Now a major motion picture starring Cole Sprouse and Haley Lu Richardson! Goodreads Choice Winner, Best Young Adult Fiction of 2019 In this #1 New York Times bestselling novel that’s perfect for fans of John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars, two teens fall in love with just one minor complication—they can’t get within a few feet of each other without risking their lives. Can you love someone you … without risking their lives.
Can you love someone you can never touch?
Stella Grant likes to be in control—even though her totally out of control lungs have sent her in and out of the hospital most of her life. At this point, what Stella needs to control most is keeping herself away from anyone or anything that might pass along an infection and jeopardize the possibility of a lung transplant. Six feet apart. No exceptions.
The only thing Will Newman wants to be in control of is getting out of this hospital. He couldn’t care less about his treatments, or a fancy new clinical drug trial. Soon, he’ll turn eighteen and then he’ll be able to unplug all these machines and actually go see the world, not just its hospitals.
Will’s exactly what Stella needs to stay away from. If he so much as breathes on Stella she could lose her spot on the transplant list. Either one of them could die. The only way to stay alive is to stay apart. But suddenly six feet doesn’t feel like safety. It feels like punishment.
What if they could steal back just a little bit of the space their broken lungs have stolen from them? Would five feet apart really be so dangerous if it stops their hearts from breaking too?

Very well written and and interesting read.
I read this with a book club and I was itching to continue after each stopping point. I did not expect the ending. It was a wonderful, simple, easy to YA novel. Can’t wait to see the movie.
The story of young people with terminal disease. The tragedy of letting a chronic illness dictate your life. Good story.
Glad I waited to finish reading before I saw the movie. This book was so moving. A great read and eye-opener on people who suffer from CF. The story was beautifully written. I’m glad I didn’t listen to any critics about the movie either. I thought the movie followed the book to a T!!!! Loved this story 🙂
I really liked this coming of age book about two people falling in love and also realizing what it means to love someone unconditionally and wholeheartedly. It’s quite a tear-jerker but that’s just part of the process. The ending of the book was also quite unpredictable and also breaking the idea of every romance: that there’s always a happy ever after.
A quote I am feeling strongly opinionated about and which also describes the book perfectly: ” You know you’ve read a good book when you turn the last page and feel a little as if though you lost a friend.”
Five feet apart was a tear dropper. i would definitely recommend this book. when I started reading it pulled me right in and made me feel like i was inside Stella’s body. i was actually feeling how she felt. i loved how this book was a mix of funny, joyful, sad and romantic . this book was written so good i just could not put it down. again i would highly recommend this book.
My review is quite different because I am combining my reviews for both the film and the book, FIve Feet Apart by Rachael Lippincott. I don’t usually review movies, especially those based on books, but then I learned that the movie wrapped up about a week earlier than when the book was published. Yes, this masterpiece was finished almost at the same time and it made me wonder how interesting the characters could have had evolved for both medium. So I decided to watch the movie first, then read the book. And it was marvelous.
This book took my breath away, blew my mind, torn my lungs apart and broke my heart. I’ve watched Five Feet Apart, the movie, a week ago and it’s heavy, heartbreaking and heart-stopping.
The characters, Stella and Will both have terminal illnesses, Cystic Fibrosis and B. Cepacia, respectively and they weren’t allowed to touch or be near each other, for at least six feet. But Stella sacrificed that one foot for Will. I couldn’t really fathom how hard and difficult it must have been, not being able to touch or hug or kiss that someone whom you valued, cherished and loved the most. Just a simple touch, a smile and breath away, so near yet so far… Too hard, too dangerous, too fatal. Really heartbreaking.
The other character, Poe, was awesome and was my favorite and he made me cry so ugly. I couldn’t breathe literally. The way he dealt with his illness, the way he abandoned his feelings for people who wouldn’t be able to understand his sufferings, the way he lived his life – everything about him was charged with emotions. I couldn’t ever stop crying about his fate.
There are minor differences between the movie and the book, but the ending is quite not similar. While I enjoyed Cole Sprouse’s and Haley Lu Richardson’s performances in the movie, the book had a better and hopeful ending. So yeah, I agree with the overused phrase – the book is better than the movie. The author made sure that audience and readers would learn a lot about CF and the struggles and hardships and hopes that the characters and real people experience with this illness. To you, Rachael Lippincott, thank you. You are amazing. Here’s wishing for a sequel to both film and book series soon! Truly a #MustWatch and a #MustRead
Loved this book! As a nursing student, in Pittsburgh, I really enjoyed the CF aspect of it as well as the romance..I laughed and I cried. I also loved the movie! I made some of my friend go and see it and we all sobbed together!!!
Wasn’t crazy about the ending but it is a solid movie to novel adaptation.
To keep it short, the book really made me cry..
I Couldn’t Stop crying. it had me crying over sad stuff and heartwarming stuff. Highly recommend!!!!
It was the best book of all time it hade sad parts and happy parts and everything in between..
I love tear-jerking romance and this book has it in spades. It felt very Fault in our Stars meets Everything, Everything, but with an original take. I loved these characters so much. I listed to the audible version and loved the dual narration. A must read.

Love this book, it’s so well-written.
With every page you turn, you’ll love the characters a bit more.
When I finished it, a little part of me died..
I can’t wait to see the movie. It’s rare I feel that way about a book, but this one was so real. I know it is made more real due to my connection to Cystic Fibrosis. But it’s worth it for anyone to read. The message throughout the book is loud a clear. LIVE, LOVE, BREATHE!
From an accuracy stand point I will say it depicts CF very accurately. For any book/movie there has to be an amount of hand waving and alterations to recovery time & severity but I feel that this book handles those moments perfect. For people with CF your health can really change in a few hours, without warning, and be life and death. Staying healthy really is a fine balance of living and sanitizing.
I hope this book urges everyone to not take their life for granted, and to stay home when sick! Also to take a moment and research cystic fibrosis.
I find this book magnificent and a great book to read, I loved it a lot
