Modern medicine can replace worn, defective hearts, but only love can heal a broken one… eight-year-old, Molly, to have a normal summer experience for the first time. Within reason, of course.
Molly knows her dad worries about her all the time. She worries about him, too. What he needs is someone else to think about. Someone else to be there for him, just in case her transplanted heart goes bad.
Take a determined eight-year-old matchmaker, add moonlight, fireflies, and heartfelt wishes, and odds are a summer romance is in the making.
But summer always ends, fireflies fade, and Rachel’s already lost one child. How can she give her barely-patched-together heart to this man and his medically-fragile daughter?

Rachel Thompson is grieving the loss of her child when she is convinced by others to volunteer at a summer camp for transplant children and their families. James McClain came thisclose to losing his daughter, but a heart transplant has given her a second chance. Having beaten back death, Molly chafes under her dad’s overprotective nature and thinks a new romance is the perfect distraction to give her a little freedom. In Molly’s opinion, Rachel is the perfect match for dad, James. But Rachel’s loss has made her terrified to try love again, particularly with a man whose daughter may or may not survive.
Susan Gable weaves a beautiful tale of love, loss, and hope with characters and scenes that will make you weep. A wonderful, emotional read!
Open this book and immerse yourself in the touching story of love’s power to heal broken hearts. Grab some tissues, because you will cry. Guaranteed. But some of your tears will be happy ones, especially at the end.
I appreciate the way Susan Gable includes unusual (and sometimes sensitive) subjects in her novels, which set them apart from the usual cookie-cutter romances. Her well-researched stories always teach me something, and this time I learned about child organ donors and recipients and their families–a subject I’d never really thought about until I read this book.
Well-written and proofread, Firefly Wishes joins Ms. Gable’s other titles on my list of books to be kept and enjoyed more than once. Read this beautiful story. You won’t be disappointed!
It’s just a year since Rachel lost her young son. Facing pressure from her workplace to get her act together, a friend has sent her to the camp for organ recipients and their families. A very emotional story of loss and the fear of loss. There are also happy moments for all characters. Very well done and believable.
If the danger posed to such patients by anti-vaxxers had been incorporated….
I read an advance copy and voluntarily post this review.
This is a story that will touch your hearts .
The author deals with the subject of organ transplants , the donor’s family and those you who receive the organ.
For one set, in this case Rachel Thompson, the death of her little boy, might have given others a chance to live, but Daniel’s death has left Rachel a shell of her former self. How can a mother ever overcome such sorrow?
For James McClain and his daughter Molly, a heart transplant has given them joy and a chance of having a healthy and long life.
They meet at a camp for those that have received a transplant and their families. Rachel is there as the art teacher, and as an ultimatum from her boss.
James, a psychologist, is intrigued by Rachel and the friendship develops into something very special. Something Molly is trying to encourage , since she wants a Mom.
It’s a thought provoking story that is at times sweet, at others heartbreaking but also heartwarming. A chance to heal, new beginnings and hope.
Another winner by this talented author.
I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Caution: This book is both heart-wrenching and heart-warming.
Rachel has hit the lowest point in her life after losing her son and her marriage, and has been coerced into spending two weeks at a summer camp for families of children with organ transplants. She still hasn’t come to terms with her son’s death, let alone the fact that donating his organs meant other children could live. But she has to attend this camp, or her job as a school teacher is in jeopardy.
James is still very overprotective of his daughter, Molly, even though she’s thriving after her recent heart transplant. He hopes their time at Camp Firefly Wishes will give her a fun and (relatively) carefree childhood experience.
James and Rachel hit it off right away, but there are complications aplenty as they each navigate their separate parenting experiences as well as the demands of their current situation. Rachel had the furthest to go in her personal journey, but I enjoyed watching James learn to live again for himself, not just for his daughter. This is a beautiful romance that also drives home the importance of family and the tightrope of fear that parents face every day. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
This was a truly unique reading experience. I enjoyed the characters, young & old. The storyline was sweet & unique, even with the heavy topic of organ transplants & organ donors.
It’s difficult to put into words what families on both sides go through before, during & after organ transplants.
