Flame is the next Dark Kings book in New York Times bestselling author Donna Grant’s series. If she believed in destiny, she would believe they were meant for each other. But that fire was put out long ago. . . Living among the Dragon Kings, Cain has spent lifetimes learning to distrust both mortals and Fae. He is a warrior born–and every instinct demands that he fight to keep his own kind … instinct demands that he fight to keep his own kind safe. But when a fringe member of the Dark Fae contacts the Kings with an urgent warning, Cain is torn for the first time. How can he trust this beautiful creature when resisting his primal attraction to her is battle enough?
Noreen is horrified by what her kind and the malevolent Others are planning for the Dragon Kings. Dark Fae or not, there are lines she will not cross–even if it means risking her life. But she never imagined that she would risk her heart until she meets Cain. She wants him with a soul-deep desire that frightens her…and endangers them both. Is saying goodbye to everything Noreen has ever known worth a love that will span time and realms?

A steamy paranormal fantasy that can easily be read as a standalone novel. An addictive series that pulls you in keeping you second-guessing and just when you think you have it figured out the author yanks it all out of reach. The Dark Kings series will have you holding your breath as it takes you on an emotional roller coaster.
Moreann, the Empress of the Druids, planned to use Noreen, a Dark Fae, to deceive the Kings with a warning to help them be victorious. Can the Dark Fae be trusted? After all Moreann is determined to destroy them by springing a trap, but her plan doesn’t go as expected when Cain, a Dragon Warrior, and Noreen are drawn together. When Noreen’s deception is revealed, Cain is devastated. He trusted her. What will happen now? Can the Dragon Kings recover and defeat their deadly enemies? Flame is an action packed story. It’s filled with deception, treachery and heartbreak. Cain and Noreen together are powerful and passionate. As always the Dragon Kings and their mates keep my interest. There are so many unexpected twists. I couldn’t put this book down. I had to know what would happen next. The battle is still to come. I can’t wait. I know victory won’t come easy.
I received a copy of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed. My comments are my honest opinion.
When I said wow I truly meant that in all the big, positive and negative, stunned wow you could possibly mean. The sheer number of secrets and surprises was staggering. The changes in Rhi were also astounding, though those weren’t quite surprising since we’ve had book after book detailing her struggles. But when everything is combined, bombs are dropped, betrayal rocks the boat, and a confrontation with a monologuing villain, all the changes could mean something bad or something great is on the horizon and I’m not exactly sure how everything will play out in the last book.
Getting the Dragon King’s history in the way Noreen got it was utterly unique and the perspective both in the telling and in the knowledge gained was incredible and far more potent than any other retelling thus far. There were emotions felt, passed on, and experienced in a way that was unattainable before now because of the gift only Noreen possessed. So when Moreanne’s plan through Noreen was revealed it meant an incredible amount of pain and a betrayal we all saw coming yet hoped wouldn’t actually happen. Thank goodness for friends and allies they could count on to help them sort through that mess. There was a question of what was added to Moreanne’s spell that was unanswered and hopefully that will get resolved when Inferno comes out.
I will say that the monologuing villain was a bit too much, a bit too heavy-handed. While it did answer some questions as well as bring up even more, it was a slightly predictable scene that could have been finessed into something a bit less cliche. The one unpredictable bit was who showed up to perform the rescue. That was something I didn’t see coming.
There are so many times that the “cliffhanger” bits at the end of each story hint at more trouble or the next step, but the lead-in to Inferno was incredibly painful and huge. We’ve known from the first who would be the pair and I have both doubts and hopes for how their story will play out. For now though, one tumultuous relationship is enough and I’m glad for a tiny breather until we get the big battle, the redemption, the healing, the groveling, the passion, and the conclusion we’ve all been waiting for.
Really enjoyed this heart racing, action packed and emotionally thrilling adventure filled with dangerous and engaging carters, witty dialog, exciting twists and undeniable passion. Was a great reading from beginning to end and so hard to put down.
‘Flame’ is the seventeenth story in the ‘Dark Kings‘ series… and brings us even closer to the finale of this series. I frankly won’t know how to exist without another ‘Dark Kings‘ story, or connecting story to look forward to… maybe a tad bit overdramatic, but I will miss this world so very much – but that’s for another day, right now we have ‘Flame‘ to talk about.
… or not really talk about. ‘Flame‘ will reveal so much, answer many questions… and give rise to even more questions before we’re given those answers that have burned our reading souls for so long now. But not just yet. I won’t be revealing any of that here – no. You need to experience this adventure for yourself first hand. Most of what you’d want to know can be found in the cover description – but Cain and Noreen, they are simply amazing and you’ll get to know them, their motives, their hearts quite well before ‘Flame‘ concludes.
