He was just a freckle-faced, redheaded kid with green eyes and a strangely campelling stare when Mather Mastiff first saw him an the auctioneer’s block. One hundred credits and he was hers.
For years the old woman was his only family. She loved him, fed him, taught him everything she knew — even let him keep the deadly flying snake he called Pip.
Then Mother Mastiff mysteriously disappeared and … mysteriously disappeared and Flinx took Pip to tail her kidnappers. Across the forests and swamps of the winged world called Moth, their only weapons were Pip’s venom… and Flinx’s unusual Talents.

I recommend any of the “Pip and Flinx” books. Like the Harry Potter series, they can be read by children with good imaginations and adults who are not stodgy. They are fantasy and yet believable.
The Pip and Flinx series is fascinating. This is the beginning although not the first one written
Lots of different sorts of characters. Unusual situations. And yet not at all bizarre.
This gives the origin of Pip and his mini-dragon. The pair are standard characters in many of Gorden R Dickson’s stories. I enjoyed it a lot when I was a teen, but now that I’m older, I’m less attracted to variants of ‘chosen one’ stories – that’s the reason I didn’t give it 5 Stars.
If you’re in the market or writing a ‘chosen one’ or ‘superman style protgonist’, even though this one is a bit dated, it stands up.
I didn’t think much of it. I gave it a chance but finally decided I had better things to do. There was a lot going on but nothing happened.
Good start to an interesting series.
I was only familiar with Alan Dean Foster’s work on Star Trek. This series is great so far. Looking forward to the rest!
Read the whole series as it came out. This is the first in the series and it sets the stage for a interesting universe and likeable protagonist.
One of my all time favorites!!
A funny, whimsical science fiction series.
What a great book! And talk about taking ya to another world! FANTASTIC
It was better than I expected. I felt very engaged with the characters and I could visualize the world that the author created. Even better, unlike many (if not most) first books in a series, this was pretty much a stand alone–the main conflict of the book was resolved. It was easy to see that there was more story to be told, but the ending wrapped up the main conflict in a satisfying way.
One of my favorite series from my youth that is still a fun read.
This is my third time reading this book, and I still love it!
My first time was as a teenager where I identified very closely with Flinx.
Reading it as a mature adult has me connecting with different aspects of the story, while still identifying with the young Flinx.
A fantastic series that I’ve been rereading for decades. Recommend to any Scifi fan
This series & I have a long history together. This first time I read this series and this book specifically was approximately 35 years ago. I’ve read this series several times since. The characters and situations are very enjoyable. Always hoping for a new book
I have read most of the Flinx/Pip books and have enjoyed them all. Would recommend any of Alan Dean Foster’s books.
You need to read the series in order to get the best experience.
interesting start to the series.
Got me started on Flinx! Wonderful world to visit!
