He watched the boy skipping rocks across the clear, still, water. From the cover of dense forest he listened to the childish squeals of delight as the flat hard surface of the stone met the firm unyielding force of the lake. Each hop resulted in an ever widening web of rings, each ring, larger, yet less intense than that which came before. Life, he mused, was like those rings. The further you … traveled from the point of origin, the wider your reach, but the less intense the effect. He’d spent a lifetime struggling to make his mark in the larger rings, but now, he’d decided, was time to avenge the iniquities of his past, and claim the inner ring as his own.
Rescue Alaska is the eighth series by USA Today Bestselling Author Kathi Daley. It is a fast moving mystery series with a paranormal twist.
Rescue Alaska is a small town in northern Alaska where visitors come to hike and ski. Harmony Carson is a lifelong resident who volunteers as a member of the local search and rescue team. Harmony has a unique gift which she often considers a curse. She is able to ‘see’ the individuals she is meant to help rescue, and more often than not she can feel their fear and their pain as well. Harmony lives in a rustic cabin with six dogs, four cats, six kittens, eight rabbits, and a blind mule named Homer.
In the second book in the series, Jake and Harmony are in the process of training a new search and rescue dog when they get a call that a four year old boy has gone missing from the cabin his family rented while on vacation. They join the search and rescue team, along with the local police, in the hope of finding the child before it is too late. Along the way they discover the freshly dumped body of an important member of the community. The police are stumped as to why this popular town resident would have been murdered, until a second community member goes missing and a disturbing pattern begins to emerge.

Review:
As is usual with this author’s books, the characters are wonderfully created: they are realistic, well rounded and three dimensional. Harmony is a strong caring capable woman , and with her special ability, she sometimes has more than she can handle. It tears her up emotionally and physically but she still does what she can to locate missing people. The other members on her S&R team add a lot to the story, including the dogs.
The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and I felt the biting cold and all of the dangers out in the wilderness while I was reading this book. I liked the fact that there was more than one mystery to solve, I was engaged throughout the whole book. There were enough clues to sift through and suspects to consider that I had a hard time playing detective and finding out all of the answers.
I would highly recommend this book, and series, to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. Search and Rescue books are some of my favorite genres to read and this one was excellent. This series is one of my favorites. Be sure you check it out.
I am loving this new series of Ms. Daley’s. I love the setting in Alaska, the search and rescue group, the animals, characters, mystery and a touch of paranormal. Harmony is a member of the search and rescue with a gift of sensing people in need of help. When a search turns up an unexpected body, it leads to the search for a serial killer. This mystery is a little darker but well within the realm of a cozy. Between the mystery and search and rescue, this story keeps moving and keeps you turning the pages. I will read the next in this series.
Harmony Carson works search and rescue in Alaska. Her young pup, Yukon, is training with team leader, Jake Cartwright’s dog, seasoned veteran, Sitka. Jake was married to Harmony’s deceased sister, Val. Harmony is able to establish a psychic connection with those she’s meant to save. Her Maine coon cat calms and grounds her after a grueling day or night’s work.
In this story, a deranged villain is stalking and killing townspeople, and the body count is rising quickly. All Harmony’s dogs and her wolf hybrid, Denali, sense someone lurking nearby. Believe me when I say this story kept my pulse pounding from beginning to end!
Finding Answers earns 5/5 Nail-Biting Nightmares…Murderously Fun!
Four-year-old Vinnie Truman has been reported missing, and the search and rescue team has been activated along with rescue dogs Sitka and Yukon. Harmony finally senses the boy’s curiosity turning to fear, so time is of the essence. While searching for the young boy, Harmony senses a ‘darkness,’ a ‘danger,’ and someone dying. She knew someone was near struggling to survive and ultimately passed, and using Yukon’s skills, they discover the hidden body of a prominent member of the community…dead, evidence of being bound, mouth taped, and throat slit. Murder! But, it’s Denali’s uneasiness, a sense someone is watching, and disturbing nightmares that really send Harmony reeling. Something is out there…
Edge of your seat, Wow! Kathi Daley has penned a great, close to intense, mystery. I cringed when Harmony took her fur-family out for their nightly constitutional…nooo, watch out! Her signature steady-paced and clever storyline also brings in many interactions with her fur-friend characters often making them, like in the Rescue Alaska Mystery series, a key member or a hero. Kathi also writes in a realistic manner…no one Investigates a murder 24/7, not even the police. She shows her characters with a life, like Harmony also waitressing at her step-uncle’s bar and working to make her new animal shelter a success. Ok, do you know how cute a baby moose is?