It always amazes me that just the right people are coupled together in this series. Even though Noreen was Dark Fae, she’s changed, she doesn’t believe as they do any longer, and she’s risking her very long life to try to warn the Dragon Kings of the treachery heading their way. To pair her with Cain, who hates anything remotely related to the Fae is a brave, and satisfying move. Watching them work through their preconceived ideas about each other, to battle not only the enemy but their own desires for each other was intriguing, sexy, and so worth every moment of lost sleep. This is a couple that belongs together, and it shows.
I’ve said I won’t talk much about this story and I won’t. I absolutely loved ‘Flame‘, it’s probably among my top five favorites from this series. Soon ‘Inferno‘ will be released and while I want to ‘know’ what happens… I don’t want to really let go of this world. I would highly recommend not only this story but the entire series (novellas included) to any reader no matter your preferred genre, but especially to Paranormal Romance or Fantasy readers. Buckle up, buttercup – it’s going to be quite a ride!
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher, St. Martin’s Press via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
So much happens between page 1 and page 407 that I can’t even. Donna Grant just kept dropping hints, leads, and bombs, I had whiplash. I started wondering if she was worried her readers were losing interest and needed to reel us back in or what, but Flame never lets up and never lets one down. I need a nap.
This book features the King of the Navies, Cain, and Noreen, a Dark Fae and Other who is switching sides. But that says little; what happens is further machinations with the Others in their preparations for war with the Kings. An alignment of powers on all sides occurs; Reapers, Rhi, and individual Fae on the side of Dark and Light all over–even some resurrected dead come in to play. Who will side with the Kings? Noreen never thought she would be someone who would, but she can’t let Moreann win. And she can’t let her King lose; he’s suffered enough already.
I almost can’t take the wait for Inferno.
But… that nap first.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary advance copy of this book.
This book was really good! I love me some shifter romance! The characters were great and the story was exciting and sexy. Lots of action and suspense. Love it!
4.5 Stars
The seventeenth book in the Dark Kings, Flame is a definite must read. A great enemy to lovers, Cain and Noreen are electric and well suited. The story is engaging and the support dynamic. I love this series and I know you will too.
This is one of my favorite books in the series at this time. There was everything in this one and a lot of questions answered. I can not wait for the next installment and to see where this goes. You are a phenomenal Ms Grant. Thank you so much for what you do

I need more…. can’t wait for more…
I’m a late-comer to this series, but I do love these Dark King stories. I can’t say that I’ve read all the books in this series, but from a paranormal romance perspective, I find that I just love the Dark Kings and what they stand for and the women that find them irresistable. I was intrigued by Constantine many books ago. Each book does bring us closer to the showdown between the Fae and the Dragon Kings.
Noreen warns the Dragon Kings that something bad is coming their way and Cain is sent to investigate. He is at first skeptical that Noreen is going against her clan, but eventually comes to believe her and understand just what she is risking by warning the Dragon Kings.
There is some insta-love going on here, which is part of the charm of this paranormal series, even though Noreen and Cain start out on opposite sides. I really like these books more for the romantic aspects but I’ve found the external conflicts between the Dragon Kings and The Others intriguing and I’ve gotten more interested in that part of the story as this series is in its last few books and that part of the story comes to a conclusion.
Overall, another good read in this paranormal series. There’s a good buildup to the conclusion happening in this story along with the romance between Noreen and Cain.
WOW!!! Where do I begin? This is Cain’s story, King of the navies. He is sent to investigate an email sent to Dregan, which leads him to Noreen. She is a dark fae and also a member of the Others. She is trying to give the Kings info, but nobody is convinced that she is legit. They run off to the fae realm that was destroyed in the wars to hide her from the Others and give in to that chemistry. Con is going through some stuff and causing all the Kings to worry about him. Ubitch is still around and Rhi is beyond mad. She is hanging on to the light for all she can, but the dark beckons her. Appearances by the Reapers and Death, also Rhi gets a huge surprise. This book was so good and the plot twists!! Can not wait for Con’s book….he is next!! Received ARC for review
Donna Grant has created a world of magic, with dragons, fae, druids, and more. Great world building, fascinating characters, and complicated romantic relationships keep her books worth going back to again and again.
I loved seeing so many characters come together in Flame; the Dragon Kings, the a few of the fae, Death and her Reapers, and The Order all play a part in this book. Plus, a character who was introduced in the last book reappears with hints of her purpose. I was also happy to see more of Rhi, a Light Fae with untold power and a strained relationship with Con, the King of the Dragon Kings. There is a feeling that many questions may be answered in the next book, while also being very satisfying with the progress in this book.
l received a copy of this book from Net Galley and this is my honest review.
Flame by Donna Grant is book 17 in the Dark Kings Series. This is the story of Noreen and Cain. I have read the previous book so that did add to my enjoyment of this one but I do feel you could make it a standalone book if you wish to do so. Cain is the chosen one to look into a possible informant who sent an email to them about The Others. The Dark Kings and the The Others are in a fight which opens this email up to danger but could be useful if not something else. Noreen is a Dark Fae and has been a part of The Others but now is doubting that choice. Noreen is the one that sent the email and when she meets Cain they both have mixed feelings toward each other. This was another exciting page turning read from this author!
