Haunting — gripping — beautiful. So powerful!
Fear the Drowning Deep is gorgeous. Lyrical. Atmospheric. Magical. Sarah Glenn Marsh’s debut is perfect for anyone who’s ever looked out at the sea with awe, and wondered what kind of creatures lurk in the deepest places. Utterly haunting.
I’ve been wanting to read this one for a while and am so mad at myself for not doing so sooner. I absolutely loved it! I loved the year it was set, the fact that there were sea creatures, mystery, romance, and so much more!
Bridey was great because she wasn’t a skilled fighter but just a normal girl who found strength from her own courage. She was fierce and protective over her family and I adored that. Morag was another of my favorite characters, such a feisty old woman! Oh, and let me not forget about Fynn. He was sweet and adorable and I wanted to bundle him up in my purse!
The writing was mesmerizing and the story unique with wonderful creatures that I didn’t even know about. So I googled them and was pleasantly surprised at how cool a glashtyn looked! Overall, definitely one of my favorite reads this year!
This clever, unusual plot kept me engrossed, and the characters had a realistic yet unrealistic way about them that was intriguing.
Sarah Glenn Marsh’s debut is a captivating tale of love and loss, fear and doubt, monsters of the sea and inside ourselves, and the strength it takes to endure and conquer them all. Hauntingly written with a richly developed setting of the Isle of Man in the early 1900s, you can smell the salt of the sea with every page you hungrily turn.
Beautifully-written with mysteries and love lurking within the pages as dangerously as an ancient evil waits in the drowning deeps of Sarah’s unique setting on the Isle of Man. Don’t miss this one!
Readers will be swept away by Bridey’s love story, every bit as thrilling and mysterious as the Isle of Man’s deep, dark sea.
Written for a teen audience, but a good story with plenty of action and magical creatures to keep an adult interested. Very well written with likeable characters, and plot twists that keep you guessing. I found myself hooked with the first chapter. Who doesn’t appreciate a good sea monster, or two, or three…?
I reapply enjoyed this book. It had great imagery and I loved the folklore.
4.5/5 Stars
I received this book for free from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review.
This book really blew me away! If I’m honest, I went into this book not knowing quite what to expect. This book really caught my attention right from the start, and has refused to release its hold on me.
The writing style is just beautiful, and the pacing is perfect. Everything flows remarkably well. I never felt bored or rushed. The only thing that felt rushed was the romance, but not dramatically so. There is plenty of detail. I felt like I was living this story as I was reading. The descriptions really brought the story to life.
The historical and cultural aspects of the story are very well done. The author really did her research. I was impressed with how these elements did not overpower the story being told, but contributed to the setting very effectively.
The way that the historical and fantasy elements were blended together was very well done. Even though there were fantasy elements, it felt like this could have actually happened. It was mapped out brilliantly.
The characters in the book were a pleasure to get to know. I felt so connected to the main character, Bridey. She has so many qualities that I adore in a main character or hero/heroine. She was courageous, selfless, and she was not afraid to stand up for herself. I very much enjoyed getting to know Fynn and experience his struggle. The other characters were a delight as well.
There was an underlying theme through part of the story revolving around bullying and standing up for yourself. I loved the message that it sent about not caring what others think. In the story Bridey is called a witch and some thought her crazy. She is talked about behind her back and also out in the open. She is treated like less of a person, and she has to deal with all the whispers and stares.
The ending of the book was kind of bittersweet. It is open ended, and I would have liked to read something with more finality.
Overall, this is such a fantastic debut! I will most definitely be reading more from this author in the future. If you love mystery, suspense, or creepy stories then you should pick this up!
I was so looking forward to reading this based upon the interesting premise; however, this book did not deliver. The plot fell flat only half-way through.
Not as sweet a happily-ever-after as that usually implies, but in a good way.
Mediocre but still a good read.
