A wonderful story with a gothic feel, which is one of my favorites, bring two childhood friends back together in an unexpected way.
Cassandra Dean, with her descriptive pen, pulled me into the scenes making me feel I was an observer as the story unfolded.
Alexandrea grew up with her next door neighbor Maxim. They were truly best friends and had all kind of adventures. He left when he was a teenager and was sent to America when word came his ship went down and he was lost. All of her life, she could never forget him and yet.
Years later, there are rumors of a strange lights in his family’s old house, that is not occupied and she goes to investigate and she finds him.
I will leave it at that so you will need to read to find out what happens but he stole my heart and their love for each other lasts the test of time.
This was my first time reading something by Ms. Dean and it was a very charming read. It is a very sweet and short novella that is just the perfect size if you’re craving a little bit of Regency but don’t have a lot of time. It was heartwarming to see Alexandra and Maxim find each other again and reconnect. A wonderfully romantic story with a little bit of spice. I will definitely be looking for more of Ms. Dean’s books to read!

My first by this author and I am ready to read more. Great characters and storyline, different from most books I’ve read. Had me hooked from the beginning.
What a beautiful well written second chance story. Lord Maxim Farlisle lost his memory in a shipwreck eleven years ago and has finally come home after remembering. But instead of letting what is left of his family know he has come back he lives in the deserted Waithe Hall his deserted family home. Lady Alexandra Torrence decides to investigate the estate imagine her surprise when she finds her childhood friend living there. I enjoyed reading the story between these two. I would recommend this book. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
On a paranormal investigation of Waithe Hall, Alexandra is at first shocked to find that someone is staying there and then overjoyed to realise that her childhood friend is not dead. Whilst investigating the villagers ghostly claims, Alexandra and Maxim rediscover their closeness, and Maxim is able to open up and confront his past. A quick read with interesting characters and the difficulties faced by a dyslexic person in that era.
I voluntarily read and reviewed a copy of this book gifted by the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Cassandra Dean weaves a story from beginning to end with threads of intrigue, mystery, suspense and love in Finding Lord Farlisle. In the dark and closed up manor house Alexandra enters on a mission… to find a ghost at Waithe Hall. As the stormy night flashes with lightning Alexandra looks up as the library door slowly creeks open and there in the shadows is a tall dark figure! Maxim has returned to Waithe Hall as pieces of his memory is slowly is returning, but he has never forgotten Alexandra. Maxim is haunted by emotional scars and believes he is a broken man. Will Maxim be able to let go to that which haunts him and find love with Alexandra? Their story beautifully written, with appealing characters, remarkable emotions, a good and witty plot, with tension-building twist that brings this read together perfectly.
4.25 STARS
This is my first novel by this author and I will be reading more of her work.
She starts the story about a lost love and you can feel in your soul the anguish at losing her friend at 14. It unravels perfectly when she discovers he is alive, but with little memory.
The H slowly starts to remember little by little and he can feel the connection. The romance builds slowly and when they make love (outside marriage), it is full of passion. Heat level 2.5 of 5 several times.
Three things left me wanting to know more. I wanted to read the reaction of the H’s brother’s when they discovered he is alive. Did they discover something to help him with his reading (dyslexia – though no name for it at this time)? What did they do for income – surely not her ghost hunting skills?
There is an epilogue that was 16 years in the future. I was nice, but wanted to know more. Other than that, this was a 5 star review, if it addressed what I already mentioned.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romance, great banter and some spice. I received this free from Bookfunnel. I am voluntarily leaving a review and all opinions are my own. (ljb)
I so enjoyed this delightful short story by Cassandra Dean!! When I had read the blurb and noticed the mention of ghosts and spirits, I couldn’t resist getting this book because I’ve always had a fascination with ghost stories and such, just like Alexandra:)
When Alexandra goes to Waithe Hall to investigate rumors of a ghost, the last thing she expects is to find Maxim there…..the boy she had loved and thought dead the last 11 years. After a shipwreck accident, Maxim has been wandering around, having only some memories of his past. He does remember a golden haired girl and there she is, standing right in front of him! As memories return, the two of them grasp this second chance at love.
I really liked the way Alexandra handled Maxim’s not being able to read or write properly (due to what we call Dyslexia today) and told him she’d get him some help with that. All these years he had felt “stupid” and “broken” because of it. Just another little part of the story:)
I received an ARC of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Lady Alexandra Torrence is twenty five years old & has always been fascinated by ghosts & spirits & whilst at her family’s estate in Northumberland she takes the opportunity to investigate the strange lights that have been seen at Waithe Hall the neighbouring estate.
Eleven years ago, a shipwreck robbed Lord Maxim Farlisle of his memory. Recovering himself, he journeys to his childhood home to find Waithe Hall shut and deserted. Maxim makes his home in the abandoned hall. Alex arrives at the shuttered hall to discover a ghost of a different kind—the boy she thought to never see again. Maxim had been the boy next door, her best friend, her soul mate…and then he’d vanished & was reported to have died in a shipwreck.
This is the first book I’ve read by the author & it certainly won’t be the last. I loved both Maxim & Alex & how childhood friendship developed into love. Maxim was still suffering from some memory loss but the more time he spent with Alex the more his memory returned. I loved how she was so matter of fact about his dyslexia. A lovely romance that I read into the night to finish & can’t wait to read Oliver’s story
My honest review is for a special copy, which I won & voluntarily read
