Kel will not allow this first test to be her last. Her adventure begins in the New York Times bestselling series from the fantasy author who is a legend herself: TAMORA PIERCE. Keladry of Mindelan is the first girl who dares to take advantage of a new rule in Tortall—one that allows females to train for knighthood. After years in the Yamani Islands, she knows that women can be warriors, and now … can be warriors, and now that she’s returned home, Kel is determined to achieve her goal. She believes she is ready for the traditional hazing and grueling schedule of a page. But standing in Kel’s way is Lord Wyldon. The training master is dead set against girls becoming knights. He says she must pass a one-year trial that no male page has ever had to endure. It’s just one more way to separate Kel from her fellow trainees. But she is not to be underestimated. She will fight to succeed, even when the test is unfair.
More timely than ever, the Protector of the Small series is Anti-Bullying 101 while also touching on issues of bravery, friendship, and dealing humanely with refugees against a backdrop of an action-packed fantasy adventure.
“Tamora Pierce’s books shaped me not only as a young writer but also as a young woman. She is a pillar, an icon, and an inspiration. Cracking open one of her marvelous novels always feels like coming home.”
—SARAH J. MAAS, #1 New York Times bestselling author
“Tamora Pierce didn’t just blaze a trail. Her heroines cut a swath through the fantasy world with wit, strength, and savvy. Her stories still lead the vanguard today. Pierce is the real lioness, and we’re all just running to keep pace.”

Follow a young woman as she strives to become a knight, great story
If Tamora Pierce is the mistress of anything, its creating heroines worthy of the girls that read her books. Though I haven’t wanted to be a knight-in-well-used-armor in a long time, Kel is a wonderful reminder that hard work and persistence turn dreams into goals. When Kel applies to be a knight of Tortall, her training master puts her on a …
I love the world of Tortall created by Tamora Peirce. Her characters are complex and their lives are woven together into a tapestry that is intriguing and satisfying. I love the strength, determination, and bravery of Kel. She is so relatable and the type of woman/young lady the main character that is often not described. There is power in a …
I want to start off by saying that I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. In return for honest review. I must say I really enjoyed this book. And I will be continuing the rest of the books in the series. I need to know what happens.

I’ve been a HUGE fan of Tamora Pierce since high school with the Lioness and I am happy to say The Protector of the Small Quartet did not disappoint even though I am 10 years older now.
This book first introduced me to the wonders of YA fantasy. I wouldn’t be where I am today without it.
Ilove all Tamora Pierce. I decided to reread this series (Protector of the Small – 4 books) this week. This is mid grad fiction with a female herp
I love just about everything Tamora Pierce has ever written, and The Protector of the Small is probably my favorite of her quartets (First Test being the first volume in that quartet). Strong female leads, lush fantasy world, and great action…a must-read!

She transports us on …
I don’t know if I can even write an unbiased review of a Tamora Pierce book. I’ve loved her forever. She has created a wonderful world that she keeps building on in new and interesting ways, and she manages to insert real world teenage/pre-teen problems into her plots that really make her characters relatable. Just read all her books!
Didn’t this have another title?
5 star. Wonderful series that I will admit to reading at least 3 times. One of my favorite author’s.
Have enjoyed this author for years always writes an excellent book. Keeps your attention throughout.
I loved Kel’s character and grit. She never let the obstacles she faced defeat her.
Tamora Pierce writes strong female characters. In this book, the heroine is a young girl who wants to be a knight. In the process, she fights against bullies and stands up for her classmates.
A great series for teens and older.
I love this series!
