This cult classic of gonzo journalism is the best chronicle of drug-soaked, addle-brained, rollicking good times ever committed to the printed page. It is also the tale of a long weekend road trip that has gone down in the annals of American pop culture as one of the strangest journeys ever undertaken. Now a major motion picture from Universal, directed by Terry Gilliam and starring Johnny Depp … Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro.

Personally, I feel this is one of the great works of modern literature. It takes the world and sets it on its head.
The master of Gonzo at his best.
The blurb captures it perfectly:
“This cult classic of gonzo journalism is the best chronicle of drug-soaked, addle-brained, rollicking good times ever committed to the printed page. It is the tale of a long weekend road trip that has gone down in the annals of American pop culture as one of the strangest journeys ever undertaken”. Hunter …
While it’s been many years since I’ve read this delightful book, it still stands as the funniest book I’ve ever read. Without a doubt many people wouldn’t agree with my assessment but no worries because we are all wired differently. I was, shall we say, a bit wild back in the day so some of our “hero’s” exploits weren’t too awfully different than …
I mean, it’s legendary. A psychedelic classic, Gonzo journalism masterclass. I laughed, I cringed, I learned. I broke a sweat sometimes.
A map cap romp in search of the American Dream.
What could I say about F&L? It’s the kind of book that lifts you out of your seat and tosses you through a window. I’ll buy a new copy every so often, read it and reread it with the book always in my back pocket, and then hand it off like gospel to someone who’d enjoy it. I think that’s the best sign of a good book: the impulse to give it away to …
Brilliant American humor and uncommon perspective on the American dream.
Some trippy stuff.
ORIGINAL, BUT RATHER OVERRATED.
Pretty sure this is my favorite book.
WAY TOO MUCH promotion of drug abuse. Some accurate observations of Las Vegas.
Just gotta love the original gonzo approach to great American literature.
“Five tacos, one taco burger. Do you know where the American Dream is?”
This is a favorite of mine…I’ve read it three times, which is rare for me as I rarely read anything twice. The story moves at a chaotic pace and always hovers around the edge of ridiculousness. It’s hard to tell how much of the story is true, exaggerated, or completely fabricated (probably somewhat influenced by Thompson’s excessive use of …
Crazy!!
If you ever took psychedelic drugs you will like this book.
Talk about a crazy rollercoaster ride! Thompson was a maniac and fun to read.
Crisp, crackling prose against a backdrop of recurrent madness. I have no idea how he pulled this off, but I’m working on it.
A phantasmagorical odyssey through and jeremiad against the neon-lit commercialized apotheosis of the American Dream, fueled by non-stop heroic mind-altering drug use, and mourning the waning of the sixties counter culture.
