I was granted an ARC of Joynell Schultz’s “Flame & Fortune (Angels of Sojourn)” via Booksprout; I recommend this book to others based upon its own merits. All opinions expressed within this review are uniquely my own & freely given!
Until next time… Happy Reading!
I love the Angels of Sojourn series. Joynell Schultz has created a world with angels which are not the usual risen human do-gooders, but fallible winged beings with the free will to make mistakes as well as atone for mistakes. It only seems fair that the Devil and the netherworld should also be different from the usual depiction of those. Not only is Schultz unsatisfied with creating very unusual angels and demons, she has to write one of the sweetest paranormal romances I have been privileged to read. Next, please!!!

Flame and Fortune is book 2.5 of the Angels of Sojourn series, and the 7th written so far (two novels, and 5 novellas including this one) with only one more novel to go according to the author. I have read all of the released novels to this point and have enjoyed every one of them. I was looking forward to this one in particular when Mrs. Schultz announced it because it involves not a fallen angel or angel of Sojourn, but an angel of the Underworld.
To begin, this was just as well written and emotionally engaging as the previous books. I enjoyed the read thoroughly and do feel it was a great addition as it helped build the world. The blurb at the end of the book says we’ll get mention of Lena and Kieran (our leads in this book) in the next novel and I am definitely looking forward to seeing this worked into the main story line. My rating for this book would only be 4.5 stars if they gave out halfs. It’s too good to be 4, so I rated a 5. I don’t want to give too much away, but I was disappointed in the lack of disclosure of Lena’s angel nature in the book. To be fair, it’s strongly hinted that she will share this, but never shown (maybe I’ll be appeased next book, here’s hoping).
So, Lena is an angel in the Underworld (she’s mentioned briefly at the end of Fur and Feather’s by Aron, the angel of Death) doing her penance for the deeds she committed in life that kept her from going to Sojourn instead. After 23 years of service, the Unfortunate (ruler of the Underworld-dude has crimson wings, how cool is that?!) gives her a task that will send her to Earth. He sends her to Kieran and right into the middle of a conspiracy involving money laundering and a children’s charity. This story is about how the two of them work through that and of course, come to know one another.
I really enjoyed that Mrs. Schultz makes all of her angels so very human. They are all flawed and that makes them so very lovable. Lena of course has the most checkered past, but she is also the most determined to make amends so I have to side with Kieran and admit I liked her more for her strength in moving forward and not giving up. Kieran was just an all around great guy. I really liked that he was the one Lena was sent to.
All in all, it was a very sweet, short read that added yet more depth to the world. I look forward to the last novel!
This book was a great read and a great add to this series. Although all the books are part of a series they can also be read as stand-alone books. But back to this book wow what a great read it was I was hooked from the start and just kept on wanting to read the book to find out what was going to happen next. Loooking forward to reading more form this author.

Flame & Fortune (Angels of Sojourn) by Joynell Schultz is by General Fantasy, Cozy Mysteries. Paranormal Romance. Another good addition to the Angels of Sojourn Series. An enjoyable, well-written short read with a good, fast-paced storyline and good characters. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Read it months ago but I STILL remember every detail !! THAT is a big deal for me. I read a lot and THIS book still sticks out as one of my favorites!!
This was a wonderfully written book that was very touching. There are a few more tougher points touched lightly upon in the book, such as embezzlement, grief and child abuse, but Lena and Kieran’s relationship brings hope, forgiveness and love. I very much enjoyed reading this second chance romance and I really can’t wait to read more in the Angels of Sojourn world.
Flame & Fortune is a novella spin-off from the Angels of Sojourns series.

Lena thought that she was sent on a mission to tempt Kieran, and likely cause him harm or damnation.
Instead, she made choices to try to do the best things she could do with limited choices and resources.
She fears a cold and long lasting reprisal.
Will Lena and Kieran both be suffering, or is something else in store?
read on for another exciting Angels of Sojourn story of challenges, loves, wins and losses, with unexpected possibilities and punishments ahead.

Flame & Fortune – Another good addition to the Angels of Sojourn Series. Different from the other books in this series, this one is about embezzlement and second chances. She’s sent to earth to distract a human without knowing why. The story is fast paced, with good characters and dialog, and good storylines. There is emotion ranging from grief to happiness.
I’ve read this series out of order and never felt lost or had spoilers ruining the other books. I contacted the author to review her books. 4*
Angels of Sojourn Series:
Burnt & Broken – I had to read all the Angels of Sojourn books that I had. Ms. Schultz just has a way about her: her writing style; her realistic characters; her understated sexual tension between characters; and her infrequent use of vulgar language. This is a well written story complete with a well though out plot and believable dialog that moves at a fast pace. I appreciate that while the angels once were human, they don’t behave as humans; sex, vulgar language and all the other stupidity. Her angels behave as angels, even the “tainted” or fallen angels are good, they’re just in a gray area. Their mistakes were actually to help someone in need or pain. There is plenty of suspense and intrigue in this short story. 5*
Blood & Holy Water: Angels of Sojourn, Book One – I couldn’t put this book down without a fight. Another well written, well thought out story concerning an unusual vampire (I like what was done with this character) and a wingless angel. Enemies with the same goal, but different results gained, work together to solve the deaths of potential angels and murdered vampires, and the ties between the two groups. The characters are realistic and both have morals and ethics. The angel goes a little gray, but there’s so much involved in her decisions in trying to help the humans and potential angels. There’s intrigue and suspense, and the book moves at a fast pace. There’s sexual tension, but no sex – thank goodness this author treats angels as angels not sex starved humans without morals – and very infrequent vulgar language. 5*
Fangs & Fairy Dust – I enjoy Ms. Schultz’s stories, which I discovered in Hexes and Ohs, and was happy to find this collection. This is a well written and believable novella introducing the Angels of Sojourn Series, of which Blood & Holy Water is the first book. The main characters, a male vampire and a female human and her mother, are interesting and believable, along with action and dialog. It is fast paced and contains vivid descriptions making everything easy to visualize. Fortunately, it is not a cliffhanger. 4*
Angels of Sojourn Series end.
