It’s quite something to look in the mirror and not recognize your own face…When Corrine Williams suspected her abusive boyfriend was embezzling from the bank he worked for, she turned his laptop over to the police. She just wanted him locked up long enough to get herself, and her daughter Maisy, away from him. But it turned out he was no low-level white collar criminal– he was moving money … criminal– he was moving money around for the Mob.
Now, she’s Serena Chandler, a federally protected witness in the WITSEC program. They gave her a new name, and a beautiful new face. But while WITSEC can make her into someone else, they can’t erase the trauma of her old life. Not for her, and not for her daughter, Maisy.
Seeing her mother abused took a terrible toll on Maisy. Before Serena could get her out, Maisy stopped speaking– completely. Now, Serena has no idea how to help her. If Maisy feels safe, she might begin to heal. But how can she feel safe while they’re in danger every day?
Serena and Maisy are spirited away to Starlight Falls, a picturesque town in the mountains of Arkansas. Serena is enchanted with the Victorian village, and the sweet little cottage called Fox Den, which will be their temporary refuge. The Federal agent in charge of her case advises two things: Keep a low profile, and don’t attract the attention of local law enforcement.
She thought it would be easy, until she met Matt Murdoch.
Matt is the local Sheriff; criminally sexy, steady, and sweet– a dangerous combination. Serena is more drawn to him by the day, but he’s the one man in town she’s been expressly warned to steer clear of. Besides, how can she have a relationship with someone when she can’t even tell them the truth about who she is? And what man in his right mind would want a woman who is running from the Mob, with a profoundly traumatized child?
Matt Murdoch’s ex-wife burned down their marriage, leaving him with nothing but pain, loss, and regrets. He’d been alone since the divorce and had no desire to change that, until he met Serena Chandler.
Matt has seen enough in his line of work to know that Serena is in trouble. She’s running from something, and she doesn’t trust him enough to tell him what– or who– is pursuing her. Matt doesn’t know what kind of danger she and her sweet, silent little girl are facing, but he knows he has to find a way to help them both. Because if Serena leaves Starlight, she’s going to take his heart with her.
Starlight Falls is the perfect place to hide. But could it also be a place where both Serena and Maisy could begin to heal?

Serena is on the run from her violent ex and the mob. As she is a valuable witness she and her young daughter are placed in witness protection. They are relocated to the sleepy town of Starlight Falls where Serena meets the gorgeous Matt, who also happens to be the one person she should stay away from, the towns Sheriff. Can Serena keep her traumatised daughter safe and can she avoid falling for the local law man? This book grabbed me from the start. It is so well written, grammatically correct and the plot is very gripping. The characters Serena and Matt are believable and I especially love the way that the children have been written. It’s a terrific read and I’m looking forward to reading the second in the series. Highly recommend!
Fly Away Home by Genevieve Davis is book One in the Starlight Falls series. This is the story of Corrine Williams ‘Serena Chandler’ and Matt Murdoch.
Corrine finally took the step to get away from her abusive boyfriend by turning his Laptop over for him to be arrested for his criminal acts….what she didn’t know that he was involved in the Mod.
Now she is in the WITSEC program with a new name and her daughter who was so traumatized by the abuse she doesn’t’ speak. Her new life is in Starlight Falls, Arkansas wheres she is told to keep a low profile and do not get involved with the local police. But Matt is making that last one a hard request to keep. Matt been burned by his ex-wife so he not usually so easy to fall for a women but there is something about Serena and her daughter. Matt knows there is more going on with her and he is looking to find out before they all get hurt.
Enjoyed their moving story.
Davis is a absolutely phenomenal writer. She has a way with words that brings everything to life—you see in color, you sense the smells, you hear the sounds, you feel the touch, and you taste the sweetness of the romance. Davis’ voice as a writer reaches a depth that many authors could only dream of. I thoroughly enjoyed being in Serena’s head. She was a very inspiring character. Her bruised self esteem actually came across as endearing. Her strength as a character came from within despite having been in an abusive relationship, it was very inspiring to women in general. This is a story about starting over and building yourself up after being teared down. Serena was emotionally and physically shattered to pieces. Now, she’s given a new identity, a new face, and a new home. That being said… I do have to say that 160k words is a bit too long. In my option, it contained an overwhelming amount of detail about irrelevant things. Too much information about irrelevant characters and past relationships which in my opinion would have accomplished the same with only a few words. Many of the dialogues—apart from drawn out—seemed too repetitive. For that reason—and that reason alone—I would give it 4 stars.
Corrine aka Serena only wanted to get away from her abusive husband so she gathered information along with his lap top and took it to the authorities. She thought it would give her enough time to go into hiding from her husband. What she didn’t know was the type of real work her husband was into and how it would change the course of her life. Now in hiding and posing as Serena she has been told to stay away from the local law enforcement and keep a low profile. All was going well until the man behind the counter at the local store smiled and a fire inside of her took light. little did she know that he was also the local sheriff. Matt has his own problems. They are two individuals trying to catch a break in life. He knows she is hiding something and wants her to let him in to help but the risk is dangerous. Serena has some decisions to make and danger is just a over her shoulders. Will she take a chance with Matt for a lifetime of happiness?

Actually 3.5 stars.
Fly Away Home – This is my first read by this author and I loved and hated it. Well written with plenty of intrigue, steadily moving storylines and likable characters. This is a story that the reader can get immersed in easily. While there’s a lot of heart wrenching, heartbreaking happenings going on, there’s plenty of laughter, some big belly laughs.
She has a lot of baggage that messes with her head, and his heart is so big that he gets into trouble doing the right thing. There’s something about Southern folks that can bring joy while stompin’ down the troubles. Gemma is probably my favorite character, next to Aunt Irene and Mary, which is difficult to pick since there are many heartwarming, lovable characters throughout this lovely story.
There are too many explicit sex scenes, 2 -3 ongoing chapters sometimes, which for me took away from the story since they were boring and I skipped them; if they said anything important it didn’t take away from the story. There was frequent usage of what we Southerners call cussin’ and infrequent use of vulgar language by minor characters.
Unfortunately, I was continuously distracted by the author’s overabundant use of lowercased God; either use God or find some other expressions; English has over 600K words so the possibilities are endless. Lowercased God shows intolerance and prejudice, which we all know is not PC (excuse my French). The story also needs editing for proper use of punctuation, especially missing commas, which change the meanings of the sentences, along with missing or misspelled words. Sadly, the story is not complete and continues in another book. I contacted the author to review her work and received this book through Booksprout. 3.5*
Very well written and captivating story. It is exciting, suspenseful, intriguing, danger, emotional and so much more. She is hiding from the mob and an ex with her traumatized daughter. She meets him and he is in law enforcement. The one thing to avoid but she is so drawn to him she can’t. I recommend it. I received a review copy by booksprout and voluntarily review it.
