R. Thorn brings us a story that has suspense, mystery, characters that can good at one time and evil , the next minute. It draws you and doesn’t let you go. Welcome to Fortune Academy were everyone has supernatural abilities even if you don’t know what they are. Book one has been exciting and I can hardly wait until book 2. I’m loving this series already
