#1 New York Times bestselling author John Sandford continues his phenomenal Prey series—and “for those who think they know everything they need to know about Lucas Davenport, [Field of Prey] proves them wrong…” (Huffington Post)On the night of the fifth of July, in Red Wing, Minnesota, a boy smelled death in a cornfield off an abandoned farm. When the county deputy took a look, he found a body … deputy took a look, he found a body stuffed in a cistern. Then another. And another. By the time Lucas Davenport was called in, it was fifteen and counting, the victims killed over just as many summers, regular as clockwork.
How could this happen in a town so small without anyone noticing? And with the latest victim only two weeks dead, Davenport knows the killer is still at work, still close by. Most likely someone the folks of Red Wing see every day. Won’t they be surprised.

A standout among the more recent Prey novels – not that any of them are bad, but this is definitely Sandford working at full speed. It’s grim, and while a lot of the subplots happen off the page, Sandford somehow makes it work by focusing instead on the characters. There’s also a legitimacy to the stakes here, with a disturbing killer and a stark ugly reality to some of its pages that leave a bad aftertaste in the best possible literary way.
No stopping once I get my hands on a John Sanford book. He never disappoints. Field of Prey is no exception. The quiet villain was quite interesting. Keep writing Mr Sanford!
At times, I felt like a lot of unnecessary information was thrown out to keep the story going.
Towards the middle I got much more interested and tried to figure out the plots to the ending. I would definitely read this author again but his writings are not for the faint of heart. His writing is gritty and realistic.
My type if book. Love the action.
Read this book years ago. Always great reading from Sandford. I’m awaiting the next Davenport/Flowers to come out. 🙂
Classic Sandford – great suspense, and stellar characterization
Field of Prey is my fourteenth Lucas Davenport book (the twenty-fourth in the series) and is by far one of the best—and possibly one of the most graphic. If you don’t like reading about the very worst of human behavior, you might have trouble with this one. It starts when a couple of teenagers having sex in a field smell something ungodly. After reporting it, the police discover a hole in the ground stuffed with bodies. Soon, Lucas and his team are on the search for a ruthless rapist and murderer—dubbed the Black Hole Killer—that has been kidnapping, raping, and strangling women for decades. After a colleague, Bob Shaffer, stumbles onto a lead and is murdered, Lucas leads the search to find a monster that turns out to be hiding in plain sight all along. In the meantime, Del Capslock, who is investigating senior citizens into gun-running and drugs, is seriously injured in Texas, prompting Lucas to hire a private jet and fly to Del’s bedside. However, while he’s gone, another cop, Catrin Mattsson, goes missing, and Lucas rushes back to search for her. The action never stops as Lucas turns over every rock to find her. Unfortunately, only after Catrin is brutally raped and nearly beaten to death does Lucas find the killer’s lair and serve up his unique brand of justice. The end is an emotional roller-coaster that had me turning pages and holding my breath. On a happy note, Letty, Lucas’s daughter, is off to Stanford. I hope Letty, one of my favorite characters in the series, becomes a cop. She would make an excellent addition to the BCA.
