John Lescroart’s latest spectacular New York Times bestseller explores the unexpected and shattering consequences of a one-night stand on a seemingly happily married couple—a “dark, disturbing, satisfying read” (San Francisco Chronicle) that asks us to consider how much we really know about the lives of our closest friends.Fatal is John Lescroart’s most highly acclaimed and biggest selling book … acclaimed and biggest selling book in recent years. As the Huffington Post raves, “Lescroart is a master storyteller as he knows how to craft a plot and how to create fully developed characters. In both of these departments, this book comes across as one of his best works.”
When Kate Jameson confesses to her oldest friend, Beth Tully, that she’s obsessing about a married man she just met, Beth is alarmed. As a San Francisco police detective, Beth has seen time and again the destructive repercussions of infidelity. But Kate, despite her happy marriage and two wonderful children, can’t get Peter Ash out of her head and initiates one intense sexual encounter. Confident that her life can now return to normal, Kate never considers that Peter may not be so willing to move on.
Six months later, Peter Ash’s body washes up on a beach, and Beth is assigned the case. As the pool of suspects narrows and the mystery of who Peter Ash became during the final months of his life deepens, Beth is forced to see that the prime suspect might have been right in front of her the entire time.
Fatal is fresh proof that John Lescroart is “a true master of the craft” (Associated Press) whose picture should be “printed beside the definition of ‘spellbinding’ in the dictionary” (Suspense Magazine).

A good stand alone thriller. Consequences play a big part and you think at the beginning that you know what and who but don’t be to sure as the plot has twists and turns to keep you flipping the pages
Fatal by John Lescroat illustrates just how deadly infidelity can be. This is so much more dangerous an obsession than a boiled bunny. This is the creepy jackpot. If you’ve ever considered cheating, here’s where you learn your lessons and learn them well. Just dark enough to keep you awake at night so you can finish reading this book. You’ll love every twisted page. Masterfully penned, Mr. Lescroat!
A one-night stand becomes a nightmare for a SF, CA investigator who later is assigned to the case of that man’s death. Love the twists and turns in this story. Love the weight of the consequences of infidelity that the protagonist comes to know. She had thought, one time and it’d be over. But it’s not. And what happens absolutely rivets you to the page.
A definite page turn, a woman’s bad decision ends in tragedy for a lot of people. This book keeps you guessing the outcome.
I seem to enjoy all of Lescroart’s books. At my age (81), I read for entertainment primarily, and Lescroart delivers.
Lescroart is never disappointing. One of the best
A great read! You’ll love this book!
Another winner from this author
Different from the Dismas Hardy books, and perhaps not as gripping, but still an enjoyable read.
I have never been disappointed in a John Lescroart novel.
A good stand-alone from Lescroart
I love J Lescroart’s D Hardy series and he hit another winner with his new stand alone “Fatal”
The first 20% was kind of slow, but then everything hit the fan with a good ending!
Great book with many twists and turns. Fully kept my interest and I did not have it all figured out by the end. Well-written too.
This book has many twists and turns. It moves along, for the most part. I liked that you couldn’t predict where it was going.
This book was very good with a surprising ending
A Lescroart book is always good. This is just another example of how good a writer he is.
Did not enjoy as much as John Lescroat’s series books. His characters were not people I was able to relate to or care about.
For me, this was not one of Lescroat’s better offerings. Characters were not well developed and it seemed as parts of the story were missing or somehow, forgotten. He’s done much better in the past.
Not up to the normal standards for this author. Took a long time to get all the players in place, and most of the players weren’t that likable. It did have several twists, but I miss Dismis.
