Stephen King’s “gem of a story” (Chicago Tribune) about a child with extraordinary psychic powers who is on the run from the government. A #1 national bestseller. Andy McGee and Vicky Tomlinson participated in a drug experiment run by a veiled government agency known as The Shop. One year later, they marry. Two years later, their little girl, Charlie, sets her teddy bear on fire by simply … fire by simply staring at it.
Now that Charlie is eight, she doesn’t start fires anymore. Her parents have taught her to control her pyrokinesis, the ability to set anything—toys, clothes, even people—aflame. But The Shop knows about and wants this pigtailed “ultimate weapon.” Shop agents set out to hunt down Charlie and her father in a ruthless chase that traverses the streets of New York and the backwoods of Vermont.
“Terrifying and gripping” (The Miami Herald) Firestarter is chilling proof that “Stephen King is superb” (Time).

This has to be my favorite book by King. I fell in love with the movie as a kid, then read the book when I got older. Of course, the book was much better. My heart broke for Charlie, the way The Shop used her family, and the way they tried to use her. She’s one bad ass little girl. While King has many great novels that I love, there’s just something about this story that tugs at me. I just remember as a kid, I wanted to be Charlie. Instead, I grew up and began writing about my own pyrokinetic character. For anyone who hasn’t read this book, it’s a must.
One of Kings classics. Takes you right in and does not let go until you are breathless and spent.
Interesting
It’s an amazing novel. It’s about being different. Growing with the characters is fantastic.
Always love Stephen King’s stories
I loved this book so much as a kid that I wanted to name my daughter Charlie. This is one of my all time favorites.
I bought this book at a garage sale for 50 cents when I was in junior high. It hooked me onto Stephen King. Because of this book, I am always very careful where my hands are when I run the garbage disposal.
Fantastic page turner.
Great book. I did not want to put it down. The father and daughter were caught in a web with horrible people trying to capture them.
It’s been many years since I’ve read this but I still remember it.
This was my first Stephen King book and is what made love Stephen King, my Dad recommended it to me and I love it so much. Some gory scenes and so perfect for horror lovers like myself. Do not watch the movie though, it is not very good.
I read this book a long time ago, It is a traditional Steven King scary book, I have real almost all of his books, I am looking for ward the reading his newest 2.
Steven King at his best, easier to read than The Stand or The Dead Zone but just as good.
This is an oldie but goodie. Very old-school Stephen King, when his writing was pure and not centered on pushing out books just for the sake of doing so. Well laid out plot.
A must read classic!
Lots of action!
I loved this book very much. I may have loved it less than the others I already read, but the very idea made me think far beyond the boundaries of the plot itself and continued the scheme inside me even after the end of the reading.
This book was fast paced and fascinating from beginning to end!
Engrossing. went through it in one day. Couldn’t put it down.
I’m a big fan of Stephen King, but his earlier work – this book in particular – is my favorite. Incredibly suspenseful and intriguing, but more believable/realistic than his later work. His character-building is exceptional in all cases and I feel this story is a shining example.
