“One of the most enjoyable marriages of the fantasy and mystery genres on the shelves,”(Cinescape) the Dresden Files have become synonymous with action-packed urban fantasy and nonstop fun. Fool Moon continues the adventures of Jim Butcher’s most famous—and infamous—reluctant hero… in the Chicago phone book. But lately, Harry Dresden hasn’t been able to dredge up any kind of work: magical, mundane, or menial.
Just when it looks like he can’t afford his next meal, a murder comes along that requires his particular brand of supernatural expertise. There’s a brutally mutilated corpse, and monstrous animal markings at the scene. Not to mention that the killing took place on the night of a full moon. Harry knows exactly where this case is headed. Take three guesses—and the first two don’t count…

I learned a lot about werewolves. Loved how he used all ‘types’ in the book.
Cozy readers who love paranormal may enjoy this book if they have a tolerance for a bit of violence.
Fool Moon is book two in The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. We are taken on another mystery, full of suspense and adventure.
Harry is one of the good guys. But he struggles and he’s flawed. He isn’t perfect. I like him and I like how hard he tries to protect everyone around him.
As for the women in Harry’s life I’m not a fan of either at this point. I don’t care for reporters. I just don’t like them, but Susan came through and helped Harry out. Though I feel she’s with him just to get a story. Murphy the detective she was mistrustful, impulsive, and violent in this installment. She was not very nice and put Harry in a situation that made things worse, instead of letting him explain.
The werewolf lore was very interesting, especially the twist at the very end. The teaser about Harry’s mother was a tease for Harry and the readers. I’m excited to see what more Harry and us will learn about himself, his parents, and his past.
Fool Moon was another great read in The Dresden Files series. I loved the mystery and the surprises we get. It’s not straightforward and the developments will surprise you.
Rated: 4 Stars
I enjoyed this book wvwn more than the last. No. I loved this book.
Everything about it is just brilliant, the story telling, the lore , the characters and of course the world building.
We learn a little more about the world , the magic and all or some other things that live in this world.
We meet some werewolves in this book and I loved the idea about different type what and how they made or how they made. We get different types of them in the same universe, whicg is something we don’t see all too often. While it was a bit confusing in the beginning, I loved it and I loved that we learned along with Harry at the same time.
We also learn more about Harry, and it is heavily hinted that there is more to him or his parents than let to believe. I have a few ideas but we shall see how right or wrong was in later books…… I hope lol.
I like everyone in this book some are more than others but that is normal, there are a few plot twists and shocks in this book as well.
Bob the skull is still one of my favorite things, aside from Harry, that I hope we get more of in future books. Of course I loved Harry, maybe a bit too much lol…… I love his humor. His loyalty to his friends, he will help them and stay by them even if he thinks they no longer will stay by his site. I love his friendship to Murphy and to be honest I sort of hope it stays a friendship.
Susan, I wasn’t sure about her last book, but I really come to love her and her relationship to Harry.
We meet Tara in this book and I also liked her and hope we get more of her In future books.
Overall, I loved this book, it was fun to follow and learn more about Harry and this world, it was also nail biting and oh so funny. Many laugh out moments but also some serious tender moments.
Again, listen to the audio narrated by James Marsters and it was so, so good.
I give it 5
As always a very enjoyable Harry Dresden novel, building upon the previous one and always leading up to a continuation of the series.
This series was recommended to me a few years ago. I just started reading them. This book got a bit too descriptive and gory at times, but I found it hard to put down. If you like detective books with magic and mythical creatures, then you’ll like these.
Whole series exceptional urban fantasy. Harry Dresden is original but very familiar because he encompasses many well loved archetypes from other genres. Hard boiled detective noir, good hearted poor wizard who protects the weak, Travis McGee, Jim Rockford, Spenser, Spider-Man, you probably get the idea. Early novels like this one you can read stand alone to get a taste but later ones benefit from reading in order.
In this, the second of the AMAZING DRESDEN FILES, our intrepid wizard PI is snared once again in a paranormal mess, trying to help a rag tag bunch of werewolves and trying to stay alive, even though his own “friends” on the police force are trying to pin the murders that riddle this book on him. Highly recommended!—Alice Bello is the Author of Min’s Vampire, Broken Bear and the Naughty Little Black Book Series.
Harry and his friends are back with another threat facing his hometown. Something is killing people in macabre fashion, looking suspiciously like werewolves. Harry’s …not so much friend after incidents in book one…but still sort of working associate police detective Karrin Murphy, calls Harry in to help solve what’s turning in to a bigger mess then either one believed.
