And as the search for Grace reaches fever pitch, Lucie receives a terrifying message. If she is ever to see Grace again, Lucie has no choice but to face the past she tried hard to bury forever. And she must do it alone.

Finding Grace is a book about secrets, motherhood, and a parent’s worst fear–a missing child.
From the first page, this book gripped me and had me flying through the pages. I loved the protagonist, Lucie, because she felt down-to-earth and genuine. Slater did an amazing job at building her character and making readers like her while also leaving us with just a hint of doubt about her intentions. I loved trying to figure out if I could trust her. The first-person narration in the majority of the book allowed me to explore the protagonist’s mental state and her trustworthiness in a way that made the book even more engaging.
The book begins with Grace, Lucie and Blake’s nine-year-old daughter, disappearing. The book takes readers on a journey through who can be trusted, what happened to Grace, and how the past can come back to haunt us.
Woven through the present-day tale is the story of Lucie from her days in university. I loved how her secrets are woven into the story, adding layers of intrigue and mystery.
There were several twist and turns in the story, which I really enjoyed. Overall, I felt like the writing was excellent and the ending was satisfying. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a strong domestic thriller full of secrets and lies.
I will definitely be looking for more of K.L. Slater’s works.
Blake and Lucie Sullivan agree to let their daughter, Grace walk home from her friend’s house after visiting Altoona Park for her birthday treat. Grace has just turned nine years old and wants to feel like a big girl walking back home by herself. Grace’s friend lives on the same street just around the bend and both sets of parents agree to watch Grace walk home, but just for a few seconds she would be out of their sights as she goes around the bend. A few seconds is all it takes for Grace to go missing. Blake and Lucie face a parent’s worst nightmare when their daughter simply vanishes. But Grace’s disappearance kickstarts a catalyst of events that brings to light secrets that both Blake and Lucie are hiding from each other. Could Blake or Lucie truly be the reason why Grace has gone missing?
Wow! I can now see why K.L. Slater has such a huge following and fan base. Finding Grace is the first book I have read by this author and I can honestly say, it definitely will not be the last. I found myself thoroughly engrossed in the story and wondering what happened to Grace. Is she alive? Kidnapped? Held for ransom? All of these thoughts ran through my mind for the better half of the book and then little by little Slater inserts these little glimpses into the past which only made me squirm to read more. Slater intricately weaves the present and the past with such finesse that it was hard to put this book down. Slater just teases you with twist after twist and I must say, I was completely and utterly shocked. The twists were so brilliantly done and were so unique placed at just the right moments where it forces you to keep reading just so you can find out what happens next. I am now sad that the story has ended, but alas Slater has a nice backlog of books I will be wrapping my greedy little hands on very soon.
Blake and Lucie are such well written flawed characters that seem all too real. They are not portrayed as a picture perfect couple and I found that Slater really gives you a lot of insight to both characters which makes them relatable to where you can feel their pain and suffering. Lucie, I felt, really grows the most during the course of this book and in the processes learns what she is capable of both as a mother and as a woman. Besides Blake and Lucie, Slater has written a mother-in-law, Nadine, who could give Joan Crawford a run for her money. She is just awful! There are also a multitude of other people worked into the story that all seemed to have some kind of motive while partaking in some rather shady and sometimes creepy things. Slater definitely keeps you on your toes with her characters that’s for sure.
Finding Grace blends a terrific psychological thriller with a story that could be ripped from the headlines, cleverly placed plot twists, and secrets galore that make this dazzling thriller an absolute gem in the genre. Well played and well deserving of 5 glorious stars!
Finding Grace, psychological thriller by K.L Slater, and my first book by this author.
The book begins with the disappearance of Blake and Lucie’s little 9 yr old daughter, Grace. Grace had just turned 9, and wanted nothing more than to be able to show some independence, and walk home from her friend Olivia’s house, which was just a few minutes from her home.
Her father, Blake was waiting for her outside after Olivia’s parents sent little Grace on her way.
But she never showed up. how could she have disappeared so quickly? There was only one blind spot over a hill that she was out of view.
Frantic, her Mom begins searching for her, asking everyone she passes if anyone has seen her, she is sick with worry and fear, and the police is finally called.
The books alternates between the past and present, revealing secrets each parent has been hiding. Lucie, has a secret she has kept from her husband for many years, and he has his own as well.
Do these secrets hold the key, as to what has happened to little Grace? Who can you trust?
I found the book to a fast paced, a great plot, and storyline. The author was able to keep my attention, and has great writing skills. I have become tired of missing children books, but this was different,. i found myself tearing though the pages to see what happened to Grace. The book is full of suspense with a lot of twists.
I think anyone who enjoys thrillers, will like this book very much. I loved Slaters writing style, and want to read more of her books, I have heard so many positive things about her books, and know many who are fans of hers.
A suspenseful read, so many twists!!
I really enjoyed this book, but was disappointed that the author had to add some profanity to it (always unnecessary). It was hard to put this book down, tho, because I wanted to know what was going to happen next.
Grace has recently celebrated her ninth birthday and is now insisting on walking home from her friend Olivia’s house by herself. It’s a five minute walk and both Grace and Olivia’s fathers have agreed they will watch her as she makes her way home. After spending a day with Olivia and her family at an amusement park, Grace sets out for the short walk home, but never makes it. Lucie and Blake, Grace’s parents, are devastated by her disappearance and the local police are on the job, in a very thorough way. But both Lucie and Blake have secrets they keep to themselves as they are interviewed by the police. At one point a woman in their community makes contact with Lucie and gives her some very important information which changes how Lucie approaches the heartbreaking case.
This was an excellent suspense novel. The characters were well written and the ending was original and unexpected. Strongly recommend.
I received an ARC (Advance Review Copy) through NetGalley and wish to thank them, the author K. L. Slater and the publisher Bookouture for the pleasure of reading this very enjoyable book. This review was voluntary and is my honest opinion.
Loved the book.
Lucie and Blake Sullivan are facing a parent’s worst nightmare. Grace has just turned 9 and begged to be allowed to walk home alone from her friend’s house .. a 5-minute walk… with Blake watching in secret from this end and the friend’s father watching from the other end.
And then everything went wrong …. The friend’s father heard his wife calling him and he went back into the house. He neglected to see Grace finish this half of the walk. On the other end, Grace’s dad got a text message that startled him and he fell and sprained his ankle. He never saw Grace.
Grace seems to have disappeared into thin air. There’s no ransom note or phone call .. she’s just … gone.
Blake is Lucie’s support as she slowly falls apart … but then she finds something in her husband’s office that has her wondering if she knows this man at all. But Lucie also has secrets of her own … things that Blake does not know.
This is such well-written psychological thriller. Told mainly by Lucie, an anonymous voice speaks out every so often .. a voice from her past as Lucie recounts her college years. The main characters are solidly defined… as parents you can feel the terror, the stress, the worry about their daughter.
There are plenty of secondary characters … the neighbor man next door that Lucie doesn’t quite trust …. a friend who may or may not be having an affair with her husband …. her mother-in-law who seems to care more about what people will think rather than worry about her grand-daughter … Lucie’s father, who’s always been a bit controlling.
But who would take Grace … and why?
Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the advanced digital copy of FINDING GRACE. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
K.L. Slater provides an outstanding narrative revolving around the mysterious events of a girl gone missing. Slater’s effort to subtly create an undertone of culpability among multiple characters is rewarded as the reader is left questioning everyone’s motive. Secrets, lies, twists and turns all have the reader hanging on until the very last page. Great read. 5 stars.
Thank you to #NetGalley and #bookouture for this ARC of #FindingGrace
