A star quarterback and a feisty detective play for keeps in this sporty, sexy, sassy novel—a long-awaited new entry in the beloved, award-winning, New York Times bestselling author’s fan-favorite Chicago Stars football series.
Piper Dove is a woman with a dream—to become the best detective in the city of Chicago. First job? Trail former Chicago Stars quarterback, Cooper Graham. Problem? Graham’s … Graham. Problem? Graham’s spotted her, and he’s not happy.
Which is why a good detective needs to think on her feet. “The fact is . . . I’m your stalker. Not full-out barmy. Just . . . mildly unhinged.”
Piper soon finds herself working for Graham himself, although not as the bodyguard he refuses to admit he so desperately needs. Instead, he’s hired her to keep an eye on the employees at his exclusive new nightclub. But Coop’s life might be in danger, and Piper’s determined to protect him, whether he wants it or not. (Hint: Not!) If only she weren’t also dealing with a bevy of Middle Eastern princesses, a Pakistani servant girl yearning for freedom, a teenager who just wants of fit in, and an elderly neighbor demanding Piper find her very dead husband.
And then there’s Cooper Graham himself, a legendary sports hero who always gets what he wants—even if what he wants is a feisty detective hell bent on proving she’s as tough as he is.
From the bustling streets of Chicago to a windswept lighthouse on Lake Superior to the glistening waters of Biscayne Bay, two people who can’t stand to lose will test themselves and each other to discover what matters most.

WOW, I loved it.
Great characters & well written. Strong, witty, emotional challenged h and a sweet, sexy, athletic H. I loved them both and could relate to their characters. Then the way the two of them rubbed each other wrong and battered made me laugh more than once. I cannot wait to read more from Susan Elizabeth Phillips.
Another delightful book from author Susan Elizabeth Phillips. It has been a while since I read the last of the Chicago Stars books, so this was more like a stand alone. Former quarterback Cooper Graham has retired and has decided to build a series of night clubs and is looking for investors. However, he starts noticing a quirking looking woman everywhere he goes. He finally confronts her, and she claims that she is a harmless stalker off her meds. She is however, Piper Dove, PD, trying to rebuild her father’s detective agency after he dies and leaves everything to her step mother. When he realizes what she is and has the integrity not to reveal who hired her, he hires her himself. And the dance between them begins. She annoys him, but he also is fascinated with her. She is so attracted to him, but believes that she is out of his league. Not only are the leads appealing, but there are so many other endearing characters too. And of course there are a few villains. A very entertaining read.
Phillips is always a great read.
Read this a while back but all of Susan Elizabeth Phillips books are well worth the read. I like the twist and turns in this novel. Promise you’ll laugh.
Not as good as others by this author, who I love. But still more entertaining than a lot of other books out there.
Love all of her books…her characters are always quirky and entertaining!!!
This is another good story from Susan Elizabeth Phillips. Cooper Graham is a genial football star, while Piper Dove is another quirky Phillips heroine. She does a great job of developing a sophisticated, well characterized story, on the way to their HEA. My only caveat is that this felt a little rushed and short, and not as rich as Phillips’ best work, so it get four stars instead of five.
I love the author,
Really a good read! One of her best.
This is the first book I have read by Mrs. Phillips and it will not be the last. I loved the mystery, romance, bickering, butt-kicking, and humor that had me laughing out loud. Piper’s dad brought her up showing no emotion and the ability to take care of herself. When Piper’s investigation company is asked to help with protecting Cooper Graham, a local retired football hero, all sensibilities go out the window with one exception – falling in love. Great book! Will be going back and start from the beginning of the series to catch up.
SEP is an automatic buy and read for me. I’ve read all her novels, she hasn’t disappointed.
I’ve read all of S E Phillips books, and this one is better than some of her others. Great female lead (although not much of a detective) and a good male lead. I liked it enough to re-read it.This book is missing those wonderful side romances between age 50 something side characters that the author usually includes. I look forward to those stories and was surprised she didn’t include one this time. Overall, a fun, romantic read.
I love a good SEP book for a quick fun read. Sure she is follows a formula (famous pro athlete meets quirky oddly talented girl and dislike turns to romance) but I’ve read and enjoyed them all.
Loved it
Enjoyed reading this book. I would have liked knowing there was some violence in it though.
