From the author of Confessions of a Shopaholic series comes a breezy YA novel about a girl with paralyzing anxiety. Distressingly, it is her relationship with a boy that helps ‘cure’ her… GET IT TOGETHER AUDREY YOU DONT NEED NO MAN.
I really had fun reading this book. First off, I noticed where they live and how they speak and I love that! It’s so different and fun for me, because I’m not from there, and yet I knew what they were meaning. I have to say my favorite part was the part about the coconut ice cream. WOW! Yay! It’s like the part about the chairs in the movie “Phenomenon,” at least to me. I got that same YAY feeling! The characters were completely alive and vibrant and well defined. The story was harsh and deep but real and good and believable, and somehow at times so incredibly awful, yet everybody could still find the humor, which I believe most readers probably NEED for a book like this. I did, and I appreciated that so much, Sophie. I will now go look for other books you’ve read, and those that you also wrote under a different name. Cool. Thanks.
This was an interesting look into teenage mental illness. I just could not get into it. I really cannot pinpoint why.
This was one of book club choices. I found it to be a quick read. It’s basically the story of a young 9th grader that has something terrible happen to her at her school that causes her to become introverted, depressed, and anxious to be outside/around anyone other than her family. I liked the authors writing style and how this story was presented. It gives insight into some mental health issues and “bullying”. Audrey is a likable character with an odd-ball family (like most of have). Take the journey to “finding Audrey” and meet some other interesting characters along the way.
Being a monstrous fan of Sophie Kinsella, I am a bit biased in reviewing her books at this stage of my fandom. But once again, she has managed to deliver a one of a kind book. It is one of the few that actually addresses mental illness within a story line, but in a truthful and delicate manner. The main character’s past affected her in such a way that she has come out the other side suffering with social anxiety disorder, depression, and other socially debilitating things. But throughout this book, Audrey discovers ways to work through her past as well as a boy who doesn’t just see her illness prevailing over who she really is. It is not a typical plot line, but it is a wonderfully written one. Being that part of my double major is psychology, I think it is really important that people understand anxiety and depression within the modern world, and this book helps better explain those to a mainstream audience.
Sophie Kinsella never disappoints! Charming!
Very good book. Love the story. Super inspirational. You can feel the characters emotions
Enchanting and engaging—the Narrator speaks directly and honestly
A unique one of a kind read! Sophie Kinsella is ALWAYS brilliant but this one is just a gem!!!
This book is about Audrey who finds it hard to be around people. If she’s in a room, the light must be off and she must have sunglasses on. Linus brings out the best of her. He gets her to out with and do challenges to combat her anxiety. I really like this book because it shows how one person can change your life and help you along the journey.
This is my first Sophie Kinsella book and I really enjoyed it. I finished this book in one day and it was really good. I loved Audrey and her family. I liked seeing her family through her eyes and why they acted the way they did. Audrey’s mother is straight up crazy, but very caring for her children, even if it is a lot misguided. Her brother Frank had me laughing so much because he is straight up awesome and smart. While he didn’t completely understand what Audrey was going through, he still protected her and was always aware of things that would make her uncomfortable. Little Felix was super cute and I just felt so bad for Audrey’s dad, a typical father caught in the middle. But I truly loved this family. Then there’s Linus. Oh sweet, Linus, who was exactly what Audrey needed. Their relationship was super cute and I liked how he was able to slowly draw her out of her dark corner.
I loved this book. Its funny and family oriented. It reminds me of my own family and siblings and the craziness that is one’s own family. But I felt the love as well. Audrey was really a sweet girl who I really cared about. I highly recommend this book.
Really enjoyed this book – Audrey is a realistic lead character, which means she can also be a little frustrating, but she is anything but one-note. Audrey is original, stubborn, thoughtful, and sarcastic, and her family is anything but boring. Linus also sounds like the best boyfriend ever. Definitely recommend for a fresh YA read.
