This book was more about the author than the dog, it was kind of a slow read.
Took a good story and stretched it out for waaaay too many pages.
Hard for me to relate to ultra marathons—seems unhealthy to run for days in extreme (100+) temps.
Don’t understand why he didn’t step up and help the poor dog sooner; didn’t endear me to the author.
I’m a dog lover and this is an enjoyable story. So many wonderful things to hang your hat on here. People helping each other in competition running, a man coming to care for a dog in a foreign land, strangers giving of their time, money, energy and resources to help get this little dog to a new home. It’s heartwarming and an easy read.
I like to intersperse my normal suspense, thriller, sci-fi/fantasy book genres with some non-fiction consisting of occasional self-help, biographies, and travel books. I love animals and feel my life would be incomplete without them. This poignant, moving book hit all the marks. It just goes to show to what extent an animal can touch and change our lives. I couldn’t put it down!
Lovely story.
An outstanding true life story. The little dog captured a man’s heart and never let go! The challenges overcome to bring Gobi from China to Scotland were large but overcome. An extremely worthwhile read.
Found the culture of China and their reaction to a dog very interesting – and the lengths the author went to to get this dog home amazing
It was genuine and recounted the true life adventure of the author and an amazing little dog named Gobi. The love and loyalty of both of them made for an entertaining and heartwarming story. It affirmed the bond between man and dog in an extraordinary fashion.
While not great writing, an interesting look into extreme marathoning and a dog story, too!
To read of a chance encounter that changes someone’s life, for the better, helps me appreciate, even more, the times we are living in. Sure there are people involved that made this possible but the internal spark that caused this story to happen is what grabbed my heart.
I am a Dog lover and found this book to be wonderful. Diana
I loved it.
Haven’t finished it yet but can’t put it down. Touched by one’s love of a dog. So well written!
The books starts out with how he becomes a marathon runner (thanks to his wife) and it is almost crazy how hard some of these marathons are. In this case he runs in the Gobi desert in China. So at first the book deals with his travel inside China where he cannot read anything or speak any Mandarin or whatever. So it is all about running and competing against others who actually end up becoming friends. But, during his running a little dog somehow takes a liking to him and escorts him on his runs. Now comes the problem. He wants to take the little dog back to Scotland where he lives and he runs into all sorts of problems, but there is a happy end.
An amazing read about an equally amazing story, grab your four legged friend and enjoy
That dog inspired the man he adopted to perform better than he ever had. I was in awe over how much that dog did for this man running through Gobi Desert. I am glad that he took this marvelous dog back to Scotland to live with him and his wife. They were kindred spirits, as many dogs are with their families.
Liked the beginning but author kind of loses fplocus on the dog 2/3 of the way in to the story.
An inspirational story of a man’s devotion to a unique and tough little dog. We know life does not usually have such a happy ending for strays but it makes you feel good that at least this little dog got a lucky break.
How some of it will keep you on edge of your seat like the dog pick in china to Uk’
People cared enough to help get his dog out China
Often unpredictable and who wouldn’t love Gobi and want the best outcome for him.