Harry is really starting to grow on me. He’s just so…normal! Aside from his wizarding powers, he’s seriously down to earth, has a bit of a hero complex, and admits when he’s scared. His cases keep my attention span engaged, trying to decide what he may or may not do next. Sometimes I’m agreeing with his decisions. Often times, I’m scratching my head in bewilderment because the man can’t stand accepting help while he’s trying to save his little slice of Chicago!
Also, the vibes between Susan and Harry…and Karrin and Harry…it’s keeing things interesting in the romance department for sure!
I’m totally kicking myself for not giving these books a chance sooner! Then again, I can easily binge on them without nail biting in wait for the next release!
I actually liked these books I have them in paperback. The best thing is no cliffhanger. A problem find Harry and at the end it gets solved.
Well that was intense.
Well – you can now call me a Jim Butcher/Harry Dresden fan.
Loved it, fantastic multi-climax ending. One of the best books I’ve read so far this year.
A couple of small quibbles with some of the [INSERT: “Escape by the skin of your teeth”] moments that overstepped the believability mark and dropped me out of the suspension of disbelief. I know it’s a very fine line between gripping suspenseful drama and a deus ex machina, and occasionally JB smudges it.
But such quibbles fade into the shadows when compared to the truly powerful writing that stalked the back half of this book like the fabulous loup-garou.
Looking forward to getting my teeth into book #3.
This book intro the werewolf group that will play major roles in future dresden books. This book is not on my favorite dresden series books but it is still worth the read if you enjoy the series.
A TERRIFIC READ
So many great things about this book! At times, it’s scary, funny with its witty wordplay, and engrossing for the reader. For Jim Butcher’s second book in “The Dresden Files” series, this book was excellent reading. It had chill factors incorporated from the werewolf themes, the variety of shape-shifters, and a killer (literally and figuratively) climax that had me guessing right up until the end as to how Harry Dresden was going to get out of this one alive. The story’s pace makes for quick reading. Butcher’s take on the werewolf trope is novel and a bit unpredictable. I very much like Dresden’s developing relationship with the police director Karrin Murphy deepening into serious matters of trust. And the tension factor gets raised to a high bar as Dresden takes on his Baddest Boss yet. It’s a great read!
It’s Harry Dresden!! He’s fighting demons and bad guys and saving Chicago.
I love this series; I hope Butcher never stops writing them.
Fool Moon is the second in the Harry Dresden series by Jim Butcher. I’m a bit late to this series and there are numerous other detailed reviews for this book so I won’t rehash it all again.
Suffice it to say, I love Harry Dresden. He’s a great wizard, but the author allows him to make mistakes and do stupid things. That’s what makes him so likeable. In this book, Harry gets beat up a lot – way more than the average person can stand in 24 hours and that’s my only complaint about this book. I know Harry is a wizard and all, but he was shot and beat way too much for even him to be able to pull off what he did. I love the internal dialogue and I especially love Bob, the skull. He’s such a good sidekick. I hope Mr. Butcher includes him more in future books.
This was a fun and entertaining book and I definitely recommend it.
Black wizards, murders and werewolves, oh My! Filled with mystery, action, and strong characters make for an intricate story line elegantly written; made for a truly Excellent read!
Jim Butcher is great!
In book 2 of the Dresden files, Dresden is learning about himself. We learn the more about the beginnings od]f his prison story but not all. He teams up with another magic creature to defeat evil magic creatures. The battles are well written and exciting. Plus, hey: he gets a little bit in this one with an attractive female reporter.
I like the development of those surrounding Dresden.
“…so there I was being strangled by a ranting, half-naked madman in the middle of the woods, with a she-werewolf dangling from a rope snare…”
I’m doing a re-read of the Dresden Files and with each book, I’m reminded why I’m so freakin’ in love with this series! If you are a fan of kick ass stories, even if you aren’t a fan of the paranormal, I can’t recommend this series enough!
I loved “The Dresden Files” TV show several years ago and enjoy reading the books that inspired the show. Dresden is a Wizzard and helps the police solve paranormal crimes. The characters are well developed and the plot is intriguing.
Harry Dresden is one of my favorite flawed characters of the supernatural genre. He’s a Wizard of high order, a chauvinist, a mushy emotional guy and a danger magnet. In Fool Moon, Harry takes on lycanthropes, werewolves and the mob in a fast paced and nasty. The humor is sarcastic and irreverent. The battles are gory. The friendships are deep and develop from book to book. The stories resolve at the end of each book. I just love this series.
