From the New York Times bestselling author of On Mystic Lake comes a powerful novel of love, loss, and the magic of friendship…
In the turbulent summer of 1974, Kate Mularkey has accepted her place at the bottom of the eighth-grade social food chain. Then, to her amazement, the “coolest girl in the world” moves in across the street and wants to be her friend. Tully Hart seems to have it all — … it all — beauty, brains, ambition. On the surface they are as opposite as two people can be: Kate, doomed to be forever uncool, with a loving family who mortifies her at every turn. Tully, steeped in glamour and mystery, but with a secret that is destroying her. They make a pact to be best friends forever; by summer’s end they’ve become TullyandKate. Inseparable.
So begins Kristin Hannah’s magnificent new novel. Spanning more than three decades and playing out across the ever-changing face of the Pacific Northwest, Firefly Lane is the poignant, powerful story of two women and the friendship that becomes the bulkhead of their lives.
From the beginning, Tully is desperate to prove her worth to the world. Abandoned by her mother at an early age, she longs to be loved unconditionally. In the glittering, big-hair era of the eighties, she looks to men to fill the void in her soul. But in the buttoned-down nineties, it is television news that captivates her. She will follow her own blind ambition to New York and around the globe, finding fame and success… and loneliness.
Kate knows early on that her life will be nothing special. Throughout college, she pretends to be driven by a need for success, but all she really wants is to fall in love and have children and live an ordinary life. In her own quiet way, Kate is as driven as Tully. What she doesn’t know is how being a wife and mother will change her… how she’ll lose sight of who she once was, and what she once wanted. And how much she’ll envy her famous best friend…
For thirty years, Tully and Kate buoy each other through life, weathering the storms of friendship — jealousy, anger, hurt, resentment. They think they’ve survived it all until a single act of betrayal tears them apart… and puts their courage and friendship to the ultimate test.
Firefly Lane is for anyone who ever drank Boone’s Farm apple wine while listening to Abba or Fleetwood Mac. More than a coming-of-age novel, it’s the story of a generation of women who were both blessed and cursed by choices. It’s about promises and secrets and betrayals. And ultimately, about the one person who really, truly knows you — and knows what has the power to hurt you… and heal you. Firefly Lane is a story you’ll never forget… one you’ll want to pass on to your best friend.

A hearbreaking and readable story of women’s friendship.
good reading
I love reading Kristin Hannah’s books. She grabs you from the beginning and doesn’t let go. Firefly Lane is one of my favorites.
I’m a big fan of the Firefly Lane series, but this book is 10 times better. The friendship between Kate & Tully is the friendship so many women long for. Do yourself a favor and read this story.
Not as good as some of her other books.
So I watched the Netflix series first so I went in thinking it was going to be pretty close to the series. I wasn’t prepare for the heartbreaking story. As always Kristin Hannah wrote an amazing story.
This book – wow! It gave me all the feelings. There were some points that I wanted to throw this book across the room in anger. Other parts made me laugh and then there were so many parts that brought me to tears.
Firefly Lane follows Kate and Tully through their 40 years of friendship. The characters were so relatable and I think we’ve probably …
At once a coming of age novel and the story of a lifelong friendship, Firefly Lane explores the lives of Katie Mularcky and Tullulah “Tully” Hart as they grow together, apart, and together again over the span of four decades. With a beautifully written narrative style, the true beauty of this book is Hannah’s skill at character development. …
My heart broke through this whole book in the best possible way. I loved it so much and was so excited to watch the show on Netflix. But I got two episodes in and I’ve lost interest because the story is too different from the book. This book was beautifully written and the love story within so important to Kate’s character. This book was just …
Quite a different kind of story about best friends in an unconventional way. One takes more than she gives the other give her strength. Good read
This book was entertaining for the first 300 pages. After that, I felt tired every time I thought of the 179 more I had to read to finish it. It was fun to go down memory lane because I’m near the same age as the characters, but after a while, I began to think some of the scenes could have been edited or even deleted to keep the story moving. I …
A complex, long story about two women who at their most loneliest time, during adolescent, become lifelong friends. The story begins when we introduced to Tully, a young girl who lives with her Gran, and suddenly her drug-addicted (lost) mom comes back into the picture only to abandon the protagonist. This is Tully’s issue, one that will be the …
Read this book after watching the Netflix series. I enjoyed it even though I basically knew what was happening. There are a few differences from the series and, of course, the book has a lot more details. I liked it well enough to read the follow up book “”Fly Away”, which I enjoyed even more, probably because I had no idea what was going to …
Friends are family we chose for ourselves.
For 30 years, Tully and Kate buoy each other through life, weathering the storms of friendship, jealousy, anger, hurt and resentment. They think they’ve survived it all until a single act of betrayal tears them apart and puts their courage and friendship so the ultimate test.
I don’t know what took my …
Longer than it needed to be & way too similar to Beaches.
Very emotional connection to this book. Loved it and sometimes i wanted to punch Tully in her face. I loved it. Worth the money spent on the book.
Wow, what a wonderful reading experience this story was! A tale of friendship that spans over three decades and filled with so many life changing moments that so many of us will be able to relate to.
Tully grew up with a transient alcoholic mother who smokes weed and prefers to be known as Cloud. She had some ‘normal’ years when she lived with …
