Now a major motion picture starring Cole Sprouse and Haley Lu Richardson! Goodreads Choice Winner, Best Young Adult Fiction of 2019 In this #1 New York Times bestselling novel that’s perfect for fans of John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars, two teens fall in love with just one minor complication—they can’t get within a few feet of each other without risking their lives. Can you love someone you … without risking their lives.
Can you love someone you can never touch?
Stella Grant likes to be in control—even though her totally out of control lungs have sent her in and out of the hospital most of her life. At this point, what Stella needs to control most is keeping herself away from anyone or anything that might pass along an infection and jeopardize the possibility of a lung transplant. Six feet apart. No exceptions.
The only thing Will Newman wants to be in control of is getting out of this hospital. He couldn’t care less about his treatments, or a fancy new clinical drug trial. Soon, he’ll turn eighteen and then he’ll be able to unplug all these machines and actually go see the world, not just its hospitals.
Will’s exactly what Stella needs to stay away from. If he so much as breathes on Stella she could lose her spot on the transplant list. Either one of them could die. The only way to stay alive is to stay apart. But suddenly six feet doesn’t feel like safety. It feels like punishment.
What if they could steal back just a little bit of the space their broken lungs have stolen from them? Would five feet apart really be so dangerous if it stops their hearts from breaking too?

What an emotionally powerful and thought-provoking book! Yes, it’s a YA book, and yes it could be reminiscent of TFIOS, however there are some major differences. For one, there are a plethora of things I learned from this book that I didn’t know before about CF. For another, there are many themes throughout this book that are not necessarily addressed in other YA novels of it’s kind.
I liked the theme of survivor’s guilt woven through this book. There’s also the question of terminal illnesses and how they can affect different people so differently. Even if the illness is the same and the people are of the same age range. I can only imagine what these people have to go through knowing their time is limited and knowing they are going to have to leave behind the people they care about.
There is also the question of transplants and weighing the decision of whether a few years of extended life is worth the risks of the surgery itself, or having to say goodbye to things you might not be ready to say goodbye to.
Of course, under it all is a romance. I know it was a quick insta-love type YA situation, but in this case it was so totally believable because of the circumstances both teens were in.
In the end, yes, I bawled my eyes out, but I will still recommend this book 100%. It was heart-wrenchingly beautiful and I can’t wait to see if they did the book justice with the film adaptation.
Five Feet Apart was a heartbreakingly beautiful view into the lives of the unforgettable Will and Stella. Both Stella and Will grabbed my attention from the very start and held my heart in their hands until the last page. Their journeys were each unique but layered with so many eyeopenig and thought-provoking moments. I laughed, smiled, and admittedly bawled like a baby while reading Five Feet Apart and for me there’s nothing better than a book that makes me feel and this book definitely gave me all the feels.
You’ve seen the movie, now read the book. This book, like most books turned into movies, was soooo much better. I cried thru half of this book and loved it all. I know there isn’t a sequel but I wish there was.
The budding romance that gets cut short and the long time friendship, just has you wishing for more after the book ends. This is one of the best books I have read.
I highly recommend this book.
It was sort of a happily ever after… They didn’t end up together, but none of the lovers died… so I would call that a happily ever after.
Stella is really informative. She tells her Youtube subscribers about everything she goes through in the hospital.
This was an amazing book! I can’t wait to read another one of Rachael Lippincott’s books!
Five Feet Apart was a heartbreakingly beautiful view into the lives of the unforgettable characters. Both Stella and Will grabbed my attention from the very start and held my heart in their hands until the last page. I smiled, and I genuinely cried so much throughout the whole book and there’s nothing better than a book that makes me feel this rollercoaster of emotions and this book definitely gave me all the feels. It is by far the best book I’ve ever read. The description is incredible and it makes you part of the plot. The book is of a forbidden romance played by wonderful characters. Because the story is so real it definitely has you at the edge of your seat the whole time. I couldn’t put it down! The story is quiet tragic but I think what makes it so entertaining is that the author uses the love story and near deaths of the characters to keep people interested and you find yourself sitting there for half an hour and not wanting to stop reading because the books use of poetic devices really creates an amazing image of what is going on in the book . I would highly recommend the book if you are after a truthful, entertaining page-turner that you are guaranteed to get hooked on. I definitely recommend it for those who love teen romance books with a bit of tragedy.
I love this book a lot!!
I love this book so much that I want to read it million times again, but what I don’t understand is where did the boy go after the girl had the surgery??????????????????
I want you to read this book because if you didn’t will you miss your hall life when you finish reading it tell me what you think about it……….OK
Mikki Daughtry and Rachael Lippincott’s Five Feet Apart was by far one of the saddest books I have read. Usually I am not a fan of tragic books, however Five Feet Apart had so much depth and emotion that I found myself unable to put the book down.
I also found that I was easily connected to the characters. I was in love with Will’s character, laughing at his humor and crying along with his downfalls. Stella was a very inspirational character and gave real meaning to the phrase: “live life to the fullest”, she makes you really think about life and how short it really is.
