The Terran survey ship Aurora makes a startling discovery in an uncharted star system: two planets inhabited by an advanced, and decidedly unfriendly, non-human civilization. Disabled by gigantic alien warships before it can escape, the Aurora is boarded by nightmarish blue-skinned warriors with claws and fangs who slaughter the crew in ritual combat using primitive weapons. The sole survivor, … Midshipman Ichiro Sato, is returned to Earth as a messenger bearing a device that warns of an impending attack.
For that is the way of the Kreelan Empire, which has waged war against countless civilizations across the stars in its quest for a savior, one not of their own blood, foretold in an ages-old prophecy. With only a few generations left before their ancient species faces extinction, the Kreelans will wage their last war against humanity, hoping against hope for redemption of sins long past.

I really enjoyed this book because it’s the first time in a long time that the story has been so shocking and compelling that it grabbed me and wouldn’t let go. I read this type of military science fiction a lot and have read many good stories, but this one was one of my very favorite reads.
I don’t want to ruin the shock and surprise of this …
If you are into military scifi, then this is your book. It is basically military scifi with interesting characters thrown in to keep you reading.
I like science fiction, and within a chapter or two I was hooked. Hicks has developed a truly immersive universe which makes you want to read more in the series, which I have. Try it, you’re like it.
This is one of the best Sci fi books I’ve ever read, and the beginning of an awesome series of books!
This was good book for understanding differentiating aspects of the stubbornness of mankind. The author uses some aspects to show courage, another aspect to show selfish pride an another to show corroboration. The odds for the main characters successes were always stacked against them. A good story and action packed conflicts against a far …
What a fantastic story and new take on alien invasions/intergalactic battles. Not only are all the characters well-written and believable, but the author’s knowledge of military tactics obviously shines through in his writing. The story itself feels massive and appropriately encompasses just how in-depth and disruptive an alien invasion of this …
Thank the powers that be for ethical enemies. The book grabs you and doesn’t let go.
Sticks tight to the genre, and the bad guys are well invented. Real aliens. Action packed story.
A different point of view action packed with different characters.
I thoroughly enjoyed the book.
Good Sci-Fi book.
Was hooked after first few pages read the entire series one after the other.
I have read all the books in the series. This book is not the best, but sets the stage for the rest of the series.. I gets more interesting as the story and characters develop.
Wonderful characters and a page truner. Very well written story with mostly unexpected turn of events. Human kind is on edge of being wiped out by a far advanced species. Fight to the death struggles.
Defeat after defeat, almost everyone is killed, just enough left so they can be defeated again. Maybe there is a chance to loose more in the following books but, I think I’ll phase shift out of this one.
It was fun if a bit ridiculous. The idea of an advanced civilization (bound by honor) lowering their level of weaponry to fight humans is interesting and different. Still, a bit ridiculous.
Loved this! I couldn’t put it down. Totally original aliens who have their own agenda.
Interesting but not very
A first contact story with predictable results. Man makes contact with a all female race and gets there butt kicked.
They make contact with a race that enjoys combat. There is only one survivor. Mankind gets one years warning and then they attack. Read the book for the details its a good story.
It left me with a need for more – both in this series, and from this author in general.
great read
