After years prosecuting murderers, assistant district attorney Jessica Black doesn’t think there’s anything that can truly disturb her. She’s wrong. When a distraught teenage girl shows up out of nowhere, demanding to talk, Jessie thinks the girl looks familiar but can’t quite place her. She claims her father was murdered and the police are letting the killer get away with it. Jessie feels for … with it. Jessie feels for the girl, but investigating murders is the role of the police department. Jessie is an assistant DA.
Then she realizes why Carrie looks familiar, and what homicide she’s talking about.
Reluctantly drawn into a politically explosive case the police and the DA’s office don’t want her to touch, Jessie finds herself face-to-face with terrifying questions of law and morality in an upside-down world where the line between victim and killer is dangerously blurred. But like Carrie, she won’t stop searching for the truth, even if it means risking her career, her values, and her life.

Good suspense/lawyer read
Loved it!
Good story, but a slow start. Keep reading–it’s worth it.
Fatal Defense (Jessie Black Legal Thriller) by Larry A Winters is an absorbing courtroom drama. Characters are complex, the plot lines believable and interesting, and the action supporting the case is exciting. This was a thoroughly satisfying read.
….A good twist on the usual lawyer/battered wife relationship. Enjoy the read!
A teenage girl shows up at Jessie’s office trying to convince Jessie that her father has been murdered. Jessie decides to do some investigating into the allegations. What she learns is Councilman Corbin Keely who has an abusive background is the murder suspect. But as information is developed Jessie feels that Brooke Raines, who killed Corbin Keely, did so intentionally. Jessie is conflicted about the case but ultimately decides to proceed. Meanwhile, Mark Leary has been rethinking an old case from 3 years ago. As he does some investigating on his own, he sees some similarities between his old case and Jessie’s new case. What Jessie and Mark discover is a conspiracy beyond imagination. This book has everything—murder, conspiracy, courtroom drama and more. This book intrigued me from page one. I could not stop reading. This has been one of my favorite Jessie Black stories. Can’t say enough how much I liked it.
Loved # 4! You can’t go wrong with this mystery series!
Fatal Defense, by Larry A. Winters, is a compelling read. The book flowed and built, so smoothly, and Jessie Black, Assistant D.A. character was up to her usual expert self in a court of law. Detective Leary also dove into action, and was such wonderful support to Jessie. What a guy and he does his job like no other investigator can. I loved the strong and well built characters in the Jessie Black Series. Loved the storyline/plot, (NO SPOILERS). I felt I was sitting in the courtroom with Jessie, hanging on every word, and felt like I was out investigating with Leary and feeling every punch of the painful attacks on him. Very well built characters that sweeps the reader up, and pulls the reader knee deep into the story and doesn’t let go ever. Author Larry A. Winters delivered again with Fatal Defense. Such a wonderful experience to read any book Author Larry A. Winters writes. Reader is always guaranteed good read.. I HIGHLY recommend Fatal Defense by accomplished Author Larry A. Winters. He sure knows how to write great books. ENJOY!!
When Jessie is at a college doing interviews or meetings with legal students. She has a visit from the daughter of city councilman to her and beg her to prove her dad was murdered. Jessie tells her she will look into to it. Doesn’t promise her that she will just she will look into it. The was she put her passion into this case and how she did her own investigation and went back to the officer on that case. Noticed the sloppy job he did. Just by talking to him she see how he gets his nickname. She reads the detectives reports and goes to the medical examiner gets his input and impression. She got all her facts and went to her boss for the approval and he was skeptical on it. She gathered all her information and ready to go to court she was ready. If you like criminal justice system movies read this book because it I one I think you with like.
Loved it! Looking forward to reading the next one.
Excellent story.
Good read!
Good read
I really enjoyed this book and intend to read more by this author.
Enjoyable read. Could have been better if it as more of a whodunit. The bad guys were disclosed too early for my taste.
One of the better ones I’ve read in a while.
Enjoyable.
Could have used a bit more character development.
I really enjoyed this book. Keep my interest and keep me wanting to read more from this author.