This book is a wonderful example of a good tear-jerker romance that will take you on a rollercoaster of emotion. I was definitely crying on more than one occasion.
I recommend this book to people that love a book that will result in a good cry, and one that will lead to you getting lost in the plot. Five Feet Apart was definitely one of the best romance books I have gotten the privelege to read.
In don’t typically read YA but I knew I had to read this book before I saw the movie.
I liked how quickly I was able to read it and without much effort, making it a truly enjoyable free read.
I love Stella and her will to live.
I love Will and all that he gave Stella.
I wished for a happier ending but with a story like theirs I knew it couldn’t be picture perfect as we all would love.
This book is a true work of art and i will never forget how amazing it was and how much I sobbed my first time reading I can’t wait to see the film
A good look at what cystic fibrosis is like to live with, especially in this age of Covid when we have all become more aware of infection. A reminder that we all share the same feelings, hopes and dreams.
f I could give this book a higher book rating then I would. This is undoubtedly one of the best books that I have ever read. It is the unforgettable story of Stella and Will, who both have cystic fibrosis. Stella is on the list for a lung transplant and she likes to be in control of things around her, even if she is not in control of her body. Will, on the other hand, just wants to live his life. What neither of them expected was to fall in love, but the problem is, they are not allowed within six feet of each other.
Oh this book, is is simply brilliant. It will break your heart and leave you reaching for the tissues. This is an exceptional story with extraordinarily characters who I simply adored. This novel, this book, is truly great.
This book was beautiful, absolutely beautiful. I didn’t cry, I rarely cry while reading but I still loved it.
My main issue was that it romanticized a deadly disease, but that’s pretty much all.
It does switch narratives between Stella and Will, so be warned.
I loved the writing style, I found it extremely interesting.
This is such a crappy review I’m sorry
This is an absolutely amazing book!!I love the story. This fantastic has made my cry so much
When my daughter recently received this book as a birthday gift, I just had to borrow it. Needless to say, I devoured it in one sitting. The characters gripped me immediately and pulled me into their world. Their story was heartbreaking. It was hopeful. It was sad. It was beautiful. Yes, I ugly cried.
I have decided to read the book after seeing the movie and without a doubt, I am not at all disappointed! The entire action floats around a girl named Stella who has cystic fibrosis(which means that your body produces too much mucus) and a boy, Will, who has the same disease, but with the additional Burkholderia cepacia(B. cepacia). This bacterium is resistant to most antibiotics which destroy the chance of the infected to a lung transplant.
The main characters of the book are, of course, Stella and Will. Throughout the story, both of them learn what it means to love somebody deeply. The only thing that keeps them apart is the six feet. In order to survive(Will) and to have a chance to a lung transplant(Stella), they always have to keep the distance. To sum up the paragraph, the book shows their daily struggle with life, the disease and also the isolation that comes along(it is risky for the CFers to be near each other, so this makes the disease pretty lonely).
All the characters are complex and wonderfully made. Stella is the perfect way to describe control. She tries with every inch of herself to keep everyone happy and in control even if it means to take her own happiness away. She lives to take her meds, she doesn’t take them to live. Some people may say she has the survivor’s guilt. Will is the complete opposite; he doesn’t take his meds because he believes there is no salvation for him. He would do anything to take his mother off his shoulders and escape her endless tries to cure him. He wants to live every moment he has left and travel around the world. Poe is Stella’s oldest friend. They met on Stella’s first day at the hospital and remained friends ever since.
I think about that very last breath…sucking for air, pulling and pulling and getting nothing. I think about my chest muscles ripping and burning, absolutely useless. No air — no nothing, just black.
This book is also an alarming reminder of the life that the ones with chronic illnesses have to live. Even if the nurses are a bit too lax, and there were some stretches regarding CF, it still highlights and raises awareness among the readers.
It was quite easy to read, even for me, and I am not a native speaker. They didn’t use a lot of complicated words and I still improved my vocabulary. They used some words too many times, maybe to emphasize some ideas. I found it kinda annoying.
The movie followed the book exactly, except the ending(the one in the book was 10 times better). Even if I watched the movie before reading, I had the same emotional response as if I hadn’t. In addition, in the book, you can find some parts that in the movie do not exist(which sounds pretty good to me). It is also full of action and I just couldn’t bring myself to stop reading it. It always keeps you at the edge of your seat!
The story is uplifting, heartbreaking and funny all in one go. Overall Five Feet Apart is a beautifully written book about love, loss, and fighting for your own life. I strongly recommend it!
this i have no words it was just amazing
This book makes you travel in real sense through the lives of those who are struck within the four walls of the hospital and wish for a life which they could actually live .the story of Stella grant and will Newman will take you through their journey of sacrifice ,love and friendship and leave you with a smile and a tear ,wanting for more.
I absolutely loved this book. Five Feet Apart taught me that I should be grateful for my normal life. This book made me cry for both sadness and happiness.
Definitely full of teenage angst. Pretty good read.
