The Italian police detective’s latest case hits close to home, in this novel in the New York Times-bestselling series. For Commissario Brunetti, it began with an early morning phone call. In the chill of the Venetian dawn, a sudden act of vandalism shatters the quiet of the deserted city. But Brunetti is shocked to find that the culprit waiting to be apprehended at the scene is someone from his … scene is someone from his own family.
Meanwhile, Brunetti is under pressure from his superiors to solve a daring robbery with a link to a suspicious accidental death. Does it all lead back to the Mafia? And how are his family’s actions connected to these crimes? The truth must be uncovered in this novel in the Silver Dagger Award-winning series by “one of the best of the international crime writers” (Rocky Mountain News).
“Leon’s devoted readers love her books for their juicy mystery plots, and also for the rich and varied cast of recurring characters, among which is the city of Venice itself.” —Publishers Weekly

This is the first book I’ve read by Donna Leon, so my introduction to Commisario Brunetti and his principled wife, Paola. I enjoyed the mystery, as well as the characterizations. Leon has a way with words, as well. Her imagery and figures of speech are fresh and fun.
I loved getting to see more of Brunetti’s relationship with his wife and her strong opinions. This time they get her in deeper trouble. I like this series, in spite of its gritty subject matter.
law-enforcement, murder, murder-investigation, protests, Venice, greed, trafficking
Have to admit that I don’t really comprehend the need for an individual alone to make protest against a social evil as I’ve always worked in conjunction with others even if I had to gather them. But it makes for a good background to the statement of social evil as …
It’s a little different for Brunetti.
Donna Leon writes one of the best mystery series ever! Fatal Remedies takes its place alongside the others. The depictions of Venice are wonderful as are the ongoing lives of the police inspector who is the central figure.
I am a long time follower of the Commisario Brunetti series. I believe I have read everyone . . . and some of them twice. Love going home with him to see what his wife has cooked for dinner and even bought the cook book in the series. These are not “thrillers” in the sense of horrid murders and gorey details, although there is some of that. …
I have never been to Venice, but thanks to Donna Leon’s descriptive writing, I feel like I have been! This book had some unexpected twists, which I especially enjoyed!
I love all Donna Leon’s books. The Inspector and his wonderful family are always great to “visit”and there’s always food for thought in the cases he explores. Warm humor, great setting–a welcome respite in a harsh world.
Donna Leon is a superb writer. I love her storiies about Brunetti and Venice. This is no exception.
Typical Donna Leon at her best.
Donna Leon never fails to deliver, I have read all her Inspector Brunetti series set in Venice. Simply the best!
I could keep on reading, but, alas, the book ended. Now to get another and return to Italy.
This book gave me insights on a part of the world I otherwise will not get to know. The mystery was solved and the characters were interesting.
Leon is an extraordinary writer. Her characters are believable.the plots are well tailored. She is becoming a favorite author for me. I feel a reader of mysteries that wants to be treated to a good read filled with perception of Italian culture and characters that can take you there should try her books.
You’ll love the characters and interaction of characters especially in the police department. You learn lots about Venice and life there. This series of books is great
The political situation heats up as the Mafia’s shadow stretches across Italy, and the Brunettis’ marriage undergoes challenges of politics and love.
All of Donna Leon’s books in this series are great reads. Her characters are multi-dimensional and real.
One on her best. So glad I bought it.
One of Donna Leon’s best, and that is saying a lot, as I have read most of them.
Love the characters in this book. It gave a lovely picture of Venetian life, Italian culture, and a good mystery. I love the way the main character and his family interacted. I did not figure out the mystery until towards the very end, so it was fun to read.
