I am enjoying the audiobooks for this series, the Dark Kings is a very interesting concept, Dragon shifters, this time we get Tristan’s story, one I really wanted to know, with his past been erased and being the newest King Dragon, and we get Sammie, Jane’s sister, so this was going to be interesting and it was. Looking forward to get the rest.
Fire Rising is the second in the Dark Kings series by the very lovely Donna Grant. As always, I recommend reading the books in order to get the full effect of the story line, so not a standalone book.
In Fire Rising we welcome back familiar charters, and some new ones, but as always, it is back to Dreagan. In the previous novella we meet Sammi, the unknown step sister to Jane. This is where our story starts. In her pub, Jane comes to find out that her partner has done something that has put her life in major danger. However, it is not just her life that is on the line, it is also her pub. The pub her and her mother worked so hard to build together. After the loss of her mother, it is one of the only things she has left, and isn’t willing to give it up. That was until she is shot at and said pub is blown to pieces. Sammi has one place to take refuge, with her sister at Dreagan.
Tristan is the newest of the Dragon Kings. He fell from the sky two years ago, booty naked, with nothing more than a sword and a blank space where his memories should be. He learns he is a Dragon King, a king to the amber Dragon, but more than that, he can never die, he is immortal. After some time, he learns that he has a twin out there, but has no memory of him or the time before he fell from the sky.
Not until he meets Sammi…
The connection between Sammi and Tristan is instead and powerful, something neither of them were expecting, but none the less fierce. When Sammi makes her way to Dreagan, she is is more trouble than she knows. She is being used to get to the Kings from an old enemy, and nothing is going to stop them from getting what they want.
Slowly, Tristan starts to remember things from his life before being a King, but can he put that aside to keep Sammi safe? Can he go against what his mind is telling him?
I was so excited. I thought for sure I would find out who was behind it all. There is a conspiracy against the Dragons. The Dark Fae are working with someone very powerful. Someone has influenced powerful people. Someone has control over government entities. But who???
War is coming. The signs are there. Tristan fell out of the sky two years prior having no memories of the past. Tristan doesn’t remember his twin or what he used to be. What he does know is that he can’t get Sammi out of his thoughts.
Sammi showed up on Dragon territory searching for a place to rest. On the run for four weeks, she is exhausted, ill from a gunshot wound, needing safety for a few hours. She knows she is being followed. She has worked hard to loose the tail but they always find her.
She won’t stop running. She won’t stop hiding. Will she find safety? Will Tristan and Sammi accept who they are to each other? Will the evil win? Just when I thought nothing could go wrong, so much does having me rushing to the next book in search of another happily ever after.
Triston is the newest Dragon King to be made in an extremely long time. He has no past and doesn’t even have a name. One of his Dragon King brothers names him.
Sammi is a pub owner on the run from the mob. After being betrayed by a close friend she has no one to turn to but the half sister she barely knows.
I fell in love with Tristan and was a little jealous of Sammi. They are two people that really need the love and care of family. And while Tristan tries to get his memories back Sammi is right there with him to help him deal with it all.

Sammi, Jane’s sister (Dawn’s Desire), is on the run and heads to Dreagan. While resting there she meets Tristan (Duncan) and is instantly attracted to him. Their relationship was quick, steamy, and filled with danger.
I really liked Sammi. She was strong, stubborn, and yet, very vulnerable. Sammi has to face a lot of challenging things throughout this book: dragons are real, the dark fae are after her, and most importantly, her own feelings about love.
Tristan, also known as Duncan the Warrior, is struggling to find out who he is. Is he Tristan? Is he Duncan? Can he be both? The struggle gets even harder after meeting Sammi because she keeps triggering memories of his past. His instant attraction to Sammi makes him leary and standoffish at times.
I really liked these two and the trials they faced. The story keeps getting better and more complex with each of these books. Who is after the Kings? Is it Ulrik or is someone else pulling the strings? I can’t wait to see what happens next because I don’t remember at this point (been 5 years). Also what is about Rhi???
Great series
Another great and very enjoyable book in the Dark Kings series. Of course I was dying to read Tristan’s book after he discovers he could possible be Duncan and Ian finds out Duncan is alive. I don’t think I liked this one better than Kellan, but I loved his struggle.
I totally understand Tristan’s confusion about who’s side to take when there’s so much about the Dragon Kings history he does not know. But he also battles with possibly being Duncan, a life he doesn’t remember and his place among the Dragon Kings. He doesn’t know who he is. But when Jane’s sister is in trouble and comes to her, Tristan is immediately taken with her. But they are both afraid of letting anyone get too close. I loved seeing their relationship grow.
I liked how more of the story is unfolding and motivations of the Dark Fae is still am mystery. Olrik is still a master schemer and always seems to have a plan. I can’t wait to read more of this story.
