Gwen’s never wanted to be a leader, but when no one else stepped up, she took on the role. As the mayor of post-apocalyptic Shreveport, she’s made decisions to protect her people…and most of them have backfired disastrously. When she discovers that the dangerous gold dragon lurking outside of the fort has decided she’s his mate, heartsick Gwen thinks that the best thing she can do is confront him … him and take him far away from the city.
She does this to save her people – her sister, her friends, her fort.
She doesn’t expect to understand the dragon.
She certainly doesn’t expect to fall in love.

It seems that I am in the minority when it comes to this book. Yes I gave it 5 stars, but not for the reasons you may be thinking.
Our protagonist, Gwen, thinks she is doing everyone in Shreveport a favor when she stepped up to be the mayor. When, in all actuality, I firmly believe she was just the goober that volunteered to do a job nobody else wanted. She obviously is not a good leader; and while I can’t fault her for trying, I can say that whining to the people you are trying to protect isn’t the way to make your community feel safe and/or cared for. Yep, I agree that Gwen’s character was just annoying and pessimistic.
On to our Drakoni – Vaan. He was the one of the saving graces to this story. Gwen “sacrifices” herself to him to try to save her fort as Vaan will not stop circling Shreveport until he gets his mate. However, being Gwen, she won’t accept Vaan because she’s too busy continuing on with her self-loathing. Vaan isn’t giving up on her – lucky for Gwen and us readers – and shows that he is one of the most swoon-worthy Drakonis of the series thus far. I don’t think I could have stomached Gwen without him.
So the question remains: why did I give this installment 5 stars? Well, because of the secondary plot line and the supporting characters – of course. I wasn’t really that invested in the lovebirds this go around -however I was intrigued by Ruby’s decision to give this one a slow-burn vibe – but I really enjoyed all the twists and turns that happened in this book. We are finally making some leeway in this post-apocalyptic world with some pretty kickass characters. And I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Fireblood Dragons is an entertaining, consistent series. In this one, Fire in his Spirit, Gwen, the leader of the Shreveport settlement, haunted by mistakes she’s made leaves the safety of the settlement to lure away the dragon, Vaan. Of course, Gwen gets her HEA with Vaan. What I particularly liked about Fire in his Spirit were the hints of what’s to come in future books: getting to know more about Azar the Salorian and that something even worse than the Salorians is headed toward Earth.
First let’s just comment on how awesome the cover is! The beauty, the details… I could just stare and stare.
I love how the further we get into this series the more information we pick up about this current post apocalyptic world as well as the world the drakoni left behind. I eagerly snatch up every crumb that is dropped to add to the world building.
I also thoroughly enjoy how each heroine and hero is unique. They all compliment each other. The women have different strengths and weaknesses. And the drakoni are all different and carry with them different memories of their past. I can’t wait to see how everything fleshes out and what connections they may have all had in the past.
Gwen was reluctant to be mated with Vaan. She initially ventured out after him almost as a martyr. A way to protect everyone when she no longer felt able or worthy to lead. It took her a lot of convincing to believe in the connection that she and Vaan built. So as far as Ruby books go this had more of a slow burn element to it. But no worries once they get it on the pages steam right up!
Vaan is the sweetest dragon ever!! The way he waits for Gwen to accept him, just melts me. Not only does he care for her when she hurt but he takes the time to learn how to communicate with her before mating.
Love this story, can’t wait for more.
I absolutely love the Fireblood Dragon series! Such fun books and each book leads to the next. I picked up one after another and could not get enough.
Texas Hugs and Happy Reading!!
Poisoned minds and perilous possibilities
Wow! Fireblood Dragon series fans have waited a minute for this 5th story, and it’s a doozy. Gwen is the human female whose scent calls to Vaan, another demented drakoni warrior. It’s pretty well established now that the cure for dragon dementia is mating, and that mated dragons make great allies for humanity. So Gwen knows she has to accept Vaan for the good of her people as well as for herself, yet she spends a great deal of the story dithering and denying them both peace and safety. It’s a case of toxic self-doubt. Vaan, when he can remember anything, knows he wants Gwen but drakoni don’t take what isn’t freely given, so on they wobble. Excluding mating, they find pleasurable sex and growing rapport, but this is Gwen’s journey and it goes at her diffident pace. Things are looking scary on the drakoni front, too. Azar, the mind-stealing Solarian responsible for enslaving the drakoni in the first place, appears to change his tune, and his loyalty – what brought THAT on? Is there a new threat to the devastated Earth, or is this more Solarian deceit? Stay tuned. Oh, yeah – HEA for H/h (FINALLY) and new characters to push the series forward – I love this stuff!!
This is a fun series. I like that it has different characters in each book but you stay connected to past characters
First I’m going to say that this author rocks when it comes to giving us an “what’s happened so far”. These books come out with months in between and it’s nice to get that little jog in the memory on what’s happened if you can’t remember everything. I wish more authors would do this when there is a series.
Now on to the story! It totally lived up to everything I was hoping for. The hot as sin dragons and the human women who are their salvation. I love how the world is really evolving. We get a romance that heats up the pages, banter and humorous moments that keep the flow good and also amazing world building. Vaan and Gwen totally rocked my socks! Seeing them work together even with the barriers that they had was awesome. I could find a lot better word for it but that’s the one that popped in first.
The story of the rift was a twisting into something that I’m excited to jump into. We will be getting another book in the future that will twist and turn what we already know some but I have a feeling that it’s going I get a lot more intense as the story’s go. I can’t wait! 5 stars #2OCCJD
So fantastically full of great elements! There is so much going on here! Gwen doubts herself and is feeling the pressure of leading her group of survivors. she feels so deeply about things, it makes her a better leader than she thinks she is. She is riddled with doubt. I didn’t ge the importance of Petey to the story, I don’t see how his presence progressed the plot. Vaan is a mess, but there is a solution. I loved the drama of the everyday life in the camps, but the monotony was real, and a cold shower beats no shower, why did no one get that? By the time the action heated up, I was ready for it. I can see elements that can happen in the future for Daniela and Mara. Mara’s character is on e of those things that bugged me though. She went from being that scared little bunny into…well you’ll see. It was kind of unbelievable, but hey, that’s fiction, right? I loved this addition to the series, I think you will too!
Ruby’s back with her drakoni and I could not be happier. I love her books and this series. Vaan is sweet and Gwen is feisty. They are pretty much perfect for each other. I can’t wait to see what’s coming next.
The world building in the Fireblood Dragons series is amazing. Ruby Dixon’s descriptive storytelling paints a picture so clear that you can see yourself in this dragon invaded post-apocalyptic world. You’ll fall for the misunderstood dragon heroes, and cheer on the heroines who dare to tame them. Her characters are strong, but not without their flaws. Fire in His Spirit had me flipping pages, eagerly devouring the story from beginning to end. You get a satisfactory HEA for the main characters, but there’s so much going on in this series that it leaves you waiting breathlessly for the next installment.