Finding Answers is book two in the Rescue Alaska Mystery series. This book sucks you in right from the start. I really enjoyed this story. I highly recommend this book!
In this next book of the series Harmony is called in to help find a lost child, during the search she feels another soul in trouble and ends up finding the body of a local pastor. The mans throat has been cut and he was left to die a slow death. Who would want to kill a man of the cloth? When a second local goes missing people begin to wonder what is going on and what do these victims have in common. Harmony starts having nightmares the same night they found the first victim and has no clue if they are just nightmares or if she is truly seeing someone who needs her help. Follow along as Harmony tries to help the police figure out just who this killer is and why he has chosen these people. Along the way she takes in a moose baby, meets a new man, and continues to help rescue those who need her. This series is a bit more intense than what the author usually writes and I’m enjoying this new style of hers. I like how she is able to change it up and look forward to more from this series and these characters.
Kathi Daley’s latest mystery series has more edge than her previous books. It has the dark attraction of television shows such as Criminal Minds, yet the animals and compassion that her loyal readers adore in each of her other series. There is no graphic violence or sex in this book, even though the disturbed serial killer is capable of violence.
Rescue, Alaska is a wilderness town where the residents need to be resilient and resourceful. Still, they come together and care for each other when the need arises. When several of the long term residents go missing, and are found dead, the search and rescue team join with local law enforcement to find a connection. Harmony Carson has a special gift which helps her pick up on the emotions of persons needing help. She also has a gift for helping and training animals, especially canines.
With a few gentle romantic undertones, and hints at some conflicts to come later in the series, we learn more about the main characters as well as the animals of Rescue. Much of the story focuses on searching for persons who do not return from activities and are out of contact. The subtle clues and sharp observances are interesting. Follow along as the pieces are put together.
You can read this as a stand alone book, but you will also appreciate the other books in this series.
Suspenseful Page Turner
Finding Answers is the second book in Kathi Daley’s Rescue Alaska Mystery series and it’s an awesome read. The writing in this fast-paced book flows smoothly, the characters are three dimensional and affable, and the mystery is well plotted. This series has paranormal aspects with the main character being able to make a psychic connection with people in need of rescue. As with all her books, Ms. Daley has provided readers with a clean, fun read, caring and compassionate characters, and an intriguing mystery to try to solve. This book quickly turned into a suspenseful page-turner that was hard to put down and left me craving the next installment.
Harmony “Harm” Carson has lived in Rescue, which is nestled in northern Alaska, her entire life. She lives in a little backwoods cabin with multiple dogs, cats, and rabbits, plus a blind mule named Homer. She works at Neverland, the bar owned by her brother-in-law, Jake Cartwright, and is a volunteer member of a search-and-rescue team that consists of eight full-time members, a handful of on-call members, and two S&R dogs, Sitka and Yukon. Harley Medford, a movie superstar and local town hero, recently purchased a home in Rescue and donated an abandoned building and land for a much needed animal shelter and Harm is involved with the shelter’s daily operations. Harm has a unique gift; the ability to connect psychically with people she’s supposed to help save. Even though the images and feelings threaten to overwhelm and destroy her, she knows embracing the pain and fear is her destiny as well as her burden. One of her cats is a large Maine coon named moose, who has the ability to comfort her and somehow melt away the trauma she experiences.
Jake, the S&R’s captain, and Harm are training Yukon, the S&R’s new rescue dog, when they learn a young boy, Vinnie Truman, has disappeared from a vacationing family’s cabin. While at the Truman’s rental cabin, Harm meets Hank Houston, Rescue’s newest resident and police chief. Yukon picks up Vinnie’s scent and Harm is able to make a connection with the boy. Other than an injured ankle, Vinnie is unharmed; however, while searching for him, Harm senses pain, hopelessness, and death unrelated to him, as well as darkness and danger. Even though Yukon hasn’t been trained in recovery yet, he locates the body that is identified as Pastor Brown. Pastor Brown’s throat had been slit, duct tape placed over his mouth, and there was evidence his wrists had been bound. Harm felt someone was watching them and believed the killer was nearby. The team is called out for more search and rescues and Harm experiences some disturbing dreams.
