What if your first job turned into a treasure hunt?
It’s 1987. Sam is a rookie geologist who finds herself working for a dodgy entrepreneur in the small South American country of Sierramar. At first, it seems as if she has made a mistake. Bored and badly paid, she struggles to adapt; thank goodness for her mad friend Gloria.
When a work trip to the jungle yields a clue to a long-hidden … yields a clue to a long-hidden archaeological treasure, Sam gets involved in an expedition to uncover the truth. But she’s not the only one who is searching, and some will kill to get there first.
Will Sam survive her first adventure?

Good development though occasionally a bit obvious where things are headed. Still an enjoyable read.
Good plot. Held interest all the way too the end
A lost gold mine…what could be better?
Keeps your interest.
Fool’s Gold was a fun, original story with a basis in history & folklore. Very good read!
I found this adventure a little slow moving but did love the description of the area and the people.
Great read
Set in South America good story. Will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Great story well written.
The first novel in the series, Fool’s Gold, introduces readers to geologist Samantha Harris, who prefers to be called Sam. She knows her own mind, which is a good thing, as she embarks on a career in what was considered a man’s world.
PJ has created a number of larger-than-life characters whose interaction with Sam either help her on her journey or attempt to thwart her plans. She set off on her first unpaid field project to gain experience. As the plot unfolds, you’ll find yourself urging Sam on while at the same time, hoping she can overcome obstacles thrown up by others. An excellent opening to the series, which had me turning the pages in anticipation of what would come next.
Easy read. No complicated plots yet intriguing enough to keep you reading. Fun.
Decent story but very slow to get started and some social commentary that didn’t add to the story. However a fun, light read.
Nice to read something not set in the same old places. Enjoyed learning something.
Sam Harris is a plucky, rather naive female geologist, one of the first women to move into this profession, and as such she has a lot to learn.
Getting her first job after university is not easy, and so she accepts a position searching for gold reserves in mountainous rainforests in Africa, working for a very dodgy boss.
We learn a lot about Sam in the book, and she becomes a very believable character. The period when the book is set, 1987, is evoked brilliantly, especially the comparatively basic technology.
The story is exciting, well told and certainly kept me turning the pages.
This is a great first book in an excellent series.
The book left me guessing on how things would turn out. I enjoyed the adventure.
Really enjoyed reading this book. Wish the next books were available for NOOK, not just in paperbooks!!
A well-constructed story that travels through rarely reported parts of the Amazon chasing history, mystery, redemption, gold and the start of a new career. The narrator and the one who the story is built around is a newly minted English mining engineer who is trying to penetrate the male-only wall separating her from her chosen profession. A varied group of somewhat comedic characters pass through the narrative as does a variety of experiences that in the end bring maturity and dimension to our formerly down-trodden now self-secure engineer. Read the book because its entertaining, informative and laced with a generous dose of feel-good-factor.
I had a hard time putting this book down. It was very exciting!
Good read
Fun book, action packed and fast paced. I had a hard time putting this one down.
