NASA discovered the alien ship lurking in the asteroid belt in the 1960s. They kept the Target under intense surveillance for decades, letting the public believe they were exploring the solar system, while they worked feverishly to refine the technology needed to reach it.The ship itself remained silent, drifting.Dr. Jane Holloway is content documenting nearly-extinct languages and had never … and had never contemplated becoming an astronaut. But when NASA recruits her to join a team of military scientists for an expedition to the Target, it’s an adventure she can’t refuse.
The ship isn’t vacant, as they presumed.
A disembodied voice rumbles inside Jane’s head, “You are home.”
Jane fights the growing doubts of her colleagues as she attempts to decipher what the alien wants from her. As the derelict ship devolves into chaos and the crew gets cut off from their escape route, Jane must decide if she can trust the alien’s help to survive.

Jennifer Foehner Wells: Fluency
a dark horse (to me) in science fiction
The plot is novel and involving. I know a sequel is OUT there
From the very start, the protagonists of Fluency are attracted. You know there will be a relationship at some point just reading the first couple of pages, but this is truly a modernistic science fiction classic at its best. SF well before the R and outer space is closer than you think. How could you tell if your alien contact was being …
When a book makes me sit down and read the entire thing in a single sitting, I know I have something that I like. It felt exciting learning about the this new world and alien ship alongside the main character Jane.
Now parts of it was a bit rough for me, but I didn’t personally care about them that much. Might take away from your enjoyment sure, …
Literally just finished this. So good on many levels. Character development was 100% on point. The story keeps you hooked the whole time. I’ve already bought the second book because I couldn’t take the suspense and I just didn’t want it to be over.
It’s a good premise with believable future science capabilities .
Thanks for an original science fiction novel that doesn’t focus on warfare. Ei’Brai is certainly an interesting character. A strong female lead is frosting on the cake.
I look forward to reading more Confluence stories!
Very good, original story that made me want to keep reading the series. The occasional, somewhat vulgar sexual scenes did nothing for it, though.
This was an amazing, on the edge, Science fiction novel with a strong female lead character. Also a s low, simmering, romance that ran alongside the main focus of the story. Well worth my time.
Fluency was fun to read and took a little different twist on mankind’s first contact with aliens.
A good read
Fluency by Jennifer Foehner Wells on ebook format. I purchased Remanence Book 2 in the Confluence Book Series right after I finished book 1 and that is unheard of from me. I haven’t done that since reading MaddAddam trilogy by Margaret Atwood and the Wayferers series by Becky Chambers. I will often read books in a series in spurts, reading book …
Original writing style. I enjoyed a different sensation on the descriptions, probably because of the feminine author. Refreshing to experience a new science fiction attitude. Good read!
Really good in places, average in others. Pretty original except where it kind of bogs down with the sexual attraction, “i’m Not good enough for him or her”. Be aware it is first of a series.
It’s a good read.
Interesting situation and well developed characters around alien first encounter. Unexpected plot twists. Can’t wait to read next book in series.
I
This sci-fi read, and the beginning of what will most likely be a great space opera, was very entertaining. The plot is very good and the variety of heroic and nerdy characters move the action very nicely. Unless the story changes drastically, I will buy and enjoy the entire series.
I enjoyed this book and its interesting central idea. Many of the characters were well defined and developed. As others have warned, there is a cliffhanger ending to lead you on to the next book. The whole exploring other worlds, life forms, and points of view was interesting but the climax wrap up was a bit of a let down -don’t want to give a …
Interesting. Well edited. No misspellings or grammatical errors that I noticed. The story flowed well. Female lead character seemed well conceived and described. Some of the action seemed a bit over drawn out. Be warned cliff hanger ending.
