Ember soon finds her innocent talent is far more dangerous than she believed. The Empire wants to turn her into a deadly weapon. But Ember has plans of her own, and they don’t include living under the Empire’s control.
Because even the best weapons can backfire.
For fans of space opera adventure with dystopian and romance elements.
more
Keeps you guessing can’t put it down
Main character at times seemed to think/act irrationally.
I like the whole series. I am ready for more from the author.
Good story and characters
She goes through hell.
Certainly left me keen to read the next in the series.
I liked this book very much, bought the next in series, waiting on third to be released.
It has a strongly female slant, which might turn off some male readers. Romantic motives play a big role.
Rebecca Rode combines elements of space opera, romance, and fantasy in her novel, Flicker. Ember, a young Romany (Gypsy) fortune teller, is kidnapped, from her home, on a dystopian Earth and forced into a military program, because of her abilities. The plot moves quickly, as Ember has to figure out how to survive on an Empire space ship. Menacing officers abound and the rest of the cadets are not that friendly either. Our heroine and her love interest, Stephan, have to grow up quickly. I find the fact that their romance is not the steamy kind very refreshing. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series.
just ok; good premise to start a series, but not fully developed; to flesh out the story would need another 100 pages
Straight forward plot. Great book for young readers.
Unique concept playing out and presented in a focused and intriguing way!
The characters came alive for me as did their environment like seeing a movie in my mind!
That is always the test of a superb storyline and book for me!
It’s that simple for me in addition to probable or possible believable technology!
Well written Si-Fi, set in a self-constitent world. Good characterization.
I would recommend this book to Sifi fans. Unusual premisse. Lots of action.
It was so good, I’m now reading book 2!!!
I guess I shouldn’t say I’m a Sci Fi fan. Like this one, the first few chapters I’m just not sure where this is going — maybe I should put it down — then – I’m hooked for some intense imaginative reading — and I can hardly put it down. Some of my other stuff will just have to wait.
Not the best writing but not the worst either. The story has potential. A little too much adolescent girl fantasy dreams. Lacks dimension. Yet interesting enough and entertaining enough that I read it till the end and didn’t skip to the end to make sure it was worth it. So, yes recommended to folks who like YA literature.
this was a great read, but left me wanting more as it is continued in ensuing books. There really is no resolution to the story unless you get the subsequent books in the series.
Kept my attention
Good story. Moved at a good pace.
