I have a super weakness for things that come in sets, and the magic in David Estes’s series really, really comes in fascinating sets; in this case, markings that indicate what you can do. But for those of you without my fascination with orderly systems and collecting, he places those markings on fantastic characters that you really care about. I think that was the stand-out for me in this series: how much I liked all the characters, and how interesting they were to me.
Plot was great too, mind you! I kept turning pages all the way to the end. But I did it because I liked the people and wanted to know how they got on. (Happy to say I was not disappointed in the ending.)
So… great series! Nice and long! Fascinating magic system! Characters worth following! Check it out. 🙂
I like this book. There is a little jumping around from character to character but it was a good story.
Enjoyable and engrossing Fantasy tale with strong female lead and likable characters, good world building, a solid story worth a read.
Good introduction to the world and characters. I’d like to have a little more background. Looking forward to the rest of the series.
Wow, what a world. All the kingdoms and the stories of the individuals intertwining and building the story. But I think I may be rooting for two groups that will be fighting each other. How to choose?
I have book two in my reading queue.
I found this book to be very entertaining and couldn’t wait to get back to each character to find out what was happening to them. I will be looking forward to the next book in the series.
I loved the whole series and hope there will be more!!!
Started the second book, just as good
I enjoyed this book, but I had a little trouble keeping track of the characters. I enjoyed the idea that a person could be born with a mark telling what their destiny was to be. I’m looking forward to reading more in this series. The strange interconnections between the characters was very intriguing.
This series is in the vein of Game of Thrones given the era, various factions and even some dragons though the general plot line is completely different. The characters are well developed with plenty of detail on all other aspects. If you like fantasy with knights, magic and all that goes with, you will like this series.
I was truly taken by surprise with this book. My first thought was, “This is self-published?” It really feels like a big budget publisher backed it, with great world building and history, complex characters, and interesting dialogue. There were unexpected twists to the story that truly surprised me and kept me engaged throughout. If the rest of the books are like this, I will be finishing the series soon.
This series is a fun read with well fleshed our characters, a likeable protagonist, and a relatable antagonist.
Please read this book!! I can’t wait to read the next ones myself!!
What a great story of regional discrimination and prejudice! So applicable to our times. So many characters you care about facing bad guys, either evil or misguided. Innocents corrupted or matured. A great read. Can’t wait for the next book in the series!
I am so mad that I’ve finished it now that I’ve gotten into the story!! It took me about a quarter of the way through the book before I truly was interested in the story, and it took me about that long to also figure out the flow. However, once I got through the first bit and could follow the authors train of thought and logic behind it all, I almost couldn’t put it down. I only say almost because I have kids and a job that I do have (and love) to deal with. I look forward to reading the short stories and the second book.
If you love Tolken and Araya Evermore’s the Goddess Prophecies then you will love this book like I do. David Estes writes excellent characters and one heck of an epic story. Now he is another of my all time favorite authors along with Tolkien and Araya Evermore. I cannot wait to read the rest of this series.
It is a great read
Predictable. I quickly realized the ending and quit reading.
This book was okay. Certainly would not purchase book #2 unless it’s free.
Great series, I highly recommend it.
