“Readers new to the work of Christopher Moore will want to know two things immediately. First: Where has this guy been hiding? (Answer: In plain sight, since he has a cult following.)…[H]e writes laid back fables straight out of Margaritaville, on the cusp of humor and science fiction.”—Janet Maslin, New York Times Whale researcher Nathan Quinn has a problem. It’s not a new problem; in fact, it’s … problem; in fact, it’s been around for nearly 20 million years. And Nate’s spent most of his adult life working to solve it. You see, although everybody (well, almost everybody) knows that humpback whales sing (outside of human composition, the most complex songs on the planet) no one knows why. Nate, a Ph.D. in behavior biology, intends to discover the answer to this burning question—and soon.
Every winter he and Clay Demolocus, his partner in the Maui Whale Research Foundation, ply the warm waters between the islands of Maui and Lanai, recording the eerily beautiful songs of the humpbacks and returning to their lab for electronic analysis. The trouble is, Nate’s beginning to wonder if he hasn’t spent just a little too much time in the sun. Either that, or he’s losing his mind. Because today, as he was shooting an I.D. photo of a humpback tail fluke, Nate could’ve sworn he saw the words “Bite Me” scrawled across the whale’s tail. . .

Very far fetched… but entertaining!
This is quite possibly the strangest book I’ve ever read. I expected a the marine biologists and whale researchers — I was not prepared for everything else.
I don’t want to say a lot because I don’t want to ruin the surprise, so I’m going to say this:
1. I love the humor. I laughed out loud at several places during this book.
2. There’s a …
I love Christopher Moore, but this is not one of my favorites. The characters and humor dont pull you in like most of his other books do.
Some parts believable, some not. Entertaining, though.
I think this must be the oddest book I have ever read! The first third is delightful, I loved the sass/sarcasm of the main character and “thought” I knew what was going on. Hah! The remainder of the story takes a total left turn and I was agog. No idea whatsoever where it was going or what what was happening! Spoiler alert: it suddenly …
Just wonderful, well defined characters, and so very funny!
I love Christopher Moore’s books, and Fluke is my favorite. Like his other books it’s a little bit nutty and very sweet. The characters are well-developed, and the plot is just twisty enough. Great book!
Not up to Moore’s usual standards. It has some funny and entertaining sections. Overall, a fine beginning that seems to lose focus and humor.
I read this while on vacation in Mexico. The lightness of the story and the ocean setting made it a great read for the beach. Chris Moore at his best!
Funny, very entertaining. I have read several books by Christopher Moore, and laughed out loud many times!
I stayed confused for the majority, if not the entirety of this book. That’s not to say that I wasn’t entertained. The very ideas brought forth in this book were intriguing all the while perplexing. I found myself wanting to read more, not necessarily with an urgency, but at least with a persistent curiosity as to what the heck was going on. This …
