In the final novel in #1 New York Times bestselling author Jim Butcher’s acclaimed Codex Alera series, the people of Alera—who use their unique bond with the elementals of earth, air, fire, water, wood, and metal for protection—must face the ultimate conflict… and confronting the corruption within his own land, he became a legendary man of war and leader of men—and the rightful First Lord of Alera.
Now, the end of all he fought for is close at hand. The brutal, dreaded Vord are on the march, using fear and chaos to turn the Alerans against one another, and forcing those who will not submit to flee to the outer reaches of the realm.
Perhaps for the final time, Gaius Octavian and his legions must stand against the enemies of his people. And it will take all his intelligence, ingenuity, and furycraft to save their world from eternal darkness…

A great conclusion to a great story! The entire series was phenomenal.
I was never a fan of Fantasy, but this series changed my mind. I have read it through three times over the past 10 years and have enjoyed every reading just as much as the first. Though there are spirit-like creatures and magic-like control of them, Butcher presents it as if it is normal without the all-too-common over-the-top flair and gusto of many fantasy authors. The character development is very strong, even in the secondary characters. The setting is interesting and well described, but just close enough to reality to allow you to enjoy the story rather than spend so much energy trying to visualize and make sense of the fantasy world. The characters have depth – Tavi (the main character) is not a perfect hero who rushes in to save the day. He is saved more often than he helps other people. The female characters are as powerful as the males and play as strong a role in the story line. Relationships between the characters evolve through time and not in the “I hate you, now you’re my soulmate” way – their relationships change as they share experiences, grow, and mature. The plot is well developed and complex. Though there are some predictable plot arcs, even those are made interesting by the complexities of the subplots and the twists in the stories. The books need to be read in order, but at the end of each book, you feel a sense of closure (though still excited to read the next). I highly recommend this whole series!
It has been less than five years since the events in “Furies of Calderon”. Tavi has grown a LOT in that time – grown a lot, become more than he ever envisioned becoming, taking on more responsibility than he ever expected. The good news is that unlike his predecessor, he is not doing this all by himself; Tavi knows and understands the value and importance of family and friends and they will NOT allow him to be alone. This is the final book in the Codex Alera but it is clear that for Tavi, the ending of the Vord War is only the beginning. He has an empire to rebuild, allies to assist and another continent to conquer. I have to wonder – how much of that is he going to leave to his descendants? Is there any chance that the author will continue the chronicles? I hope so, because I really want to know!
Read the entire Codex Alera series.
If Jim Butcher wrote it it is good. He creates a detailed world with interesting and engaging characters. I find myself rooting for the main character and all the supporting characters.
Edge of seat action, out standing protagonist, interesting interaction with elementals.
This final book of the Alera Codex, it is unbelievably fantastic for a closing series book, I have read this series 4 times and never ever tire of reading it, Jim Butcher again at his best.
Last book in series was already hooked on any books by Butcher. Especially like Dresden novels.
Good finish to the series. Definetly don’t start with this one though.
