Note from the Author: FOREVER is the third in The Trelawneys of Williamsburg series. There is a complex revenge murder mystery that crosses three centuries and all of the books, and it is NOT recommended this book be read independently. Consider first reading TENDER and IMMORTAL before beginning FOREVER. Each book contains plot developments that put in motion events of the next book, as well as revealing events that occurred in previous books. Reading the books out of order may not be the optimum reading experience.

Forever is the third book in the Trelawneys of Williamsburg series by Anne Meredith. This book continues from where Immortal ended and brings the reader through the rest of the Revolutionary War and the surrender of Cornwallis. It nicely ties up the storylines of the Trelawney, Miller and Adams families as they travel through time to unite, separate, put an end to the problems caused by the Mannings and continue on in their lives. This is a series that combines history, romance, adventure and a bit of fantasy.
I loved this series of books because of the way they accentuate the role of free blacks and slaves in this countries fight for freedom. It’s obvious their contribution was essential in winning the war. It’s a heritage to be proud of and should be claimed by those who’s ancestors fought for freedom even if they still were not free in the end. THESE are the black lives that matter and they loved this country free or slave.
As you read these books you begin to understand the complexity of ending the horror of slavery. For Washington and Jefferson as well as many like them it came down to a question of opportunity for people they cared for and felt responsible for if they were freed. For many others they saw no horror in what they were doing by enslaving people and treating them no better than cattle. Slavery was embedded in this country AND indentured servitude was. We speak about slavery but never about the white indentured servants who were also enslaved for years, decades or lifetimes themselves and not treated much better than slaves.
What I am taking away from reading this series of books is an understanding that even something that is morally wrong can’t be changed with the snap of a finger. This was a brand new country that had to find a way to move forward with development of leadership roles, laws, rights we take for granted today but NO ONE anywhere else on earth had at that time. Change takes time and if there’s no template for that change it takes longer.
The fact that these patriots wrote the most brilliant document ever seen even today, the Declaration of Independence and Constitution, is an example of their collective genius. It is the most civilized document written and it was written in uncivilized times. Things were not perfect and slavery didn’t end but I firmly believe this group of American patriots created what was the first step of ending the inhumane treatment of others.
Through the entwined storylines of this series we see how people of different races grew morally and emotionally within families and friendships. We are given a glimpse of our roots. We are shown that what we believe should have been a simple change for the better of mankind was anything but.
The reader is lucky enough to view the past through books that completely entertain but also educate and make you think. You have to ask yourself how could these men have accomplished perfection in an imperfect world. The conclusion is they did the best they could and it honestly is better than anyone in history has ever done under insurmountable odds.
This is a series every American who doubts the greatness of their country should read. You’ll learn we are a great country and we are great because a group of ordinary men came together in desperation and those men together brought out the genius in each other. Out of their genius and with the help of a bunch poor country boys with rifles they defeated the greatest military power on earth and from that defeat created what was and still is viewed as a utopia to the downtrodden in other countries, the United States of America.
