Private Investigator Ava Worthington and her partners head to the mountains to solve the death of a farmer’s son. Without local cowboy Cory Mortel’s protection, Ava won’t get the chance to follow leads as the killer tries to stop her investigation. But Cory seems reluctant to get involved. Cory Mortel has retreated to the seclusion of the mountains after a personal disaster. The last thing he … thing he needs is to babysit a beautiful amateur detective and her friends. But Ava seems to attract danger, so Cory has no choice but to step in and protect her.
One suspect after another is cleared from Ava’s list until she’s sure she has the real killer targeted in her sights, but he’s hunting her, too–a dangerous fact when she’s distracted by her growing feelings for the handsome cowboy who’s there every time she needs him.
How will Ava and Cory find the killer and admit their love before they are buried under a mountain of secrets?

She came to find a killer, will she also find love?
Fateful Fall is the second book I’ve ‘read’ from Erin Unger and like the first one it took me awhile to get into the story but then the last half a total ‘WOW!’ While I did guess the killer’s identity fairly early on I was gobsmacked when I heard the how and the why. I say ‘heard’ because I listened to the audiobook version of the story. The first half of the book kind of reminded me more of a romance as both Cory and Ava skirt around their attraction to each other despite the fact that he has secrets and she won’t be there for long. The suspense really took off in the second half and there were some pretty surprising twists and turns. Now I’m interested in finding the next book in the Worthington Detective Agency series.
The audio production of Fateful Fall delivered one of the most surprising, and unique in my audiobook listening experience, things right off the bat. The book has a double narrator. Yes, you read that right, there are TWO narrators! I loved it! The chapters from Ava’s perspective are narrated by a woman and the ones from Cory’s POV are narrated by a man. This really brought Erin Unger’s novel to life in a totally new way.
On the whole, Fateful Fall was an enjoyable listen and I wouldn’t hesitate to listen to any of Erin Unger’s other books in audio format. If you are looking for a romantic suspense with a strong faith element you should check this one out.

Fateful Fall by Erin Unger
Ava and her two friends have come to town to investigate a murder. The sparks and suspense starts there.
Ava and her team heavily rely on Cody to help them with the investigation. It seems that the police force is of no help.
This book is good. The suspense portion is great with a few twists and turns. The romance is possibly a bit overdone and a bit cheesy, but all in all I really enjoyed the book. It has a great redemption factor and shows God working in the lives of the main characters.

My Thoughts on Fateful Fall:
I loved revisiting the Worthington Investigation team. It has been a while since I last got to read about them and it was very nice to finally find a love for Ava.
This is actually the first book in a series. I read Summer Flash Burn last year and loved it. This is the book that comes before that. It’s just as good and wonderfully written. Not as suspenseful as the second book but still a great read.
Reading them second first was a bit different and I should have read this one first probably but they can each be a stand-alone on their own. It’s just I knew what the ending was going to be.
Erin Unger is a great author that I recommend. I have now read three books by her and they’re all wonderful. Hope you get a chance to read them soon.

Fateful Fall
The Worthington Detective Agency is hired to solve a murder. Will they be able to do it? They start out staying in a Yurt, which is a round tent. I found that interesting since it was something I never heard of before. When staying in the tent a bear appears. They decide to stay at the hotel.
I enjoyed reading the interviews they did in trying to solve the murder. I did not figure out who did it. The book kept me interested from beginning to the end.

I enjoyed the small town setting and the different people who seemed to get along pretty well. I wonder if Ava and her team were stepping on toes as they come to investigate a murder for a client. Right away I knew I wasn’t going to like the victim’s grandmother. She was very unfriendly and had this aura around her like she was in charge of the town. She was a very intriguing character and I wanted to know more about her.
Ava and her partners arrive in town to investigate a murder that no one seems to want to clear up. Plenty of people had things to say but not enough to really point a finger at anyone. The story does move a bit slow for me at times and I was ready to get to who the guilty person was. The relationship between Ava and Cory was front and center in the story and the murder investigation took a back seat through most of the book. I did like Cory and his willingness to help Ava out. Someone is not happy that outsiders are in town which puts Ava and her team in danger.
Cory’s past is worth mentioning because it led him to Christ. I enjoyed reading how he went through a hard time and almost lost everything. His determination to change is very evident in how he treats Ava. This part of the story was well written and it showed how a person could become humble in the face of scandal. It helped Cory to learn to forgive and look at life differently.
The author does throw a twist in the story that takes readers on a journey of prejudice, anger and pride. I loved how the author used this scenario to allow us to remember the people who were tortured by a man whose hatred almost destroyed the world. The story takes on a serious tone at the end and does a great job of showing how God is always there to protect us.
