I wanted her—even if she was a mortal and I was a nothing shifter.I’d have one drink and be gone.At least that’s what I told myself—but I didn’t expect Lisa to walk through the door. She was a blonde vision and I was a fool to think it could work. I loved Lisa the best way I knew how. I could have done without lying to her, pretending to be a cop.But she couldn’t know the truth about me.And I had … she couldn’t know the truth about me.
And I had suspicions of my own.
Especially when Lisa announced her pregnancy.
Then Lisa did the unthinkable and a new rage took hold.
I found a new love, my mate, the curvy and alluring Stella, a true shifter.
With her guidance, I will take what is rightfully ours…
Even if it means hurting my daughter to get it.
Author’s Note: This book is a stand alone with a HEA and is intended for 18 and over.

First Shift is a prequel of Bears in Blue series and the first story I’ve read by Mia Taylor. This is Paul’s side of the story of the lies and secrets he started telling Lisa when they first meet and throughout their relationship. The characters and the storyline was well written, there’s obsession, betrayal, mystery and a twist I didn’t see coming. This book didn’t do it for me, but I will try the next book to see what happens with Melissa and Elisabeth.

Great Beginning Story! This is a much-needed prequel to Mia Taylor’s Bears in Blue series. It will give you the setting and background for the other books in the series. I personally enjoyed reading this short prequel as well as the first two books in the series. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Driving down to Boulder after a jewelry heist, Paul Stark decided to stop at a bar for one drink. The bartender looked familiar, but he couldn’t place her. When he wanted to start a tab, all her friendliness was gone. She told him he had nerve to even ask after “last time”! But he didn’t remember being here before, unless he had been in a drunken stupor and forgotten everything. She also implied that she knew he was a shifter. As he sat there, the door opened and a beautiful woman walked in. The bartender greeted her as Elisabeth, but when Paul bought her a drink, she told him her name was Lisa Landry rather than what Candace called her. He got up and sat at a table as Candace’s hostility rose. To his surprise, Lisa followed him and sat down. She asked him what he did for a living, and him hesitate and became distrustful – so he told her she had to keep it secret or his life would be in danger. He was an undercover cop! He figured it was okay to lie because it seemed to make her happy.
At the wedding reception 2-1/2 years later, Bailey was furious with Paul for marrying a mortal who didn’t even know he was not a cop! Their leader, Rand Simon, also was angry that Paul hadn’t cleared it with him first. He had to tell Rand he wanted out – but he knew that would never happen.
Two years later, Paul was speechless as Lisa told him she was pregnant. Rand was going to kill him for this! Rand had told him if he messed up, he would arrest him and Lisa would learn the truth. Rand was an actual decorated police Sergeant with a flawless record, and he had Paul right under his thumb. When Paul realized Lisa should not be able to get pregnant — unless she was also a shifter, carried the gene, or it was someone else’s child — Lisa saw his expression become hard. Could he somehow swab her mouth for a test without her noticing? Hah!
Melissa Genevieve Stark was born, looking exactly like her mom. Paul never had the test done, so he still didn’t know if she was his daughter. One day, Lisa acted kind of strange at breakfast. Paul drove to Bailey’s house to talk to Bailey’s sister, Stella. This day, Stella told him she did a favor for him – she showed a video to Lisa of Paul shifting into a bear! Paul raced home, but Lisa and the baby were gone. He didn’t even know where to begin searching! Would he ever find them?
This short prequel is written to give the reader some background for the other Bears in Blue stories that have already come out. Each chapter jumps through a time period of a few years as we learn why Lisa ran and how Paul reacts. Although the characters aren’t necessarily “good guys”, the reader may feel some compassion for their situations; and this background story is very helpful in filling in a few gaps. Grab your copy and catch up on their story. It’s a quick read but important information the reader should have.
This is where it all started.
And this book reveals just how far a bear will go for his Sleuth.
There are shady characters and then theres Stella – I hope we’ll find out just how shady she is in books to come.
But if you wanted an easy and quick explanation of the Bears in Blue characters then you’re plumb out of luck. A series that’s promising to be this good isn’t gonna be easy to explain
This is a great short story about Paul’s journey. He takes orders and follows directions but his sleuth leader. But he makes one exception… his love life. His life and circumstances have lies of ups and downs and twists, what can he do to change his life’s trajectory and get to make decisions. Great story with suspenseful moments and events that keep you hooked.

Although I have already read the first 2 books of Bears in Blue – and liked them – I have some trouble with the prequel. It answers a few questions, but I find the style of jumping through the years a little hard to follow, and the main characters are anything but lovable – more like the anti-heroes. Although it was a short read, I honestly did not enjoy the book except for the explanations it gave me why things were the way they were in the first book.

This is a great start to a series. It gives you background on the rest of the series. I can’t wait for more. I received this book as a FREE ARC copy to read and I voluntarily leave this review.
This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW. First Shift by Mia Taylor is the Prequel to the Bears in Blue series. Do you know how sometimes you want more backstory, well wish granted. The glimpse this book affords you into the events leading to Melissa’s birth really make the rest of the series pieces snap smartly into place. This really quick read gives you a few more things to think about when reading the rest of the Bears in Blue series. Mature Readers Please!

First Shift is the Prequel to the Bears in Blue series. It begins with Paul’s growing obsession with Elisabeth. However, he is so entrenched with lies, it drives a wedge straight through any chance of a real relationship. I can honestly recommend reading this entire series, beginning with First Shift.

This book does end with a cliffhanger. Paul marries Lisa. Lisa gives birth to Melissa. It’s unknown who fathered Melissa. Good book, full of mystery.

This was an interesting introduction to this new shifter series. I am intrigued by the series but I was not really a fan of Paul’s. I did like Lisa though and overall this short read was enjoyable.
this book has some dark parts so it would be best for young adults. story line is good and is a good back story for the next book

Paul is a low end criminal and a bear shifter. He meets Lisa and is knocked off his feet. She finds him charming and fresh. They marry but Paul hides his duel nature from her. They have a daughter and he wonders if she may not be his child because Lisa isn’t a bear too. But the changes coming down on Paul and Lisa are big, and will affect them for many years to come.
