An unusual main character, a fun plot, intrigue and skullduggery; what more can you want? Flight of the 500 has all these and more. I enjoyed this book and recommend it to each reader.
Excellent book with nail biting action, drama, tragedy and a few feel good moments thrown in. Sci-fi space opera at it best!
It may have been well written but it was juvenile in its story line, and very predictable. It was not an enjoyable book to try have slog your way through it. I have Before Inferno so I’ll have to see if that is any better before I choose anymore books from this author.
In this fast paced stand-alone entry in the world of Tavenor’s ‘First of Their Kind’, this is a solidly built world a la The Expanse and Firefly: the tech is well-worn and grimy, the stakes are high, and the betters are going to the bookies, be they digital or be they hyperspace communique. In this hardscrabble universe, some people are trying to get ahead, and some are just getting by. Some people want to shine like stars. And then there are those who want to pull all the strings. I was ever so slightly less impressed with the characterization of Raith as an SI (Synthetic Intellegence) than some of Tavenor’s earlier examples of SI intellegences. He felt very human in a ‘I’m cocky, I’m doing my thing, and screw everyone else’ way. He even gets in the occasional fistfight. But the descriptions of his non-human sensory experience is a lot of fun. Surrounding him is a solid group of interesting side-characters, both allies and enemies, which are worth engaging with and quite a bit of fun.
This book reads as a classic race through space: part Jules Verne, part Star Wars, part Oceans Eleven and all adventure.
This is the perfect summer read: it’s a fun, clever jaunt, full of energy, danger and surprise. If you’re missing blockbusters, pick up this book.
This book is AMAZING! I really enjoyed reading it. I loved the characters and the depth the author brought to them, especially incorporating depth of personality into synths and AI’s. I really enjoyed that i couldn’t predict what happened, but I did feel that i had some ideas of possible things that could go wrong. This was right up my alley, and I can’t wait to read the next in the series. I’m looking forward to going back and reading the beginning of the series this comes into, but it’s absolutely not necessary to understand this book. I just fell in love with it and am ready to devour this author’s works now!!
A 500 light year race where seconds count and nothing is as it seems. This is the story of an incredible grueling, technically difficult, well-conceived race. The first of its kind, it is novel in concept and incredibly dangerous from the gate. The challenges on the course aren’t the only ones Raith is facing though. Demons from his past haunt him and the race itself is filled with outside obstacles, some planted, some completely unexpected. Some conflicts are personal, others have much farther reaching political ramifications. None are without casualty.
This book takes in the Theran universe and features an SI (synthetic intelligence) character but can be enjoyed as a standalone novel. As with the other Theran books, Tavenor explores the concepts of self, identity, friendships, character, and more. Great read for fans of sci-fi space opera who appreciate a great adventure that helps expand your horizons and gives you ideas to expand your horizons.
Flight of the 500 tells the story of Raith, a SI or synthetic intelligence, a racer of spaceships. This is a sci-fi adventure/action that has a little of everything. Pirates, smugglers, racing…it’s all there. The characters are well developed and the plot will keep you well entertained. This is set in the same world as First of Their Kind, although can be read as a stand-alone. I highly recommend this book.
Flight of the 500, my fourth read from author C.D. Tavenor. I’d read the two Legacy of Light! books and this is so very different than those, perhaps the best of the four books I’ve read so far. I was given a Kindle copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
This was an entertaining story. It was full of action and adventure as Raith pilots a new type of ship to try and win a crazy unheard of race with horrible odds. Raith as a character was interesting and the secondary characters were along interesting too. Just a story that kept me reading to see what Raith would do or say next to make others think what??. I did laugh and groan a few times as I rooted for Raith to win and be his snarky self. I liked the action and the pace of the story as it kept things moving and interesting. I honestly liked the story.
Tavenor really hasn’t disappointed with this book – I couldn’t fault it! My experience with the author has made me realise that he really is the master of Sci-Fi, and each book just gets better and better. His deep knowledge of the genre as well as synthetic intelligence shows in his writing, and every page is filled with immense detail that fills your imagination and inner-nerd with joy. This book captivated me from start to finish and I know that the next book in the series will be just as good! I loved Raith’s character so much – even though he appears tough and determined on the outside, we see a completely different side to him as the story progresses, and this combined with yet another fun, solid story line made the book very difficult to put down. I can’t wait to continue Raith’s adventure!
