A star quarterback and a feisty detective play for keeps in this sporty, sexy, sassy novel—a long-awaited new entry in the beloved, award-winning, New York Times bestselling author’s fan-favorite Chicago Stars football series.
Piper Dove is a woman with a dream—to become the best detective in the city of Chicago. First job? Trail former Chicago Stars quarterback, Cooper Graham. Problem? Graham’s … Graham. Problem? Graham’s spotted her, and he’s not happy.
Which is why a good detective needs to think on her feet. “The fact is . . . I’m your stalker. Not full-out barmy. Just . . . mildly unhinged.”
Piper soon finds herself working for Graham himself, although not as the bodyguard he refuses to admit he so desperately needs. Instead, he’s hired her to keep an eye on the employees at his exclusive new nightclub. But Coop’s life might be in danger, and Piper’s determined to protect him, whether he wants it or not. (Hint: Not!) If only she weren’t also dealing with a bevy of Middle Eastern princesses, a Pakistani servant girl yearning for freedom, a teenager who just wants of fit in, and an elderly neighbor demanding Piper find her very dead husband.
And then there’s Cooper Graham himself, a legendary sports hero who always gets what he wants—even if what he wants is a feisty detective hell bent on proving she’s as tough as he is.
From the bustling streets of Chicago to a windswept lighthouse on Lake Superior to the glistening waters of Biscayne Bay, two people who can’t stand to lose will test themselves and each other to discover what matters most.

I’m not sure of the first SEP novel I read, but I think it was Match Me If You Can when I plucked if off the library sale shelf for 50c. That was probably around 12 years ago, and since then I’ve collected all her books.
If you read contemporary romance, you’re probably familiar with Susan Elizabeth Phillips — she consistently tops Best Of lists and excels at creating sympathetic characters readers easily relate to.
One of the things I love is how SEP creates women who have careers and goals entirely separate from their love stories. Piper Dove is a PI who keeps getting tangled up in social issues. She’s different from some of the more familiar SEP heroines, who have been authors and travelers and matchmakers and actors — Piper’s notably less interested in appearance and romance — but she still has the quirky attitude and entertaining thought process that makes these books so much fun to read.
For a little more about plot and my thoughts, here’s a piece on the BookBub blog: https://media.bookbub.com/blog/2016/08/23/susan-elizabeth-phillips-last-star-i-see-tonight-review/
Another wonderful, funny read by Susan Elizabeth Phillips. If you are looking for a entertaining, laugh-out-loud read, this book is for you. I always look forward to Ms. Phillips books.
First Star I See Tonight is the eighth installment in the fabulous Susan Elizabeth Phillips’s adult contemporary/sports romance series titled Chicago Stars. I thought this series was finished so I was super excited to hear Ms. Phillips’ announcement that an additional book was being added to the collection. It was fun and sexy, just like I expected. However, I wasn’t expecting a mystery component! …but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I absolutely loved that the heroine was a trained bodyguard. Kickass women are my favorite! When it comes to this series, every book is a winner so do yourself a favor and stop reading reviews and just start the series! You’ll be a SEP fan in no time
I like all of her books that I’ve read so far. The characters are always sarcastic and funny. It’s a different twist on a typical romance.
Can’t go wrong with Phillips.
If you can’t tell by now, my favorite books are those with excellent dialogue that keeps a hero on his feet. He has to be sharp enough and astute enough to see though to the the soul of his heroine. Of course, Susan Elizabeth is a master of that very thing. Which is why I reread everything she has ever written. This book take a smart-ass heroine and makes her the body guard! You won’t be disappointed.
Susan Elizabeth Phillips has been a favorite of mine for a long time. Her books always have a great plot and she includes humor.
If you are needing a good beach read or just a happily ever after book, look no further. This book has it all: romance, mystery, a retired and handsome pro football player, a down on her luck PI, and many great characters. Well written and easy to read, this book was the perfect “pick me up” in between books with heavy topics. I am a fan of Susan Elizabeth Phillips and am glad this book made its way into my reading queue.
Great author
I really liked this book. The characters are well-developed and the plot keeps you hook. I laughed out loud through the first half of the book, but the last half became serious and a bit of a mystery.
I love this series. Every book is a great read.
It made me laugh
You can never go wrong with a Susan Elizabeth Phillips book. I loved this one.
Can always count on her books being so well written and enjoyable to read
One of my all time favorite authors. Her stories never disappoint!
Again, Ms Phillips has tickled my funny bone with her off the wall characters & plot lines. I love all her books & especially the women of her sports world.
Susan Elizabeth Phillips always delivers!
Very good
Another in the Chicago Stars series and just as entertaining as the ones before. I would give almost all of her book 5 stars and the few I wouldn’t would be 4 stars. The characters have problems but interact normally and sort out the worst of them as the relationship evolves.
I’m a huge SEP fan, so imagine my joy to find one I hadn’t read, and in the Chicago Stars world as well – BONUS! It has all that makes a SEP read special – funny, great dialogue, laugh out loud moment and a slow, steamy burn.
