Loved this read. Didn’t really know much history in this place but great story set in time.
interesting topic
I enjoyed this fantasy mixed with history. It was well written, the characters were different and fun. I love anything about ancient Egypt and the multiple religions.
This book is about the fire in The library in Alexadria, and trying to find out who started it supposedly. But then it goes into a different direction, with an alternative ending on the history of Alexandria. If you enjoy historical fiction that changes the history of a place an time, then I highly recommend that you read this book.
I enjoyed enjoyed this book. It’s partially a mystery story, partially a historical fiction story, and partially a story of the personal growth of the main character. The only thing I didn’t care for was the author dragging in the tired trope of the supposed conflict between science and religion. However, this theme was mainly in the background …
Since I enjoy a book with some historical content I liked this one as well.
4.5 stars: Well I certainly learnt a lot! This time period is not one I am overly familiar with and whilst I’ve been to Alexandria, I didn’t have any idea of the fractious relationship they had with the Romans. I was delighted to read the authors note explaining about Heron and our knowledge of his inventions.
The only thing stopping me from …
The reader is given great details and unusual insight into the history of Alexandria. Agog, the man from the north, and Heron, the inventor are brought together to accomplish engineering feats. Ruthless Roman officials, dark secrets, and government intrigue are all part of this interesting story.
Too slow in establishing the background. I could not get into it and quit reading about a quarter of the way through.
didn’t hold my interest
I enjoyed it.
Within the first two sentences it is clear that the author wrote this novel with his elbows–somebody get him an editor!
Loved it!
The characters were well drawn. The historical era interested me, and the author featured strong women and also some good men.
A interesting rewriting of history. Interesting characters and a great read.
Heron of Alexandria was a real person, and a genius at that, inventing automata and war machines and using steam power far ahead of the industrial revolution. Why the author felt compelled to make him a female posing as a male is beyond me. He was fascinating enough in his own right. There was a pretty teenage girl (ostensibly Heron’s niece) who …
The book gave a different historical outlook on libraries and the culture of ancient Egypt. It was an enjoyable read and I would recommend it to others.
It was very… wordy. All in all a very good book tho.
I personally couldn’t recommend it
I couldn’t get into the characters due to the language used , it was to difficult.
Tried it twice than gave it up.
The ending was very weak.
