Fletch, investigative reporter extraordinaire, can’t be bothered with deadlines or expense-account budgets when it comes to getting his story.Working undercover at the beach to dig up a drug-trafficking scheme for his next blockbuster piece, Fletch is invited into a much deeper narrative. Alan Stanwyk, CEO of Collins Aviation and all-around family man, mistakes the reporter for a strung-out … strung-out vagabond and asks him for a favor: kill him and escape to Brazil with $50,000. Intrigued, Fletch can’t help but dig into this suspicious deal he’s being offered.
Dodging the shady beach police as his case begins to break open, and with his temperamental editor Clara pushing for his article, he soon discovers that Stanwyk has a lot to hide and this plan is anything but what it seems.

Forget the film — Chevy Chase was not Fletch. The real Fletch is in these pages. Whenever I teach a class on dialogue, I always recommend FLETCH. This is how it’s done, folks. McDonald has fashioned conversations that go on for pages with virtually no attributions, yet you’re never in doubt as to who said what.
Don’t confuse Fletch the book with Fletch the movie. Both are great, but the book is much more of a cynical noir take than the movie, which goes more slapstick. What’s great about Fletch is that it takes the reader along for a wild ride while also giving you a lot of info about the world of journalist. Some aspects of journalism are dated (the …
Funny
The Fletch series always has the most interesting characters! This one was no exception. I read it a long time ago, and my recent re-reading was just as enjoyable as the first reading. Good characters, great sense of humor, great plot!
As a fan of Fletch, the movie, I picked up Fletch the book and was delighted at how closely the movie followed the book.
I enjoy the Fletch novels. They’re easy to read, funny and have a nice twist at the end. Fletch is a character of the 1970s or 1960s, so he wouldn’t be viewed as sympathetically now.
A fun read. Ehjoyed it all
I had previously seen the movie Fletch and the book is every bit as good. An easy
light read which is at times scary but very entertaining.
Can’t wait to read the next book of the series.
I think that I read this book a hundred years ago (at least it seems like that long ago!). When it appeared as the featured Serial Readout on Barnes and Noble, I was happy to read it again.
Even though it is set in a long ago time, the prehistoric time before cell phones and computers, it is still a fun book to read. Fletch is a wiseass newspaper …
What a Great series! These books are funny and well thought out mysteries!
pretty bad, kinda dumb to me
well written and clever
This was a “well thought out” plot; keeps your interest up from beginning to end, yet doesn’t give away how it’ll end until the end.
Enjoyed the main character’s interaction with others and the twists in the plot.
Fun story, just very dated
I read this years ago and re-read just to see if it was as good as I remembered. It was. Nothing deep here, just a quick jaunt off the beaten path.
Just a little off. This is not very descriptive but this is how it felt!!!;
A classic
Fun character. Well developed plot.
