A star quarterback and a feisty detective play for keeps in this sporty, sexy, sassy novel—a long-awaited new entry in the beloved, award-winning, New York Times bestselling author’s fan-favorite Chicago Stars football series.
Piper Dove is a woman with a dream—to become the best detective in the city of Chicago. First job? Trail former Chicago Stars quarterback, Cooper Graham. Problem? Graham’s … Graham. Problem? Graham’s spotted her, and he’s not happy.
Which is why a good detective needs to think on her feet. “The fact is . . . I’m your stalker. Not full-out barmy. Just . . . mildly unhinged.”
Piper soon finds herself working for Graham himself, although not as the bodyguard he refuses to admit he so desperately needs. Instead, he’s hired her to keep an eye on the employees at his exclusive new nightclub. But Coop’s life might be in danger, and Piper’s determined to protect him, whether he wants it or not. (Hint: Not!) If only she weren’t also dealing with a bevy of Middle Eastern princesses, a Pakistani servant girl yearning for freedom, a teenager who just wants of fit in, and an elderly neighbor demanding Piper find her very dead husband.
And then there’s Cooper Graham himself, a legendary sports hero who always gets what he wants—even if what he wants is a feisty detective hell bent on proving she’s as tough as he is.
From the bustling streets of Chicago to a windswept lighthouse on Lake Superior to the glistening waters of Biscayne Bay, two people who can’t stand to lose will test themselves and each other to discover what matters most.

One of her best works, loved it.

SEP never disappoints! Her books are always fabulous. I’m especially fond of the Stars series, and how she works the characters we came to know and love into later stories.
I’m still reading First Star I See Tonight, trying to make it last! The book is coming together so wonderfully. Classic Susan Elizabeth Phillips packed with wit and charm and a sexy, earthy hero pitted against a gutsy heroine who’s not afraid to let her quirky side roam free! Loving it!
I love all of Susan Elizabeth Phillips books, but especially her Chicago Stars Series
Totally enjoyed it.
Great fun
It was not her best.
Fun reads sexy
Phillips never disappoints. From the opening to the ending, this was a totally enjoyable read. Loved the characters – Piper is my hero; she had Cooper doing her bidding right and left. I’ll read this again and again, when I need a good laugh.
4.5*****
I loved this book! It has become one of my all-time favorites.
Piper and Cooper are terrific characters. Their wit, sarcasm and their rapid fire volley of words are entertaining and draws you in to their relationship.
Piper Dove’s strength and her insecurities made me want to hug her. Her father does a number on her growing up. His grief over his wife’s death is misplaced in his parenting of Piper. She’s taught to never show emotion, to be ethical and to win. She acquires her father’s private investigator business, which she is determined to make a success.
Cooper Graham is the retired football star who left when he was on top of his game. Now he is looking for his next big challenge. Spiral is a premium nightclub that Cooper owns. He is starting to get a bit bored with it so he decides to go bigger and franchise. And, he always gets what he wants.
However, through a series of unfortunate events, Piper becomes Cooper’s club bouncer and bodyguard. It becomes clear that Cooper is a target and someone is out to harm him. Piper’s loyalty knows no bounds and her trust in Cooper excels to the point where he grows to admire and respect her. That is not something he had planned on happening.
It gets tricky when Piper slowly gets into Cooper’s heart. He doesn’t know how to handle that information. Piper, on the other hand, runs scared when she realizes that she has fallen head over heels for Cooper.
Cooper finds a way to get through to Piper and give him the conversation that she neglected to give him when she walked away. He gives her the words she has longed to hear but, now she needs to face her fears and meet Cooper challenge.
Fun read! I adore her books, this one is no exception!
Just like all her others. Not original
I thoroughly enjoyed this return to the Chicago Stars universe. These are some of my favorite SEP books, and this one doesn’t disappoint. Fun, quirky H/H who really are made for each other even if they don’t realize it right away and then fight the attraction for character-driven reasons. Clever and timely subplots and a lot of fun.
I always enjoy Susan’s books.
This book was freaking awesome.
It was cute and funny and a great change of pace. One of the things I loved most was how much Piper wanted to protect Cooper which Cooper wanted to protect her and keep her from protecting him.
I wasn’t crazy about how events toward the end played out…I wish that Cooper had gone about things differently, but I’m not even sure what that would have been so….
Anyway, this book was awesome and I’d totally recommend it!
Excellent as usual. I think I have read all her books and just keep waiting for the next one. It is like returning to a group of old friends as the characters keep popping in and out of most of her books and evolve. However stressful the day, reading her books leaves me happy from laughing, and calm from the HEA even if it was convoluted in some plots ( that just adds to the fun on an unexpected detour ).
She is a great author. I have read all her books. Love her!!! Wish she would write more.
Have loved books by this author. This one was just ok, and not up to the standard set by her earlier books.
I really enjoyed this book – great characters, great story line, no quibbles about any of it. Love my SEP books!
