Totally enchanted with this epic and riveting story. The characters are well made with good and evil, plenty of action, betrayals, romance, magic and mythic creatures and people. Well worth reading. It is as good as reading Tolkien. I cannot wait to read the next 3 books in this series!
Eye of Obscurance (Book 1) by Jeffrey L. Kohanek has captivating characters, wonderful world-building, plenty of action, and is an entertaining read! I easily lose interest if there are too many people to follow, but this story held my attention and it was neat to see how they all fit into the climax.
Balance of Magic (Book 2) is another exciting story! This time I listened to the audiobook. It’s a lot of fun listening to Travis Baldree narrate the story and he doesn’t exaggerate the different voices, which I find can be jarring. On the other hand, some of the voices (especially belonging to the female characters) are almost the same. I still think he does a fabulous job with such a big cast of characters. It helps that the author writes descriptively with just enough information, so it’s easy to identify who is talking and who is thinking to themselves even with the different scene changes and varying points of view.
The adventure continues in Temple of the Oracle (Book 3). Jeffrey L. Kohanek does great world-building and creates wonderful characters. There’s Jerrell aka Jace (the thief), Narine (the princess and master wizardess), Adyn (Narine’s bodyguard), Rhoa (the acrobat), Rawk (the stone-shaper dwarf), Brogan (a retired soldier), and Blythe (the archer). I’m interested to find out more about Princess Priella. Is she going to be one of the good guys or a bad guy? What about our storyteller, Salvon the Great?
Usually, the pacing is good, but I did find that things slowed down at Kelmar when our heroes are helping the sisters at the temple to understand the oracle. I listened to the audiobook. Travis Baldree does an excellent job narrating the voices of all the different characters. Whether you grab the audiobooks or read them yourself, this epic fantasy series has everything to keep your attention.
I read an ARC for Book 1 and received Audible codes for Books 2 and 3. This is my honest and voluntary review.
I was glad this was a three-book set as it took a while to develop the many characters and build this fantasy world. It would have been harder to like just getting the first book read. Now that I know this is a well-written saga in the making I can recommend it for anyone wanting something different. The magic system is unique, the world is recognizable but unfamiliar. There is a whole absolute power corrupts absolutely aspect of this world to quite a high degree so of course, our heroes have to balance it out. Plenty of surprises, twists and turns with a wildly diverse group of players, good, evil, and aloof. Thanks for the ride Jeffrey L. Kohanek
When the male MC enters the story dressed as a woman, all in the name of his shady trade (and without batting an eyelid, of course), you know it’s going to be good! There are no limits when planning a heist!
And trust me when I say – it only goes up from there! Like, sky-rockets!
Because this series has it all! From great world-building and fleshed-out, engaging characters, to a fantastic magic system (hats off!) and a highly entertaining story, this series has something to offer for everyone!
There is action, intrigue, power struggles, magic, large-scale battles, witty banter, romance, mythological creatures, and opposing Gods! Don’t tell me you read that and still don’t want to check this badboy out!!
Go buy it already!
Eye of Obscurance (Fate of Wizardoms #1). my seventh read from author Jeffrey L. Kohanek. Well-written with intricately developed characters you can invest heavily in and the storyline with its intricate twists & surprises as the tension & suspense ratchets up throughout the book’s length. 300 pages but reads even longer with the attention to detail written into the story. Owning both the Kindle & Audible editions I was able to follow along while being read to. I look forward to reading more in this series.
Balance of Magic (Fate of Wizardoms #2). my eighth read from author Jeffrey L. Kohanek. Picks up seamlessly from the end of the first book. 342 pages but reads even longer with the attention to detail written into the story. Kohanek’s fantasy worlds have become one of my favorite fantasy reads.
Temple of the Oracle (Fate of Wizardoms, #3). my ninth read from author Jeffrey L. Kohanek. Picks up seamlessly from the end of Balance of Magic (Fate of Wizardoms #2). Well-written with intricately developed characters you can invest heavily in and the storyline with its intricate twists & surprises as the tension & suspense ratchets up throughout the book’s length. 290 pages but reads even longer with the attention to detail written into the story. Kohanek’s fantasy worlds have become one of my favorite fantasy reads. I was impressed and enjoyed the vocal variety & inflections of narrator Travis Baldree. I look forward to reading Objects of Power (Fate of Wizardoms #4) when I get it. I was given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018)
