Fantastic read, to say the least. I loved the new additions of Brunnea, Ella, Dalia, and Brann into this epic retelling of Snow White/Cinderella/Rapunzel with a dark twist.
In Fire & Frost, our characters grow more interesting and their backstories are further revealed. Also, Queen Blanche is on the prowl once more, this time tracking Princess Winterberry in the Kingdom of Ardor. Blanche is on a quest to seize control of the Seven Kingdoms. Winterberry is on a mission to stop her.
But can Winter convince the rival Kingdom’s prince that she’s not like Blanche and is trying to free Canens from her grasp? Or, will Winter once again find herself prisoner in a strange land, simply for the crime of being Blanche’s stepdaughter?
The plot grows more complex and the characters become deeper in this epic/dark fantasy with a few thriller elements.
As much as I enjoyed the first book, this one was even better! I loved the twist on Cinderella in this book and how it intersected with the Snow White tale from Book 1. If you are a fantasy or fairytale lover, this is a great series to check out.
I received this novel from Booksprout. Thank you! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This novel was a great sequel to the Canens Chronicles. There is more magic, adventure, love, betrayal, and so much more! The novel alternates mainly from Winterberry, the main character of the series, Blanche, the evil queen of Canens and Winterberry’s stepmother, and a new character named Ella. A few characters from the previous novel make appearances, but are not as prominent as they were in the first book, but I am looking forward to seeing those characters, Rus, Cito, and Elaina, return with the other novels in the series. Winterberry needs to gather allies to stop her stepmother and face her own fears regarding magic, for she needs much help if she has any chance of stopping Blanche and the faery who helps her. We meet Ella, who is like “Cinderella” and is a kind person, who wants love. Ella runs the stables and horses on her father’s property after he died, but is looked down upon because she is a woman trying to work in a “man’s” world. I admire Ella’s determination and that she always tries to see the best in people. Ella and Winterberry’s lives become intertwined in this novel, each needing the help of the other. The author weaves a great tale, combining the stories of Snow White, Cinderella, and Rapunzel, reminding me of the series “Once Upon a Time”. Still, Winterberry’s quest is not completed and she still has other kingdoms to seek out to prevent Blanche from ruling over them all. If you love fairy tales, this is a series for you!
Better This Time Around
I will admit that I was not a particular fan of the first book of this series as I found the heroine quite often acted in stupid ways. But I do like to give an author or a series at least a couple of chances to impress me. A book like Fire & Frost is one that makes me glad that I have such a policy. I enjoyed this book so much more than the last one. The details of the struggles of the characters were so vivid that I could easily imagine them, and I am a very visual reader. I had wondered when the Cinderella aspect was going to enter the series, as I knew it had both a Snow White and a Cinderella underpinning to it. We meet Ella here. I loved following the trajectory of the relationships between the main characters. Their inherent personalities lead to natural conflicts and seemed realistic to me. I look forward to the next book in the series.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