Cain has learned not to trust many people after living with the Dragon Kings for centuries. Noreen is a dark fae but she is horrified when she finds out her people’s plans to destroy the dragon kings. Some lines were never meant to be crossed. The attraction between the couple is unexpected but strong and immediate. Will Cain be able to learn to trust? Can Noreen leave her people and everything she knows behind? A love that could cost the couple all they hold dear.
I received a copy of this book via Netgalley and St. Martin’s Paperbacks.
You are transported back into a magical world full of Dragons, Fae and Others. Donna weaves a believable description of these worlds and the beings who inhabit it. Heated passion will melt the pages and emotions will make you cry and fear for their lives. A beginning of how their world can come back to normal and how to rid the evil. Course facts are hard to come by and many things still make no sense.
Holy smokes!!! This story is filled with so much I don’t know where to begin.
First and foremost is Cain and Noreen. How these two become a match is crazy, to say the least. And are they going to get to stay a couple?
Well not if Moreann and the others have anything to say about it. Then we can an appearance by the elusive Rhi, and I am starting to see something here but I won’t say but I think I am figuring out who her King is…
And oh my heart was breaking at someone who visits with Rhi.
We have Reapers, Others, Kings, and oh yes Henry and Melisse what is up there?
Wowzers what a jammed packed action roller-coaster of emotions this book was.
I am so freaking happy I found this author. I can’t wait for the next book.
I was given this book from Donna Grant for an honest review.
This book like the others can standalone to a point. Donna Grant brings back some of the characters from others of her books, so if you have not read her other series you will need to read them first to understand some of it. But as usual she has done it again. Great story, great characters, action, romance and twists and turns and leaves you hanging in the end.
In this story as I said you meet characters from her other stories in the series and learn what happen to them after their book was finished. There are also characters from her other series (Reapers Series). There is a lot of interaction between characters and just when you think you figured something out another twist comes in to play. We are almost to the end of the series well at least this portion of the series and are close to finding out who Rhi’s Dragon King is. Which I cannot wait to find out. In this story you meet two characters, Noreen a Dark Fae and Cain a Dragon King. Noreen is determined to disclose the Other’s plan and meets Cain who wants to get information from her but also helps her but both have to learn to trust each other and in the process the attraction becomes obvious but can Cain learn to trust Noreen before it is too late or will he let the past betrayals destroy them?
Throughout the story there are many twists and turns and other things that will help to lead to the major battle to come. Just when you thought you would see the end coming there is another betrayal and sadly a return of an enemy plus you learn more bout the past and something happens to a leader. To find out all this you will have to read the story.
Donna Grant has done it again. She writes and great story and loves to keep you on your toes. Can not wait for the next installment ( Con’s Story).
Flame by is a paranormal romance Donna Grant. Ms. Grant has delivered a well-written book. The characters are fantastic but plentiful, you may want to read previous books to understand this book better. Noreen is a Dark Fae and firmly under the thumb of Moreann, Empress of the Druids, but she is determined to warn the Dragon Kings of Moreann’s plans. Cain is one of the Dragon Kings and it’s his job to find out what Noreen knows after she sent the Dragon Kings an email of warning. Noreen and Cain’s story is packed with drama, humor, sexy bits, action and suspense. I enjoyed reading Flame but now I need to go back and read the previous book to better appreciate this one. Flame is book 17 of the Dark Kings Series and can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Gah!! You have got to kidding me! My heart has been stripped bare and shredded by this incredibly monumentous story. This was not an easy story or a soft story or even a quiet story. This is a story overflowing with passionate emotions, soul deep revelations, and life alternating love. If you aren’t careful this story just may break you into tiny enough pieces that you won’t be able to put your heart back together again.
Noreen had one goal. Nothing could make her waver from that goal. Nothing except a little thing called love. She never saw it coming, never heard it’s impening footprints, and never imagined that it would ever touch her. What a surprise Fate had in store for her! Cain knows the weight of his past, and he carries it with him each and every day. He never even hoped for something to lighten his burden of that it was even possible. All he wanted to fight for his survival and the existence of his entire race. Could love be cruel enough to dangle when you never thought you ever wanted in front of you only to snatch it away once you recognize it for what it is? Can anyone survive a loss that devastating and still keep breathing and hoping?
I never imagined meeting a fascinating Far like Noreen. She is a marvelous character with such depth and creativity that I enjoyed getting to know her. Cain made things so much sweeter after these two met. While trust may come easily to some for others it can only exist after being tried and tested thoroughly. That is the painful journey these two amazing characters must face and battle through. They must stand strong and walk the dangerous path that Les before them.
I simply love the intensity and complexity that are a trademark Donna Grant masterpiece. I can never get enough, and I hunger for the next one as soon as I finish one. I am literally addicted to her masterful creativity and immense talent! I know you will be as well once you give her a chance to rock your world.
